One of my agents. How many agents do you have, Russo? Well, they work together.

The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Those ones usually are bad because then you tense up, you know, and everyone's always like, well, you know, if you're going to get in a car wreck, just relax. That's really easy to say if you've never been in a car wreck before.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
It might die. Just relax.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Yeah, just relax. It's fine. You're about to just hit this fence at 70 Gs. You're fine. Just relax. It's like, all right, you've never been a part of this before.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I have Star Wars tattooed on my body. That's probably a pretty extreme. They don't wash off for those of you who are wondering, uh, they're there for life. So you better be a fan of that thing for your whole life. So I got a couple, uh, Darth Vader tattoos. Um, so I, yeah, I grew up. Uh, my mom took me to go see Phantom Menace.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I think it came out in no one or 99, uh, when I was like six years old and I was hooked ever since then. So, uh, I got to go to the, The Last Jedi premiere, which I thought was good. I think what you want in a movie, but it was pretty neat being in that atmosphere of like, you know, a Star Wars film coming out and I get to be the first to see it. That's a very select few.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So, yeah, I have a huge obsession with the franchise and it's been a little up and down lately, but I have hope for the future. So we'll see.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Oh, my wife knows better. And I know better now, too, because my wife taught me. All the Star Wars stuff is pretty much taken down in my house. Before her and I got together, I had a shrine. And when she moved in, she was like, yeah, we're going to get rid of this. You have to put it somewhere else.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Any wedding is full of debauchery. I don't know what it is about weddings, but people just go nuts. It's like they're free passes. if they go to one or three weddings a year, like if they're free passages, get absolutely belligerently drunk and no one judges them. They're like, you know, it's like, Oh yeah, it's a wedding. You can go do whatever you want. It's fine.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
But, uh, yeah, we got married out in Aspen, uh, my wife and I and a beautiful place. And, uh, yeah, it was, it was a lot of fun. So we did it right. Which was, uh, which was cool weddings though. They go quick though. That was the only bad thing about the wedding is it was over before you knew it. And, um,
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
And then you wake up the next day, you're like, man, we planned this for a year and now it's over. So let's go home. So we had a good time.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I like it. Yeah. I got to meet Shanahan and, uh, in Sonoma a couple of years ago. Cool guy. And, uh, yeah.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Long hair, full beard is pretty strong when it gets to November and I don't shave or cut my hair. It's a good one. But hey, I appreciate that. I feel like it was I feel like it was skewed a little bit. Only because I was your guest, I was number one. But I'm great ahead of a lot of great athletes, great coaches. I appreciate that. That really got my morning started off.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I appreciate it, guys. Thanks for having me. I had a lot of fun.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Iceman. Good job. Man, you're 0 for 2. I'm actually Iceman, but it's fine. No, thanks for having me, fellas. I appreciate it. But yeah, I mean, it's loud, man. I mean, I've been doing this since I was nine years old. I grew up watching my dad race, so I've been around the track forever. And it does.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
The worst part of the life of what?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I mean, we do the best we can of like wearing in ears in the car, stuff like that to try to just muffle some of it. But it does digress a little bit. You see a lot of drivers that have retired, they are on hearing aids now, but it's just one of the drawbacks.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Yeah, it's always what I wanted to do just because I grew up around it and it was what I was most comfortable with, just watching my dad do it. I played other sports as a kid. You know, I, I love playing basketball. I love baseball. Um, but then I kind of had to come to a realization, like I'm probably not going to make it. I'm, I have my father's jeans.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I'm probably going to be five, nine and like 140 pounds. And, Racing is probably the best route for me. But my dad never forced me to do it. He was always, are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to go to the next step? So it was something that I just wanted to do what my dad did. I got lucky that I was able to get the opportunities and make a living off of doing this.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I'll be honest with you, like, not really. I don't really have to search for adrenaline too often. People ask all the time, like, oh, it's just is it just an adrenaline boost racing cars? And like, not really. Like, you're not white knuckling out there all the time. I think it's just what you're used to. But I try to find things that are more like relaxing to me, like going, you know, skiing and
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
you know, I play a lot of golf. Those are relaxing things to me where I can just kind of decompress and just like be out there and not really have to worry about too much. So I don't really search for adrenaline too often.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
The opposite, complete opposite. I am a very slow driver on the roads. I have nowhere to be quickly. I always tell people like, I get paid to drive really fast for my job. And the only thing I get, if I go fast on the roads is like a speeding ticket, a fine or go to jail. So it's like the trade-off is not worth it to me. My wife is actually the speed demon behind the wheel.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I kind of, if she's driving, we're getting to the place we need to go to quickly. And, uh, I try not to be a passenger, uh, you know, passenger driver, I guess. And, uh, I'd tell her what to do, but she's a speed demon on the roads. I, uh, I, I don't really get anything for that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I mean, everyone gets tickets, right? I mean, everyone does it. I haven't had one in a good amount of years. I'll tell you, my last one I had was I was a junior in high school. And my mother put a stop to that right away. The fear of mom got put in me after that speeding ticket because it wasn't a great one. It was a moment.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
And so after that one, I've been very, I just think of my mom when I'm driving like I can't. Give it up.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
No, I was going, I mean, it might not be impressive, but to me it was bad. I was going 80 in a 45. You crazy person. It was not. Yeah. Yeah, I'm crazy. I was a crazy guy. Yeah. You're a dangerous Iceman. I passed the cop. I came over this hill and passed him, and we locked eyes. And immediately I'm like, oh, no.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So I just I literally I just pulled over and stopped and I waited for him to turn around. So I was already stopped by the time he turned around and turned the lights on.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Sometimes I get a little annoyed with with that. drivers on the road like everybody like you know people merging kind of being foolish uh i'll tell you what bothers me the most is uh no turn signals that really annoys me especially if you're like stopping in the middle of the road to turn and you don't put your signal on i'm like what
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Yeah, I get down there today. I have noticed. It's funny, we travel across the country and each state has its own like work as far as people drive in and kind of what they do. You know, you got like the big cities like New York and stuff like that, where I don't know how people drive in New York in the city. Everyone's just honking at each other.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
But then you got Miami, like you said, where, you know, people just are all over the place. I would say no turn signal bothers me more. If you have your turn signal on, you probably have your music playing too loud and you forgot to turn your turn signal off. I've done that before. But if you're still going and your brake lights aren't on, like, all right, you're not turning anytime soon.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So I don't really worry about you.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
i tell you if that does happen i can't be upset about it you know that's a that's a hell of a way to go that's an amazing scientific thing right a meteor coming to get you that's like the odds have to be higher than getting struck by lightning on that one it's like all right well if it was meant to be it's meant to be um i guess for our year it's been like a super scrappy year so far uh like you said last couple weeks haven't really gone our way but
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
i've always related this sport just because i can relate to it the most is like a big wave like just you got you're going to be down a little bit and then you got to learn when you know you're riding the wave and you're and you're running really well you have to enjoy that stuff but like not let it bother you if you're sitting out in the ocean and no waves are coming at you or you're getting crushed by them it's just part of it and you just know that you're gonna you're gonna go race next week and uh you can try to do something different
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So we haven't really gotten too down about that. I think that gets better as you get older and just understanding that, you know, there's sometimes nothing you can do and you just got to keep going.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I think it's situational. I don't lose confidence. I've just never been that person. So I try to just not let doubt get to me. And I always just try to go back if things aren't going our way. Our whole team is really great at what they do. All 15 guys that we got in our camp are amazing. And I have all the faith in them. I feel like as a driver, if you make a mistake...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
you know, just you, you try, I try to learn from it right away. And I don't think you try to let doubt creep in your mind, like, Oh, I don't know if I can still do this. Like, that's not a good way to think. So if those creep, if those thoughts do kind of creep in, it's like, alright, Eddie, get him out of here right away. And just try to think positive.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
And, and if you do make a mistake, how do you learn from it, move on. That's like the best way that I've tried to learn over my years of doing this for so long.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
In moments, sometimes your mind will wander, you know, but those are rare, you know, in like certain spots like we're running around like Daytona or something and you're kind of just saving gas and not really a lot of stuff going on. You might think about other things a little bit, what you watched on TV, this new song you heard, but that doesn't go on for very long.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So it's very rare that that happens. I don't know. I can't speak for anybody else. Maybe I'm a little... get a little like ADD or something like that, that I have to like, sometimes I think about other stuff, but it doesn't happen very often. You're so just engrossed in this, you know, competition that you're doing that you can't really let it wander.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
So I would say like that's a 1% of the time that that'll happen.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
The only times I dream about racing is like fears. Like one of my biggest fears is sleeping in. and missing like the start of the race or missing practice. I've had a couple of those dreams where I wake up in the dream and like cars are on the track and like I've missed practice or the race. Like that's the biggest thing of me being late.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
But other than that, I don't really ever dream about racing. It's always weird stuff, you know, like normal dreams are. But those are the only racing dreams I have because I think it's just like a big fear of mine because I have slept in before and I've been late. That was way back in the day. But I think that's the only thing that ever creeps me in.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
Yeah, there's a lot of stuff outside the racetrack that you have to do and You know, it's, you know, being on a great plane with your partners, you know, and, you know, doing all the stuff off the track that I don't think people really realize, you know, a best of, you know, whether it's, I mean, a great example, like running through a weekend, you know, you'll get there on Thursdays or Fridays.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
usually have like a partner dinner on one of the nights. And then all race day, you probably have three to five like partner appearances, kind of meet and greets, whether it's with, you know, customers of that sponsor that you got, you know, people who work for that company. There's a lot of stuff you do right before you get in the car.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
And then even through the week, you know, I got to go to Raleigh next week to do a photo shoot for advanced auto parts, you know, so you're kind of constantly running around. That stuff's important. And I think I got a good look at that growing up, you know, watching my dad have to do all that stuff. So it wasn't just racing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
It's how do you also can connect to people that help you out, you know, and then kind of honestly put up the money to get you on the racetrack, right? That sponsors your race team. So all that stuff's really important. And I've been really lucky to have great relationships with all my partners over the years. It's neat because you get to meet awesome people that have the same interest as you.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
They're race fans and they love the sports. And then they can ask you questions about kind of the inner workings of it. So it works out. It's just part of the job. And we're pretty fortunate to be able to do that. So I never get to like, oh, I got to go do this for a partner. It's always exciting because you're happy to have them with you.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
The worst part? Wrecking. That sucks. That's a good answer. That sucks. Like, that's the worst thing ever. Some of them are, hey, I got a pretty good gig, man. Like, I'm really lucky to do what I do. It's a privilege to be able to drive cars for a living. And that's just part of it, right, is you're going to get in wrecks, and some of them are going to be worse than others.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
But that stuff sucks, whether you kind of get a little hurt or just know that you're done for the day. So that is by far the worst part of it. That's the only complaint I have about my sport is the wrecks don't feel very good.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
I'll tell you, the worst wrecks are the ones that you see coming. Like, okay, I'll give you an example. Probably the hardest wreck I've had in the last year was right at Daytona. You're riding around there in a big train and I got hooked in the right rear and you go right head on into the fence, right? Going 200 miles an hour.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
And that half a second, by the time you get turned, by the time you hit the fence, it feels like an eternity, you know, because you know there's nothing you can do about this. You're just waiting for a big hit. Those are the worst ones by far. Some of them, you know, happen a little bit quicker that you don't really expect it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: What'd You Say? (feat. Ryan Blaney)
But if you get to think about it before you actually hit, that's the worst part. But the safety side has gotten, you know, just in the last 20 years, I think it's gotten pretty amazing. I mean, there's still things that need to get better. But, yeah, the ones that take the longest, and I mean take the longest by like half a second, a second, you realize you're going to wreck.

Miles came back in that game. But also, my problem with Joel Embiid is not that he's just like this unfortunate dude that gets injuries. I think I can understand that concept. I'm a huge Chelsea fan. Rhys James, hammy's cooked. He's going to try to run out there. He's going to pull his hammy. That's just his body type. I resent Joel Embiid because of his style of play.

It's unfortunate that Diana had to go because this is a bad week for the Jets, and I still think the saddest story about all of this is we all know openly, Diana's reported on it, Bill Belichick has opened disdain for Woody Johnson, hates the New York Jets, right? People went after Woj a little bit. LeBron's camp would go after Woj through their different avenues. I don't think I've ever really seen anything like this as it pertains to Shams, who once reported before anyone that Donald Trump got COVID.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
But how does this end? Because there needs to be a victor here. If this ends with Jimmy Butler getting traded to one of the teams that Shams outlined before, then that's a whole lot of pomp and circumstance for you to end up being wrong in the end.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
But are we also to ignore what Jimmy did in the offseason? Hey, those purple and gold uniforms look good. We're just going to pretend everything is just kumbaya over here in Miami? This is part of the Jimmy Butler playbook. And this is how he kind of operates, especially when there are seeds or beyond seeds of him outgrowing a place, which has happened several times.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
A lot of people want a lot of things, though. They don't always get what they want, especially when the Miami Heat want a superstar to demand a trade. Look, I want Aaron Taylor Johnson's abs. I'm craving them. I don't even know who that is.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
I'm going to see it Christmas Day night.

Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
I'm coming out of a casket. Well, sarcophagus. Don't call it a casket because in Nosferatu we don't call it a casket.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
No, no, Nosferatu is not a Satan name. It's the name for the undead, the vampire.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
Have you seen Nosferatu? Because no one's really seen him. It's a ship. All you get is just the eyes.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
This is, you know who directed this film? Robert Eggers, the guy that did The Lighthouse. This is his fourth feature film. He did The Vitch. He did The Northman, The Vitch. And he did The Lighthouse, which is a Christmas movie. So this is the most marketing he's ever had behind it. I'm literally wearing a collaboration for a cologne. I'm so hyped for this. Christmas Day night, the cinema.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
It's haunting. Do you want to smell it? It smells like Count Orlok's cave. I can't smell it. It smells okay. Thank you. It does smell like a cave. It does smell like a cave, but a nice cave.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
inviting an inviting cape so basically this is just a remake of the 1922 silent film the seminal german silent film that was basically bram stoker's dracula but without using the names so it's a darker twist on this because the count is actually undead even though it's dracula doesn't go by dracula it goes by orlok and it's supposed to be Incredible. And this is a seminal movie event.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
Comes out Christmas Day night. And all the little goth kids and all the little emos and all the little vampy kids are going to be super excited because Eggers always delivers. All four of his films, over 90% on the Rotten Tomatoes meter, including this one.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

What? Nosferatu.

Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
You haven't seen the 1922 silent film? You're a cinephile. That should be required viewing for anybody.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
I did, and he did, and I watched it last week. And this one, they don't call him Nosferatu or Count Orlok. He's just Dracula, but he looks Nosferatu, like 1922. Now, everybody's got their original names. Lots of rats in that film.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 1: Shams Called Out Over Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors
Was that the last voyage of the Demeter? That one stunk. Regardless. In all the Dracula war. That was a 40.

I was very fortunate to have a pitching coach by the name of Tom House. And Tom and I are the same age. And Tom is a coach that's always on the cutting edge. And I really enjoyed our association together. and he would always come up with new training techniques.

Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
Oh, my God. I can't believe this. This is like literally gut. This hurts me more than not getting Durant. The idea that they're going to lose PJ. You've got to be kidding me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
It's so sad because there's the photo that I love when Andy Ellsberg... That's Andy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
Sure. No, the moment is Nikoli Jokic commits a crime on the court and he hits Marquise Morris in the back. And the whole team is being held back by Andy Ellsberg, of all people, menacingly looking like we're going to kick Jokic's ass. And I got the photo framed and then they played Jokic and they never did anything. So it's sort of a nothing moment now.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
You know he's the one that did it, right? Well, I don't know because there's five people that make decisions, but I'm at the point now where I've had enough of Riley. I'm good. I'm good on Pat Riley. Thank you for everything you've done. Please, please leave. I've had enough.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom

Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
I have a Jimmy Butler jersey that I tried to put here and I was going to put tape over it, but I don't have any of the tape. So instead, I just have been using it to blow my nose. But listen, I've had enough of Pat Riley. Please.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
allegedly i like davion mitchell he has been referred to in the past as one of those guys that is sort of a heat culture player who's not on the heat yet i understand the interest getting rid of pj tucker is offensive to me like that's like the thing that you can't do that's ridiculous
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Hour 2: David Samson's Rules For Using The Bathroom
You're a Ben Simmons fan and you're going to sit there and talk trash. You would be grateful to have a heat culture player. You had a heat culture player in your midst and you didn't know what to do with him because your organization is a bumbling bunch of fools.

What the hell was that intro? You're a professional podcaster and journalist. I'm embarrassed by that last 20 seconds. I don't know what you're doing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Oh, my God. So I just want to... Where are you? First of all, don't worry about where I am. I'm in Japan. Nice staircase. Beautiful background. David Sampson was right. The text I sent you was alarming. It was not meant for air. I sent it to you at a time where I did not know we had P.J. Tucker. That's what happened. And then I found out we got P.J. Tucker and everything's okay.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Like, today's a good day. I don't like how you guys are talking about this trade. Not only did we get P.J. Tucker... We got a lockdown defender. Do you want me to read you some stats? It's PJ Tucker. You just told us. Well, no, no, no. Not just PJ Tucker. I'm going to read you some stats. These are players' shooting numbers when guarded by Andrew Wiggins. Luka Doncic, 5 for 16.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Anthony Edwards, 7 for 21. SGA, 5 for 12. Donovan Mitchell, 5 for 12. Cade Cunningham, Tony's favorite, 0 for 6. LeBron James, 3 for 9.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
How is anyone going to score at the end of a game when it's Hero, Wiggins, Jovic, Bam, and Khalil Ware? How are you going to score a point?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
It's a good point. We're going to have to score on our own. But defensively, it's in the making.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
It's been a wild swing of emotions. I have, in the past 24 hours, tweeted about Pat Riley needing a new job. I have blocked Jimmy Butler. On Instagram. And I do think Pat Riley's at fault here. I think he should have either paid Jimmy or traded him a year ago, bringing him into this year with no new contract, no new teammates that are any good. Not a good idea.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
But now that we're here, I mean, Andrew Wiggins, go ahead to me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Where it got so heightened was I was texting people, would you trade Hero for Durant? Would you trade Bam for Durant? That's how bad I wanted Kevin Durant. I was willing to trade Bam out of bio for him. So, yeah, the... Pablo was asking, where were you when you heard the news? To me, that was an interesting question.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
I was watching The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City reunion part three, and I got the news about Jimmy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
I had to turn off the show because what I was trying to do is read text while watching the great reunion. I couldn't do it, so I had to turn it off. But that's what I was doing.

That's not how you pronounce that. Guava pastelito.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Amin said something interesting to me too, where he was saying Jimmy and Bernie are masters at making a mess of this. Great point. I think in retrospect, if Dame Lillard had done this playbook in Milwaukee, not only did the heat get him, but then domino effect, Jimmy no longer wants to leave. And then you've got Dame and Jimmy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
At the time this was happening with Dame, I was saying you need to make a mess. Dan was saying the same thing. It has to be Miami or nothing and you make a mess of it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
No, I mean, look, at this moment, he's a trader, and I don't want to retire his number, but the zoomed-out view is obviously it's an enormous success. Zach Lowe wrote two months before the Jimmy Butler trade that the Heat had the bleakest future of any team in the NBA, and he wasn't wrong. I mean, it was insane that they got Jimmy and got to finals.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
I mean, when they got Jimmy, as Dan has pointed out, that was supposed to be move number one, and then you get two or three guys. So the idea that just Jimmy... It was an enormous success. And I hope one day they do retire his number. But for now, he's dead to me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
I'm not fooling anyone. I mean, look, I would have preferred to have Kevin Durant. I think if we get Kevin Durant, you get me with sunglasses today, you get a different version. It's hard to put on the sunglasses when it's Andrew Wiggins. But lockdown defender. And what I'm really excited about is P.J. Tucker. I can't lie. I like P.J.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Tucker more than LeBron James when it comes to what they meant to the Heat. That's a legitimate take that I have.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Polishing David's World Series Trophy (feat. Ryan Cortes)
Well, if you count the one that I count, which is they were up in the first nine minutes of game one against the Lakers in that finals, and then bam, and Goran got hurt, I count that as a ring. So technically they have one to answer your question.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
That was a great video. It was a great video. It was informative. It wasn't the point I was trying to make, because the one I was trying to make when he said, LeBron came here, and I said, but it's not LeBron's way, it's Pat Riley's way. It's not Dwayne Wade's way, it's Pat Riley's way. It's their organization. You're just going to have to accept that at some point.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
They're going to do it how they want to do it. And so for Jimmy Butler... Who I see a lot of people. I do have a question. I see everyone has been repeating this. They let Jimmy Butler do way more than they let LeBron and Wade and Zoe and Shaq do. I've heard that repeat that exact same way, same phrasing, multiple places, multiple people. But everyone dances around it.

But Dan, there's a couple of things, right? Number one. By the way, Udonis was two years ago. That wasn't last year. But number one is the part about this. The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
The part where they said Jimmy Butler and Pat Riley have not spoken, have not texted, have not met face-to-face, had not, excuse me, from at least the end of the season, which was in April, to the January 2nd meeting where they were like, you're not giving us enough. That is staggering. I remember speaking to Ramona Shelburne. Years ago, I was on the jump.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
Ramona Shelburne broke a story at the top of the show that Magic Johnson, president of the Lakers, had not spoken to Luke Walton, head coach of the Lakers, for two weeks. And I was like, what? How is that possible? And I said, man, Luke, better get your resume ready. When that happens, this is a massive fracture. That was two weeks.

Now Chris Haynes is telling me six months these guys haven't communicated?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
That's not what happened. What happened is you guys thought, or the organization thought, yeah, the reason he broke up with all those other people is the stuff that we love. Right? We love that he's demanding. We love that he goes out there and gives it his all. We love those things about him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
It must not have been a challenge. That he's not afraid of confrontation, which, Dan, in today's league, more than ever, having people who are not confrontation-averse is such a game-changer. Because everyone's passive-aggressive and in their feelings. I love that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
It is. I mean, it's like I've had players tell me, I mean, you couldn't work in the league anymore. I said, why not? It's like, because you can't talk to the kids the way you used to talk to people. What do you mean?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
It's like, no, if you say something, the kid will go sulk for two weeks and be in his feelings about it rather than, like, take the challenge or even just tell you to go after yourself or whatever, right? And so Jimmy Butler is a throwback in that way. He is a throwback to a time when guys just – like we're just assholes to each other and everyone just dealt with it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
When I hear the Ramona Shelburne story about people like, oh no, he's coming back. It's like, that's what I'm talking about. Because... In another era, those guys would have picked up the phone and told him, yo, go after yourself. You're not in this locker room anymore.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
If you felt like that for real, like, hey, you turned your back on us and we're going to move on without you, the players would speak in that way.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
We're not having the fun conversation. The fun conversation here is who's the person who said we don't want him back? I have a theory.

He benefits the most.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
Oh, so he makes it a mess. And then when Jimmy walks in, he's like, guys, guys, I'm Kevin Love. I know how to, I heard it. I'm going to bring everybody together. I'm going to inform. And then we're looking boom, boom down. And everyone's like, oh yeah, yeah, we should look boom, boom down. Hey, yo, that's crazy, fam.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
But that's Jimmy, right? That's also Jimmy. Like, oh, you think this is going to hurt me? Nope, I'm going to serve coffee and have fun. But what was in the video?

Listening on the radio as an 11-year-old? Snow, that's why they called him Snow. Look, marketing in the 90s was incredibly direct. They weren't trying to be subtle or anything. He's from Canada, he's white.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
I just want to be clear to both of you, right? Hawk, you're here age-wise. Dan, you're here. I'm sort of in the middle, bridging the two generations together. Hawk, you grew up in Pennsylvania? Yeah, Pennsylvania. You, right here in South Florida. I was in Sudan, and I knew snow was white. I was in a country where power being on for consecutive days for 24 hours was like, oh my God, what happened?

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
Look at him. First of all, look at him. It's not like a regular white guy in rap where you see him. No, it is infuriating cultural appropriation. No, it's not. Informer. That's not a good. He wasn't. No. Informer. No, we can't play it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
So the irony of all that is way back when, when the Cavs added Richard Jefferson via trade and I think Channing Frye, those guys arrived to a Cavs team that they felt was fractured, cliquish, all too serious. And the first thing those two guys did was they said, everybody's getting on this text, this group text. And they would just send memes and they lighten the mood.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: The "Palpable Dread" Around Jimmy Butler
And that's how that team got close. And so to see Kevin Love take that lesson from earlier, this is why you have vets, because they go through things earlier and then they know how to play it forward in the future.

I'm sorry, let me ask this question. I know you guys don't like that when I do that, but do we have the sound of Dwyane Wade on his podcast talking about it? If we can cue that up, because it's a real interesting window into exactly what you're talking about, Dan. The thing that is interesting to me is everyone, like Mike said, palpable dread, right?

The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
Watch where we finish this year. Watch where we finish this year. This guy is special. He's special. He knows how to get it done. He's a great communicator, great teacher. He's fun to be around. He makes everybody better, including the coaches. And, you know, we'll see. You know, I'm looking forward for the, what do you call it, spring ball or whatever. I can't wait.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
And we're going to go against the best? Oh, good. Bring it on. Let's see. I can't wait to see that little Juco kid from Hutch. Bam! We're going to get after his little butt. But anyway, it'll be great. We're excited. And I saw the Maiava guy. I coached his uncle. I hated that kid when I first sat him. A USC kid, a little captain. Remember, he could walk under this table right here. Little guy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
And we draft this little runt. I'm like, oh, man, this guy, I was all over this kid during the OTAs. I'm like, man, this guy, man, you got to run to cover a guy. Anyway, so then I'm like, hey, guys, Sweet Life has us going on vacation with the family going out to Hawaii, going to Maui. I've never been to Maui. I run things in Oahu, but I'm like, I'm going to go to Maui. He's like...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
Hey, Rob, you get in any kind of trouble now, you just tell them you know Kaluks. I'm like, yeah, I'm going to tell them I know Kaluks. Get the hell out of here. Walk out there to the usual. Got me and the wife there. Oh, we're going to have a romantic evening. Go out there, no rent-a-car. What do you mean? You never called for the rent-a-car? I told you she's Greek.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
I'm like, yeah, they must have lost it. So, of course, I forgot to call. Now they're out of cars. I'm in Maui. I got no car. So what do I do? I know Kaluks. I got a car. Oh, you know Kaluks? Swear to God, hand to God, true story. I got a van. I'm like, yeah, Kaluks, my man. Anyway, I ended up loving the kid. He was, oh man, is he mean as a rattlesnake.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
The Big Suey: Don't Look Now (feat. O'Shea Jackson Jr.)
And there was a reason why that kid was captain with all those first round draft choices. I love that guy. Ended up, looks can be deceiving.

Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So we start flying up to Bristol having conversations with these people, and you were right to highlight that they actually had radio bona fides. Amanda Gifford came up through Colin Coward's show. Liam was the executive producer of Mike and Mike for a long time. John Keller was a radio lifer. So inside of the ESPN audio division, we were starting to see people that we could F with.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
really like they got us they got what we did and it was a little bit different than maybe some previous managers that we had had when we weren't a part of an actual part of clearance over there it becomes clear that colin's leaving i was actually in bristol the day that it was reported colin was leaving to fox i was sitting in colin's studio and i got to see his entire process at the time we just gripped it and ripped it dan got in in front of that microphone

Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7

Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I was in his studio because I was working.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Well, there was a couple of interesting things that happened on that day because I believe Colin got into a controversy about Dominican baseball players that day. I believe Jen Latta was supposed to be a part of Colin's show, who is now with College Game Day, and she was just kind of sitting in an office as all this stuff was breaking.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And it looked like Jen, who Colin specifically asked for, was now not going to be a part of Colin's show. So it was an interesting time to be there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
But also what I realized is they're used to a totally different workflow from the host that is hosting this time slot. Colin, when I sat in with him, Colin would run through his entire show twice before it actually started. What? And he would just bounce stuff off of guys, whereas we would just turn on microphones and go.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And it was a little bit different because by then the zig had been established so we know how to zag. And that's another part of this challenge that we got. But the talks to get to midday were... We were pushing you pretty hard. We wanted this. What ultimately made you align with us and say, all right, let's go for it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
A lot of things professionally are happening at this same time. We're not thrilled with how Fusion's going. In the last episode, we got into how that disrupted our workflow. We're still out on that set when this decision gets made. Lincoln Financial, who I'm an employee of at this time, is about to sell to Intercom.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I see this Disney thing happen because it's part of us who may be moving to middays. All my boys get to be full time. Our team gets to be paid by Disney. And man... Locally, especially, the radio market is a changing and we wanted that long-term stability. What ends up happening is we become Entercom employees because that's a company that Lincoln Financial sells to. Which is now Odyssey.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We become Entercom employees for five business days before we become... And we can't have a lapse in our coverage. So we had to go through the entire onboarding process. There was no way. I'm like, this is so annoying. We had to do all the HR training, all of that. And then five days later, we become Disney employees. So we're about to change from...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
the fusion thing's not working out those guys tried hard and i think we established in the last episode it wasn't so much them as it was us we had a different vision for that stuff you start talking to eric ride home to take over the production of the simulcast begging him really begging him give me something i will give you no responsibilities you don't have to do anything just give me something put it on television in some way and so he got us a single employee lorenzo well charlie is still with

at this time initially.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Charlie wasn't around with us for very long because with that move to Ride Home and ESPNU, Charlie, ever the climber, took this opportunity to move to the studio that the show was getting produced out of, which was Washington, D.C. And once you get Charlie around those executives in D.C. around Ride Home, you know that his career is going to go a certain way.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So Lorenzo comes aboard and even though the support system that we had was way slimmer when we moved to ESPNU and we went under Ride Home's umbrella your comfort level really increased because you knew that he was at least across it and could give recommendations and it gave you a peace of mind that you just simply didn't have with the Fusion TV.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
If I may, let's put pause on that because we didn't just go straight to mid days. We had one bit of training with a prize piece of radio real estate that gave us all the kind of data that would put a little suspicion into us because Mike and Mike go on vacation. They ask us to replace Mike and Mike and we're working with a totally different team. This is a production that is based out of Bristol.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We're in our fusion studios. And for me, it was a nightmare. filling in for Mike and Mike. And there was one big technical mishap that happened on this show. We, at this time, were so reliant on off-mic communication. I would constantly be in Dan's headphones because of the physical disconnect to the main production studio that was in another room. So we were... heavy in each other's headphones.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
They set the mics because it made it easier to produce for them in Bristol to on all the time. So I was catching word from our diehard audience on social media, hey, we can hear what you're saying. And that was never communicated to me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We'll get into all those particulars in this episode that'll cover probably the second most important decision because the decision to leave ESPN when that time came was probably the biggest for our lives. But professionally, second biggest decision the show ever made. And it wasn't going to ESPN in the first place because we had carved out a nice little lane there in afternoons.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And while we didn't say anything that got us in trouble, I wanted people to be alert over at ESPN that, hey, you're messing with our livelihoods here when you can't communicate with that. And at the time, I'm an intercom employee. I'm about to be an ESPN employee. This is my one last opportunity to say something and not really have repercussions to me professionally.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Probably took it too far, but this was the biggest argument that I had with Amanda Gifford over at ESPN, where I really turned it on extra. Again, me being angry, me not having the life experience, me not taking HR with ESPN. I'm raising my voice to my superior here because you cannot mess with my guys' future like that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And it needs to be stressed, but I do know that it was part calculated in that I only had one of these cards and I'm not going to burn it up when I'm an ESPN employee. Let me do this one. I have the safety of Enercom. But what do you remember about your experience there and all the additional attention that came with taking over for Mike and Mike for just a day?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I remember I sternly spoke to the producers that were producing from afar in Bristol. I'm like, we can't be on the air. and you not relay to us that our microphones are always hot. I can't be finding out about this two hours into this show. And I got a complaint from Amanda saying, hey, the producers didn't appreciate you criticizing them in front of everybody. I'm like, I have no direct comms.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
This is the only way that I'm alerted to that they can actually hear me. We've been to Bristol like once. We have no idea the setup that's up there. I'm like, what is this culture over there? We could have lost everything. And you're talking to me about hurt feelings from dudes in a production truck when we need to be the priority.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And that was the real battle that I was having with managers over at ESPN. Like if we move, it's going to be a different management style from you too, because we're more of a renegade outfit. And that's why I seized on that opportunity. So I remember I had an interesting conversation with Dan during this time because I had saved up for about two years for a trip to Hawaii.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And this was another one of those things, which is we had a target start date in mind and then the target start date just randomly moved up a week. And so if you see footage from the very first show that we do in the mid days, I'm in a Hawaiian shirt. I have a lei and I have like sunblock on my nose because I literally go straight from the airport to the studio.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
No one was really paying attention to us. We had already made that decision. The decision to go to mid-days really changed everything for us in a variety of ways. I guess professionally, there were a lot of benefits too. Our reach was about to increase dramatically. Our visibility, our cultural impact, the money that we made, all this was a bit of a game changer for us.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I remember Dan kind of holding it against me, like, why didn't you cancel this trip? Because Dan and his brother were in the studio and putting up new art, really making the show look livelier and sprucing things up. Fair question by Dan. Yeah, and he was like, why didn't you? I'm like, well, Dan, I presently make $36,000 a year I save for this.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It's not really one of those things like, oh, I'll get to Hawaii the next day.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
bit of a disconnect there, but we survived it. But this general era, Dan has less confidence in the stuff that we're making. He's got additional attention because at this point it's inverted. I was by the end of our run at ESPN, the guy going into all the rooms. If someone had an issue with Dan, unless it was a top line issue, they'd go to me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Not when we first started in mid days because they didn't know me from Adam. I don't have these relationships and I don't have the trust built up with Dan yet where he's sending me on his behalf. So Dan, you're hearing all of this. You're talking to more suits than you ever wanted to in this era. You're not feeling good about the show. You have a breakup.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
The on-air relationship with Sue Gotts is a little icy. You're not physically engaged with the shipping container over there. You're doing this on this new set that looks cool. We pop. We're on ESPNU now. We have good channel placement. Our dreams are coming true. You're not entirely happy with your relationship with work, the content that you're making, and the bosses that are riding you.

The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
You had to fight for Ron McGill even more because when we move time slots, they're like, hey, you play douche or no douche. You can't do douche or no douche here in this time slot. A lot of things from how we did the show. And you asked a very good question about the newsy aspects of the show. How did that change your process?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
to replace Colin Coward, and we'll get into all those spicy details here in this episode, was we go to this great prize piece of real estate in radio, and all of a sudden, overnight, a lot of suits that left us alone, that probably left the office early before we even turned on our microphones in the afternoon, all of a sudden had to justify their jobs and their responsibilities and pay attention to a show that didn't really care much for the ESPN brand.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
But quickly, I just want to talk to you real quick as if Dan's not here. This was a time in the show where you knew that if you did something that sidetracked the show, got us off of a good vibe, you'd feel it. You could cut the tension with a knife during breaks.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
clearly not happy part of us pushing for this growth allowed for dan to blame somebody else for that added pressure and we felt that and we knew that that was a cause to do in business for our decision to push so hard yeah we knew that occasionally during a break when dan is frustrated why'd you guys make me do this it was something that we heard occasionally it would cut like a knife but we knew that that was going to be coming our way with it i said it out loud huh often
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Often articulated. I don't think Sue Gatz and I have ever directly communicated. Correct. as much as we did during that area because we genuinely loved you. And I think both of us knew that there was more going on there. It was clear to us that a lot of things were happening in your life. This was a time of change and your relationship with work was changing and you were always a vibes guy.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
If what you were doing wasn't feeling good to you and understandably so, because at this point you're doing it for 10 years. Why is the thing that I've always felt good for 10 years and all of a sudden not feeling good, even though when this is a time that I should be enjoying the rewards. Right. So we were racking our brains over how do we fix this?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And also sometimes vent to one another because we knew that we had a lot of displaced rage. No question. We probably individually and collectively occasionally dropped the ball and had reasons for you to come down on us professionally.

But what was happening was a series of things that we didn't have control over that would often just manifest with you saying, can't believe you guys made me do this.

Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And we were out of answers. Like nothing was really working. And naturally, and I understand like this isn't truly fair. I'm just doing this for the audience. Dan's already lived through this because we've tried to pick up the pieces after that and figure out what happened there. And we've since addressed it. But during this time, naturally Dan's stressed. I'm a huge ball of stress.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And a stressed Dan is really bad for the show. It's hugely bad for the show. We're all trying to find answers, and sometimes it's just vibes. But me, early manager, unconventional climb. I'm taking this out on my shipping container. I am passing on my stress to others. I'm growing frustrated. There's all sorts of communication issues.

seeds of resentment that i end up reaping a little bit later on when we probably creatively turn the corner this is when i am probably at my worst with my anger this is when my communication isn't good this is when i'm most surly i'm just genuinely frustrated and it's not until i find the solution which we'll get into now that it kind of turns that corner

I remember you actually being strong. Our very first afternoon episode for ESPN Radio, you were a star that day. Dan was nervous and we were thanking you for weeks on end about how good you were at the beginning. You were probably at the peak of your powers in terms of hosting and being able to roll with these punches.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
You were kind of a guiding light in being able to tune out that noise and keep doing it. You were a punching bag when you needed to be and We probably don't navigate it without your general approach to it here. Your on-air character is interesting, but it's so tied into Dan's approach that it really all settles in on Dan. And part of being the 10 a.m.

Doesn't Skipper, when we move time slots, recommend that Bomani kind of replace Duvall? Recommend? He said it right to my face. Yeah. Oh, that's right. In his office. We took a meeting with Skipper just as this all happened.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Oh, so many great Drogba jerseys in his office. And it was cool being in the office of the president. It wasn't so great when Skipper was like, hey, and who are you?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I'm sure Stugat, it hurt your ego to hear that. But on the opposite side of the coin, uncommon to have a host that says, no Stugats, no show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And he was going through a really difficult time at work, understanding that, look, I had plenty of bad days when we were on in the afternoon, plenty of stressful days. And it was really compounded by the time I got home and it's 10 o'clock and I don't have anything to take my mind off of. I had stressful days.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So let's get into how that opportunity presented itself initially. But we have to address that around this time, it's kind of an ambiguous timeline. Chris Cody was an intern and then made full-time, I think briefly, by Lincoln Financial, which was about to sell to Entercom.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And let me tell you, a stressful day hits different when you don't have to go through drive time traffic and you have the rest of your afternoon and evening to kind of get over it. So it was tough. I was appreciative that Dan made the move. I wasn't so appreciative that we were kind of being blamed for making this move, but it's a process and we have to figure something out.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Because there is not going to be a show anymore if we don't get the show better, if we don't get Dan in a proper headspace to create. We're out on this main stage and Dan keeps making the observations because we're doing local hours before we go live for ESPN radio. And he says things like, why does local feel so much better than national? It's what we're used to.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I'm like, is it the local stories? What is it? And this was an issue that was facing us for close to a year. We were out on that main set in middays for a good chunk of time, but it felt like forever. And ultimately, thank God she listened to me. I go to Amanda. I'm like, Dan keeps saying local hour feels better. And we keep trying to find the reasons why.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
But I think ultimately, it might just be the room because he's not disconnected from the shipping container. It's a totally different workflow for him. We did the local hour in the radio studio. In the radio studio. And then we'd go out to the main set because it looked better and that set was wired and we wanted to look polished.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I want to once again highlight it wasn't the subject matter. It was the room. It ended up being the room and our aversion to returning to that room because it seems obvious. Just do it from there. Well, this is a very big time move for our show. And at least on that main set, we looked the part.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And to the listener, they didn't really know that the show in our mind was dipping because we didn't feel good creating it. Why would we move into this broom closet as we're ascending? Why would we go into this cramped space? They spent all this money. We have such a cool futuristic looking set. Why would we go into a broom closet as we get bigger? That doesn't make sense.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
But ultimately we got past that and that had to be what changed things. We got bigger. The room got smaller. We did. So I talked to Amanda Gifford and I'm like, look, I can't get representative sample here without us being off of television for a while because I didn't know if it was a studio thing or if it was a TV thing. I just knew that I didn't have the sufficient data to make the call.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Chris Cody goes from Nepo Baby intern to Nepo Baby employee and joins our team formally because I remember Chris in the Clevelander as we were building stuff out being a big part of that process.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So let me just get two weeks in that studio, man. I'm begging you. No TV, no nothing. I need to get Dan in a place where he feels good leaving that studio. Back to the roots. Where we have good
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

shows because if we string together a couple good shows we can turn this thing around and it was in that two-week span and god bless amanda for allowing it and our partners and ride home allowed it dspnu had to find some other programming to fill in those two weeks but it worked almost immediately it did and it felt good and it got dan in the right headspace this was around the time that we had the relationship counselor kind of shine a light on because we weren't going to say that i gotta be honest i was pissed because i enjoyed the big room and the big lights and i wanted the big lights and
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And it made us happier because we got our guy being happy again. What was it about that transformation that it finally clicked and we could finally turn that ugly corner?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Speaking literally from on high. You remember when he first started having guests there? He'd like, we'd have Chris Mullen in the studio and Chris Mullen's neck would be, he would be looking straight up at Colin as Colin gave, Takes from on high. We knew that we had a different aesthetic. I love the way that the show looked on the main set. That little island actually looked cool.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We could play with that big screen. If we had Brian Windhorst on, we could have a goofy photo of Brian Windhorst.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Because the shipping container was a bigger part of the show. And Dan would do the show off of their faces. And it's a lot different when you're doing it on the main set and you're playing to just a camera guy who's watching you do work you're insecure about.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We ceased being a radio show that was trying to be on TV to a radio show that TV was going to have to work around. And that decision really helped turn the corner for us. We start feeling good about what we're doing. And it really serves as a launchpad for what I would say would be commonly referred to as the golden era for this show. It saw the most growth. It saw the most creativity.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
This is when our show was really funny, especially sticking out compared to the rest of the network.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We were able to parody ESPN while being on ESPN. We were able to be anti-establishment while working for the worldwide leader in sports in a coveted time slot. We got to be this renegade outfit that was still, if you get down to brass tacks, the establishment. You're doing 10 to 1 on ESPN radio. You're not this little scrappy underdog, but we always maintained that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
We were always kind of anarchist. We were punk rockers, even though we had one of the biggest gigs in the nation. And this really, for me and Dan too, interpersonally, and for you and I, because we look back on that time as very challenging and we kind of survived it. Made us closer. It did. But also with Dan, me being able to get Dan back on track.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
With that decision, in collaboration with people at ESPN that allowed for it, it changed my relationship with Dan, which was still contentious. There was still some resentment because I was one of these people that was pushing for a decision that ultimately led to a lot of unhappiness for him.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Being able to fix that problem and get Dan feeling good with his relationship with the content that he was making, with his work, with his workspace, putting a smile on Dan's face, letting Dan see the smile on others' face, this is where I became Dan's guy. This is where I truly think I got most of Dan's trust because I overcame some hard stuff.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I still struggled as a manager, but I was going into the breach and fighting people on his behalf to get this done. I got buy-in from ESPN. I really stuck my neck out there for him. It was never said in this moment, but I really do think that this was a tipping point for you and I, in which you became a big Mike guy because I was able to find the solution here.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
A switch flipping.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I think getting you to be happy again and have fun and laugh with your friends. You were yearning for that at this point for an extended period of time. It was about a year and a half where you're unhappy, felt longer.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Even as Skipper's like saying no to Bomani.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It felt like a big achievement when it happened, but certainly with the benefit of hindsight, I know that that's where I became Dan's guide. Now, in that year and a half that we were struggling, I write a lot of bad checks and seeds of resentment will get fortified because of how I handled that stress. I wasn't good. At this point, I had interned the therapy. I didn't know how to carry myself.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Like I felt like if I felt And if I was being let down, I only had so many off ramps before I would just get angry. And I found out the pitfalls of being angry. And at this point, I started clashing a little bit with Allison. And I'm not really clashing with a container so much as being frustrated with telling them what to do and they're not doing it. And I'm holding them accountable.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Yeah, they're also in a different room. Right. So like, I'll feel it. I'm sitting in that and I'm just not great at being able to deal with that. And even though our show is about to turn a corner creatively, grow and really do some important good stuff that changes the game.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I, unbeknownst to me, open the door for more resentment that quite honestly, I'm still dealing with and trying to dig myself out of to this day. But I don't want to set up the next episode on such a bummer because when I think about what's ahead of the show on the timeline, 2016, 2017, those were such great years for our show. It felt like we were doing some really cool, big things.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It felt like we were the rock stars, the bad boys of podcasting. Podcasting all of a sudden becomes a legitimate industry. And it felt like all the moves, all the bets that we put, on ourselves, carrying over the RSS feed, moving to middays. Now that we're feeling better about the work that we're doing, these bets are starting to pay off and you kind of feel like top dog a little bit.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So it led to a really good time, Dan.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Growing up early in the industry, I saw creative sparks fly. Tension usually breed good segments afterwards. I grew up in a very angry household, not to get too much into that stuff, but I had never had to be checked on how I carried myself. We highlighted a scenario at 790 where I got in a yelling match with Todd Castleberry and I survived it. I ended up winning that political battle there.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
So I see a lot of bad behavior fortifying here. And shortly before I tell Dan straight up, I'm scared of you is because now I have to talk this thing out. Because by that point, Dan straight up told me, you yell at me one more time. This is how you lose your job.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It's not going to be because of whether or not you get along with Allison, whether or not we're good, whether or not ESPN is happy with us. Just respect me. Respect me. Stop yelling at me. Just because you saw Hawk do it a couple of times, we're not there yet. And you are angry, kid. You need to think.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Quite the opposite. There was a time there where I just didn't have many moves other than anger because I was clearly frustrated. Look, we told you ultimately what ended up being our salvation was moving into that other studio. It was quite literally the answer to all our problems. How did we deduce that?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
By being super frustrated and angry and blaming other things that weren't the actual issue and trying to work through that, totally being frustrated with, this is not the issue, this is getting blamed for it, how do I fix this?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Yeah, it's a miserable place to be at for a year and a half, but it would have been a hell of a lot more miserable if I was still hourly and getting home at 10 o'clock in the evening. In the evening, I arrived to the place where so many people in my industry wanted to be. And I wasn't super happy with it. And I felt like I was crumbling under the pressure. Thank God we turned that corner.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I was made better for it, not just as a manager, but as a person. I just didn't know it then. It was real challenging, but Dan fixed it. To a large part. I don't really talk about my anger issue as it's something that I conquered. Dan occasionally says that you got over it. And I talk about it like it's recovery from an addiction and you're never fully recovered.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It's constant because there are constantly times, not constantly, I've gotten better. I've been generally more patient. But there are times where I feel it bubble up and I have to really try to avoid from ever getting my life back into a place. I was so ready to be off the cuff angry.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
Hmm. Talking about like the anger stuff, like specifically going away?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I'm confronted by everything. I wasn't fully aware of what Dan was to me as like the center of all my stress and my relationship with work not being super healthy. I ended up being that for a lot of people because I was the go-between and Dan wouldn't chastise them or criticize them or hold them accountable.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And I was always that person for other people, not just in the radio studio, but for TV people, for ESPN managers. I was always a very convenient fall guy, not without blame. In many respects, I was that person. That was just cost of doing business.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I don't think people really understood the level of stress that I was under, my unique position, how it was so tied to Dan's healthy relationship with work. And ultimately, I'm not going to change a damn thing. I wish I knew about the anger sooner. And I certainly wish that the way that I found out about how much I had hurt people during this time was presented at me in a different way.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
And we'll get to that in a future episode. But I did what I had to do to get us across that line. I know Dan has said time and time again in the last episode and this episode, the show was never going to be over. Dan had the relationship with Skipper that if he said, I can't do this anymore, he had a successful show with Dan LeBretard is highly questionable and then highly questionable.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
He was going to be fine. He would have found his way. You and I live with this all the time. I wasn't going to be. And I knew I had to get this show over the line by almost any means necessary. And we did. We figured it out.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It did. It made me better, certainly in the long run. I am better today because of finding that solution. I am better today because Dan, whether he knows it or not, found a lot of trust in me. I look back on that time, that battle, that decision to move back into that womb because we invite Mike Schur into it a little bit later on. And he says, you guys are just in a baby's womb right now.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
I look back on being able to get this show right as my biggest achievement because I genuinely don't know if there's a show today if we didn't figure that out. It was such a crucial move and it was so high stakes. It wasn't like the afternoons. We had people managing us at
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
this point and a whole economy revolved around us figuring that issue out and we did and then dan i mentioned that this is when you were at your strongest i think once dan got back into that studio this is where for my money dan and stugatz are the premier pairing in sports audio There are people that you seek out their opinions. They're giving you funny day in, day out consistently.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
The timing is great. Other characters are finding the roles. The show is ultra creative. We're doing parody songs. We're doing bits. We're doing trailers. We're doing visual stuff. We're starting to have clips break out on social media. This is where the show really breaks out and it doesn't do any of that stuff if there's no show and we had to get the show continuing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
It's a little bit sports here and there. But when Dan says, keep them away from me, keep that away from me, you're probably listening to this right now and saying, well, it seems like all the issues that you're having are just in a personal and your literal work environment. What kind of noise does Mike need to keep away from you?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
In the next episode, Donald Trump gets elected and Colin Kaepernick becomes the topic du jour for a solid year. It got noisy. And it gets real noisy and suits start creeping over. And that's when we started being told, stick to sports. I was fine with that. It's the holidays. People are shopping for great gifts.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
One of the great gifts that I always like depending on is something experiential, like going to a sporting event. There's nothing like it, especially when the stakes are ratcheted up high, especially when it's a game that everybody wants to go to. Well, sometimes those games are sold out and you have no other option than to go to the secondary market. Well, go to the industry leader. That's right.

It's one thing to say, yeah, we'll give him an internship, see if he wants to try it out. The motivations to move to middays were pretty obvious, but for those that don't know, Dan had a very different relationship with time. Dan was a single man, didn't have kids, and had just moved into a studio that was blocks away from his home.

I could really maximize my digital audience. So for me, life balance, money, career opportunity, the fact that you have this Cadillac of a real estate space in radio, I thought we could do a lot with it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 7
But that life balance was a huge part of it, not just for that moment, but seeing where I wanted to take my life beyond that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Your favorite memory of Greg Cody on the air? I want to ask both of you. I'll go first to give you guys some time, and you may have the very same answer, but part of the cheat code with Greg Cody was the hard network out because it was a struggle getting him approved by ESPN. We were always going to win that battle. It never actually escalated to Hilda Dion status, but we had to convince them.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And it's hard to convince ESPN radio folks that, hey, this guy is going to continue to walk into the hard network out and be cut off. It's going to sound super unprofessional, but- People don't realize.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
It's a secret sauce aspect.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But it helped get Greg over. And I'm like, look, from a radio perspective, you got people hanging on every word, knowing that this thing is going to happen at the very end. And 90% of the time, it's always going to deliver. So the hard network out really locked Greg Cody in with us as a co-host from there on out.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Best directing we've ever done from a video perspective.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Do you have a favorite moment?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Is Greg getting his own episode? Well, we've got to get to the others.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I know, but it was going to be a 10-minute thing. And now I already feel like I can already feel Pablo complaining why he's only got eight minutes by comparison.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I think you're trying to get out early and I'm not going to let you have that. We move on to Stan Van Gundy. Now, Stan Van Gundy, we didn't really know beyond your own personal relationship with him. Sugatsu and I, all we knew was this is a former head coach of the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. When Hawk left, Stan Van Gundy was in between head coaching jobs and he brought us instant credibility.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Now, I've highlighted in a previous episode the extent of what a challenge it was to get him actually just on the air and for that to feel seamless. But why did you want Stan on this show? The timing worked out. I know you gave him your own equipment. We all kind of knew that Stan was going to be in demand so that this was kind of like a
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Because you wouldn't take them. 790 didn't have a budget for a former. We didn't have a budget for anything.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
That's great producing, dude. It's really good.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
So, guys, I know why you liked having Stan Van Gundy around. Oh, the guest.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And you know how much Dan loves talking to head coaches.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Oh. Because Stan was there. Oh, delightful.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He laughed. And it found a way to make head coach interviews appealing for Dan. It's kind of funny that Dan wanted a former head coach on As It Goes. When you consider all the baggage that he had associated with the head coach interview.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
We can work with really smart or really dumb. It's either between. There's no in between.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Before we move on, what is your favorite memory of Sam Van Gundy on the air with us? I will go first and buy you guys some time. We did a segment called Sam Van Gundy Basketball Street Walker, which I don't think he was totally comfortable with. In which I made him a prostitute on the street that you would solicit for basketball opinions.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
This was a hot new twist on Stan's hot nuggets, and I was afraid to even run that idea by him. And I was shocked that he afforded me the one time he decided to do it, which I'm eternally grateful. And I kind of caught the hint to never do it again. But the fact that I got Stan Van Gundy to take part in Stan Van Gundy Basketball Streetwalker, I'm eternally grateful.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Oh, another great segment that we did with Stan was ASMR with Stan Van Gundy. where he would just be chewing Pringles and candy and running his thumb across. We made it very sensual.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Stan, I'm going to need you to reach to the bag of Pringles. Pop it open and chew them into the microphone.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Okay, just chew the Pringles into the microphone. He needs to have silent time. Okay. Stan, go ahead and grab a peanut M&M and make sure to chew it loudly into the microphone.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Go ahead and grab a handful of Big League Chew and start chewing it loudly into the microphone.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Last but not least, go ahead and grab that toothbrush and just put the bristles under your thumb and rub it across a few times while you answer a basketball question. Yeah, he was great. All right, let's move on to Bomani Jones. Now, this was a dude that you had to learn how to work with on the air. You didn't have the pre-existing relationship. Well, Mike, we all did, though, right?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
In terms of being a guest contributor and just bombing in and giving you things that you'd never even considered, Bomani's as good at that as anybody I've ever encountered. Dan, you were the driving force behind Bomani Jones. I think this was a name that appeared on your radar via Jason Whitlock.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I remember it being challenging in that we're not the type of show that Bomani would do. We have an entire career now of Bomani, and he does very good work. And his brand doesn't necessarily line up with our brand. It was tricky.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And the co-host era of our show that began at 790 with those three names, Greg Cody, Sam Van Gundy, and Bomani Jones, that's how I knew I was starting to get good at this production stuff because I started getting up for these challenges. It was challenging.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
they were all uniquely different yes bomani was the guy that had the most experience because he was doing radio locally but also most of his early appearances were also bombing in from a radio studio in raleigh and we're all getting to know each other and we don't actually get to interface which was difficult but interpersonally it would be challenging because the timing would be a little bit off managing bomani's feelings managing dan's feelings making sure that you were okay with hey
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Every other day, I'm clearly the second voice. I'm taking a back seat. How am I okay with this? How does my character change, Stu Gatz, with somebody else being the second voice? And it allowed for us to be really efficient with our funny because we'd ride on the fly. I appreciated that challenge, but Monty really tested me in ways that I hadn't been tested by another voice.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And I was really appreciative of it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And you represent the most ridiculous aspects of our show because at this point, we realize, hey, by comparison, Sugats is only going to get dumber as a character. Yes, thank you, Mike.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And sometimes he would say some absurd shit in the middle of a profound Bomani thought. And he'd co-sign on it and give you buy-in right away. And it allowed us in one segment to be the smartest show and the dumbest show all at the same time.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And that's where the show really had some really charming moments. Yes. And it was always a great off-ramp to the serious stuff because we do the societal stuff more because Dan was craving that and he didn't always have those voices. I don't think we've ever had a voice that was as capable of it as Bomani.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And how did you take your radio experience and decide shortly thereafter, I'm going to partner up with this guy, even though I don't have to. The show's name is Dan Lebitard is Highly Questionable. This is so helpful on my radio side that I need it on the television side.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
My favorite memory of Bomani on the air was when he would let that sense of humor out, and it made it all the more funny when he'd let his guard down, buy in on some of the ridiculous stuff, introduce us to DJ Mike Hitman, and invite us into his world. The Stevie Ain't Blind stuff was so great from Bomani Jones. Stevie Wonder. ain't blind. Yeah, the CD ain't blind stuff is great. Is it?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I think so. Just saying his name, Stevie. I just omitted his last name.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Because he's not blind.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Bomani Jones, as dynamic a talent as we've ever been around on the show, eternally grateful for his contributions. Briefly, let's touch on John Amici because he wasn't a regular guest co-host. This was more sporadic in part because he was across the pond. It was very difficult from a production standpoint, getting him connected. Sometimes he's vacationing and like in the woods. Great Britain.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
It was tough to get him aboard, but he provided a lot of eloquence, a lot of humor, too, because he was very playful. He was a big nerd, too. And it allowed us to do what does the God say with John Amici, Sugat's mispronunciations. And that was a really great benchmark for our show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
It's a compliment. We still go to him occasionally when we just say we need a smart person on this topic. He's probably among the smartest we know. No, definitely among the smartest we know. Sarah Spain was a good example. Oh, she terrifies me.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Was a good example of what this show, during that golden era of the show, having some influence and power in that we would see people around the network that weren't getting utilized, that I thought were super talented, that weren't being properly utilized under the ESPN on And Sarah Spain immediately, she was a contributor when I was watching Numbers Never Lie. I thought she was so smart.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I very clearly wanted to also have a woman because I've gone through a lot of names right now, no women. And I wanted to make sure that women's sports was starting to rise to prominence. And we had some blind spots and we were talking about all these things that was happening in sports where women were victims and we were just guys weighing in. And it was a huge blind spot for our show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
So I saw Sarah Spain and I thought she was super sharp. And then I was really stunned to learn, oh, she's an update anchor on ESPN Radio Chicago. I'm like, what? I want to get her in for an entire show. Let's fly her down. So Amanda Gifford allowed me to fly Sarah Spain down. And immediately I was stunned by how she was the alpha in the room. This was also a challenge because we had no idea.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Even Bomani, he would still kind of defer to this is Dan's show. And he would defer to the dynamic. Sarah shows up. Sarah is going to be the alpha in that room. She was pounding me. First episode. She was a bully. I think she would say in retrospect, she was probably too hard on everybody. But you have to understand her climb. Look, she was super talented. Sarah Spain was a massive talent.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And she was, this is sexist in my opinion, doing an update anchor role at ESPN Chicago when she was capable of so much.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
She came in with a bit of a callous already because the entire medium had been cruel to her.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
She knows she's damn good. Yes, she is. And she's had to fight up until that point for all of her opportunities that I think it almost caught her by surprise. Like, no, no, no. We're here to lift you up. We're not against you. You don't have to be tough with us. We're here to get the most out of you and put you in the best possible light. I think she then picked up on that.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And then we got to really see her really soar within our show because she felt comfortable enough to do things like create a freestyle rap. And she really shined. She let her guard down.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And it was all born out of, as you probably learned if you've listened to the previous episode, this was all Dan. Dan really was a driving force behind getting guest co-hosts. And that concept in on our show is kind of born from Hawk Levin. And Hawk was the third voice on our show. When he left, I wasn't quite there yet. Dan didn't trust me to be that third voice.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
She let her guard down and she was such a huge deal for this show because there were challenges. We've never had a woman on our show before. She's the commish.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And we're starting to realize that our show is starting to be a bit of a launch pad with Bomani and with Sarah. Once Sarah starts routinely getting featured on our show, she kind of ceases being an update anchor in Chicago and starts getting her own jobs as a host of a show. She gets more appearances on Around the Horn and her career starts to ascend. We certainly got in at the right time. Yeah.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But he knew the value in it. And we identified Greg Cody, Stan Van Gundy, Dan's friend Barry. We were trying...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But we see that, hey, there's a connection here. There's more opportunities being presented because we're giving a platform for these people to shine. So I was very proud of that. Amin El-Hassan fits in that mold. Amin El-Hassan came on my radar through talking to George Sedano, who was an occasional contributor. He said that Amin would be so great on your show. This guy is really funny.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He's underutilized at ESPN, which he was at the time, just basically doing Numbers Never Live and SportsCenter and ESPN newspaper. And Sedano gave enough of a cosign that I wanted to get him in and try him out. And I remember the first day on the show, you thought he worked at the Clevelander.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Yeah, we needed the nutritional value because, look, we're a bunch of goofs and the audience is hot on our tails knowing that we actually don't know shit about sports. Shit. So we need all the credibility that we can get. And exchange as a barter will also give you plenty of avenues to be ridiculous. And another example of a career starts to ascend.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
People start seeing him on our show and he starts doing more Sports Nation stuff. He starts being put on TV in more of a lighthearted light and he got out of it what he wanted to. Incredibly loyal to us. Fucked with us from day one. Was a huge fan of our show and didn't need the show explicitly.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
explained to him when he walked in the door, which was a bit of a change of pace from all the previous co-hosts. Even Sarah, we had to kind of explain, even though she was a little bit more familiar. Amin was a fan. He was a chronic. He would listen to us daily. So it was actually, whoa, hugely refreshing. I don't have to explain any of the jokes. The guy has pretty good timing.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He knows when to lay out. He knows when Stugatz is cooking on something. And that was really welcome and made me want to get more of it.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
No one more ride or die with us in that co-host table than Amin. And that's not a slight on anybody else. Everybody else had other things going on. Greg Cody had no choice but to be ride or die with us.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
The loyalty doesn't have to end in my death. How about I'm right and I'll give you guys six years to figure it out. We welcome that, too. But Amin, I'm sure, really surprised you, and I'm sure you found it hugely flattering when you felt pretty vulnerable.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
When we were leaving ESPN and you decided to build this company with John Skipper, Amin was one of the first people you heard from saying, I'm with you no matter what?
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Yeah. He was great. I'm so blown away by his... He's not dead. I'm so blown away by his loyalty to us. And he's still a key contributor on our show. And he's carved out quite the interesting character for himself as well. Love Amin Alhassan.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And I can't really fully articulate well enough how much that meant in a pretty vulnerable time for us, for him to leave everything behind and be like, I'm with you guys no matter what. Pablo, he was more like, I'm right or wait a couple of years.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I'm right or let me wait a couple of years and see if this works.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He knew that it would be difficult. He knew that it would be very different. He knew that he wouldn't have the same platform and he knew that he wanted to be with us. So immense love for Mina Elhassan. I'll take your direction there. Let's talk about Mina Kimes. Mina Kimes was someone that we both had identified.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Dan, I think you deserve a little bit more credit than you afford yourself here on Mina because I had reviewed the tape and my ultimate takeaway was I I really want to get Mina in here. I really do. I fear that she's like too green for this and maybe she needs a few more months, some more exposure on our show. Maybe we have a few more guest hits.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And I was in West Palm Beach and we spoke like early Sunday morning. And you're like, you sure about Mina? Because I think we can make that work. I'm like, well, I mean, there's a reason why you're circling back on me. Because I kind of felt like we decided let's table that for a little bit. And you circled back on it and made me think about all the things in different prism.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And I guess you caught me at the right time. I was like, you know what? F it. We'd had pretty good luck getting to know people on the air. Let's ride. Let's see how this goes. And my concerns were valid, incredibly green. But I wasn't that hip to how much of that would be an asset to us, how charming that would be, how endearing that would be to an audience.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And then when she sat in here, like, look, I knew Mina Kimes was smart. I had been a fan, but I had no idea how smart and how easily she could make her intelligence accessible to the listener. She was smart without making people feel stupid. And that's a very special quality because I'd line her intelligence up against anybody, including John Amici's on our show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But out of everybody, Pablo include Pablo is very bad at this because he makes people feel dumb. I'm bad at it. Yeah. Dan's bad at it. Terrible. No one's been better in media than Mina at this one specific.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
On the 17th time, no less. Mina bought in from day one. Mina loved the sandbox, wanted to have more fun. She wasn't eager in ways that you would probably put a negative connotation on. She wasn't ever really about advancing her career. Never came off that way. Her career advanced naturally because she was just so good. She kept growing and growing. She got better with every appearance.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
She was still always going to be green, but she also was definitely aware that that could be an asset to her because it helped her relate to the audience.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Keep in mind, she wasn't like the absolute Navy SEAL, as Dan would describe it, when it came to football.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Just yet. She was learning how to do that stuff. And we made really good use of her. And her laugh was infectious. She wanted to participate in things like Roy's Realm. She was down to dress up. She was down for anything. She was down to be the punchline. I love Mina Kimes. She wanted a zip line.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Well, at first it was because she sounded awful. Like, it was terrible. We need this to work on the radio. So we had to rig something and I believe Mina's calling us right now with the phone just taped to her bra. Okay, is that...
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
I'm her biggest fan. And I am so grateful for that phone call that Dan gave. gave me that one Sunday morning that gave me a pause and made me reevaluate because we brought her in really early in her career and watching her career now where she's on ESPN football coverage, Monday Night Football, now a part of Netflix. She jumped with us once we started a network.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Mina Kimes' football podcast was a linchpin of the Levitard and Friends network that we built over at ESPN. I'm so eternally grateful for her friendship. As decent a person as I've ever met, as caring and loving and authentic as a person as I've ever met, I'm the biggest Mina Kimes guy there is.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
No doubt. If anything, like, look, we got additional eyes on her and people realize right away she had all the talent in the world. I am happy and proud of our association with her, especially because conveniently, like we were tied to her early in her career, but she earned everything that she got.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Look, she also really ascended at a time where being affiliated with us wasn't beneficial to her career. Even since then, getting her still to appear on our show, these became negotiations. These became battles. And Mina would pound the table for us. And in many respects, comes full circle. She's given us more now than we gave her back then.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Yeah, I love Mina Kimes. And I'm so grateful that even though we've tried to nuke it at every turn unknowingly, that she's still allowed to appear on our show. And she's only going to grow from here, too. She's going to be one of the biggest stars. She's already one of the biggest stars in the industry.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Briefly, I want to touch on Marty Smith, who was a co-host for a brief moment in time, and Izzy Gutierrez, who still slides into the studio with us. Marty was another guy that I saw who wanted to do more at ESPN, wasn't doing enough, wanted to be around fun things. His joy was infectious, eminently likable, one of the most liked members around our show.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Also came around our show around 2017, when Miami was actually relevant as an outlier in the 21st century, and he was down here all
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And you can't mention Marty without his production partner, Jonathan Wiley, who would often hit me up. Hey, we're going to be in Beijing with Cristiano Ronaldo. Can we do something? I'm like, I have no idea, but I'm going to try like hell. And I will put you in touch with someone that knows what you're talking about.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But dude, these guys were starved for people to just say yes. Yes. Because they were way more ambitious and creative than I could have been. You want to talk about a production talent super tandem? Wiley and Marty Smith have this crazy chemistry and They just like feed off of each other's ambition. Great guys. One last note on Marty.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He was the first person that really let it resonate with me that, oh, we're doing really good, fun work that everybody wants to be a part of. Because here's this guy that I think is, by comparison, a wild man for ESPN. And he sees our show as an opportunity. And that was hugely flattering. Izzy Gutierrez is a guy whose loyalty and friendship I've really come to value.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
He's been with us on the air in some form or fashion for several years, but not that consistent. But I think what Izzy has given to us as a gift is his love, his loyalty.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And his ability to support pretty much any road we go down. And I really value his honest feedback, too. I go to him for feedback probably more than anybody else, whether he knows it or not, because I really, truly value his opinion. Because he's been with us for so long, and he's seen all the twists and turns we've taken.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
Yeah, he's a five-tool player, and that's kind of how we use him. But I think what he probably doesn't realize is we use him for the vibes of feedback. He's just as genuine a person as they come. I think it's in Pablo Torre's contract now that we have to talk about him last. So we'll get to Dominique Foxworth beforehand. Oh, really? Dominique Foxworth, I think he was put on my radar.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And I'd known him to be a fan of the show. I certainly knew him from his playing days. He was always on Twitter. He would leave comments and... He was very clearly a fan. Occasionally he sent me a message saying what a big fan he was of ours. But I think Mina was like, you guys have to talk to Dominique. He loves your guys' show so much. And I was eager for that opportunity.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
And he fit like a glove pretty much day one.

We're going to get into it when I do an oral history on the oral history because I've had to say it a couple of times. Yes. But let's begin with like the first foray into a coast, the most natural one. We had Greg Cody as a day one guest and he was a weekly feature on our show. Pretty natural that we'd try him out. What was your motivation in getting Greg around?

But you can imagine, like, when you consider his shtick, and our legacy listeners, the people listening to this, know what his shtick is, and it's a great default. Usually, if we wanted... Okay, I got nothing to talk about. Let me just talk about LeBron James and the Miami Heat because that's easy.

I know they're your defaults actually became when we brought in all these voices, their idiosyncrasies, and no one was more idiosyncratic than Greg Cody. So it had a lot of great, wonderful qualities to it. But if you just dropped Greg Cody in a like a one time sample, which we were doing early on. you'd say, what the hell is this? This guy's bad.

There is a problem. Well, no one's wearing cargo shorts, but I believe the modern-day nanotechnology shorts can, in fact, make the evolution to cargo shorts because everyone looks at these and says, there's no way I can make a cargo short out of this material. It's so lightweight. Everything that goes in the pockets would be just so baggy and look so weird.

Your friendship with Greg was sweet. It gave our show a bit more charm, and our show could certainly still do for more of that. From a producer's perspective, initially, I really struggled trying to see the fit in having Greg outside of the obvious, which was Dan's general comfort level, which was always my North Star when it came to these things.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Oral History of the Dan Le Batard Show: Episode 9
But it took a while for me to figure out, this is going to sound terrible, truly the extent of how bad Greg Cody was. To the point that like that eventually became my default. Oh no, it works because he's bad. Let me just accentuate. Let me somehow turn this huge weakness into a strength. And I think even for Dan on the air hosting, that took a while too.

For an entire show, like how do we make you being bad the joke? That comes over time. So I remember like the first like 13 appearances being a real struggle. We even took a couple of weeks off because I didn't necessarily think it was a fit. Dana and I had some discussion as to whether or not we'd continue it.

It was a struggle from a production standpoint, too, because he started with us. Keep in mind, Greg's been with us in every incarnation of the show. Greg's been there either as a guest or as a co-host. He's been in every studio that we've ever created content. And that's key because the first studio that we were creating content out of when we were trying to get Greg as a regular co-host.

You remember the studio set up? I was looking at you directly in your eyes. Yeah, it was weird. I had a profile of Sugat's and I was looking at the back of Greg's head. Yes. This dude doesn't know where he is in terms of clocks and stage direction. This is a young Greg Cody. When I'm looking straight at him. So imagine how oblivious Greg Cody is when he's just locked in on you.

He's got no respect for the clock. No idea what we're doing. No idea what voices are in his head. He can't even see where they're coming from.

Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
My name is Tom Ryan. I am a, I guess I would refer to myself now as a serial entrepreneur. Did a lot of really cool project work for some of the biggest food companies, restaurant companies in the world.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
If you wanted to make a pizza more valuable, there were two ways to do it. Put more cheese on it or charge less for it. And charging less for it's not a good business model. But we never really thought about the architecture. And so, Stuffed Crust Pizza was a novel idea. Nobody had ever done it before. That was a real innovation for the marketplace.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
And so the simple notion was to put cheese, which is the value driver of pizza, the most iconic part of pizza value into the least valued part of the pizza, which is the crust.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
Yes. Yes. I'll never forget, I was sitting in the room, first focus group, everybody's enjoying it, everybody's thinking it's really cool. Some guy, one of the panelists looked into the mirror, he knew we were back there, and just looked right into the mirror and said, my dog's gonna hate you.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
And the reason for that, back in the day, you know, people refer to that part of the pizza as the pizza bones. They eat the good stuff, you know, the sauce and the toppings, and then maybe some of the crust. And this is for everybody's pizza. And then they would toss the crust to their dog. And all of a sudden, we took that away from people because we had put so much value into the crust.
The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz
Pizzagate: We Investigate the (Real) Government Plot to Stuff You with Cheese
And so it took us a year and a half to get it right, to get it integrated, to get it to work at store level, to get the marketing done, to get the positioning done, to get it tested. We started probably a year and a half to almost two years before April 1st of 1994, which was our launch date. And launched it on April 1st, never looked back. It was huge for us.

Yeah, I was told that happened. No, I said that the NFL caught up to what Sirianni was doing offensively. And for the first couple of weeks, it was looking all right. But then that but then that bye week came and they totally changed their identity. And yeah, I'll eat it. Kelly Moore and Sirianni, they figured something out. No doubt. They're completely different.
