Chapter 1: What makes the cold open of SmartLess special?

6.32 - 27.245 Will Arnett

So, listen, this is, I know, Sean's favorite part of the show, the cold open. Super fun, yeah. Chat and chew. Chat and chew. Well, but no, no, no. That is his really favorite part of the show is what follows here. After the fun music, he gets to do his coffee chat. But right now, he sort of welcomes the listener in. Right, yeah.

27.405 - 29.386 Sean Hayes

How you doing? How's everybody going?

0

29.426 - 32.087 Will Arnett

He gets a sense of everything. Everything asks everybody how they're doing.

0

32.127 - 50.303 Sean Hayes

And then like a little funny quip, like what's the bit going to be? You know what I mean? Yeah, or I could do a dad joke, you know, or whatever. You could do a dad joke. I could do something like I asked. Or you could do that. Yeah. Or you could just say to our audience, you could just say, hi. Hi. Welcome to SmartLess. Welcome to SmartLess. SmartLess.

67.406 - 86.554 Jason Bateman

I have to say something. Okay. This year, you guys, both of two of my best friends in the whole world, you, both of you, are doing some of the best work I've ever seen you do. I'm hanging out with Will on the set of his movie, and I've seen some footage, and Will, the work is truly, truly incredible.

86.574 - 87.314 Will Arnett

This is what I'm hearing, Will.

Chapter 2: How does Paul Rudd feel about his friends' current projects?

87.354 - 107.527 Jason Bateman

Truly incredible. Mind-blowing. I've never seen it. People are going to be blown away. Not surprised. And Jay, when I sat down and watched Black Rabbit, I've already spoken about it. This year is so exciting. I'm so excited for people to see both of you in these two incredible pieces, and I know you cringe when I say this, pieces of art, because I do believe that they're two pieces of art.

0

107.547 - 111.229 Sean Hayes

Well, thank you coming from the reigning Tony Award winning artist. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0

111.249 - 112.85 Jason Bateman

Well, that's not why I said it.

0

113.111 - 126.101 Sean Hayes

No, but you set the tone for us. You kind of led out and, you know, wow. What a performer. Really spicy from the Tabasco theater. And now... That was unexpected.

0

127.683 - 134.789 Will Arnett

Nobody thought. Watch him go back. That's as he's getting yanked out.

136.731 - 138.533 Unknown Guest

Nobody... Let me finish.

139.344 - 143.947 Will Arnett

I have a good, wait, I have a good- When do we start recording this episode, you guys? I got a hard out.

143.967 - 147.51 Sean Hayes

I know. Wait, listen, wait. Sean, your guest is going crazy right now.

147.53 - 155.215 Jason Bateman

Do you want me, I know I'm going to get there, but do you want me to ask you guys a thoughtful question that we can riff on, or I have a joke, or we can just get to the guest?

Chapter 3: What is the story behind Paul's candy store?

262.183 - 264.766 Sean Hayes

Yeah. He's just doing a slight reveal.

0

264.926 - 275.875 Will Arnett

This is long overdue. Wait, how did you know he was from Kansas City? Let me tell you something. Guys. Because there's only a few. There's Claire McCaskill. There's Rob Riggle. There's Jason Sudeikis. Claire McCaskill. I didn't know that.

0

276.456 - 277.196 Paul Rudd

How do you know that?

0

277.316 - 279.999 Sean Hayes

Paul, do you get mistaken for Claire McCaskill a lot?

0

281.22 - 293.935 Paul Rudd

I get a lot of her emails. Okay. And it... It's usually when they talk about the three from KC. The big three. It's Sudeikis, me, and McCaskill.

294.256 - 298.339 Sean Hayes

How has it taken this long for Sean? I feel like this is Sean's fault.

298.359 - 303.864 Will Arnett

Couldn't make your deal any earlier than now. And now finally you've given us a manageable price.

303.884 - 305.185 Sean Hayes

Aline Kashishian was rough.

307.146 - 309.468 Will Arnett

Yeah. She banged us up on that.

Chapter 4: How did Paul Rudd's upbringing shape his career?

390.416 - 397.745 Paul Rudd

Anyway, we went in, and another guy named Andy Ostroy, we went in and bought the candy store, and now we run it.

0

397.785 - 405.013 Will Arnett

Now, Rhinebeck is, you can't walk there from the city, right? That's a trip. You can. It'll take you a while. Yeah.

0

405.173 - 405.393 Sean Hayes

Yeah.

0

405.834 - 411.479 Will Arnett

You'd need a lot of candy to fuel it. Yeah. It's like a two-hour drive? It's about a two-hour drive.

0

411.519 - 416.28 Paul Rudd

Yeah, about an hour, depending on if you're leaving from the Upper West Side, it's about an hour and 45.

416.34 - 423.122 Jason Bateman

Well, I'll get a head start. Jenny Slate also owns a small store like upstate New York.

423.182 - 423.942 Sean Hayes

Massachusetts.

424.662 - 426.803 Jason Bateman

Oh, never mind. Moving on. A general storage.

426.983 - 439.066 Sean Hayes

She has a general storage. Are we going to start going down, Sean? You want to start listing people who also own businesses? Just come on down the 85 and let us know. Paul's got a candy store in Rhinebeck, okay, started by Ira.

Chapter 5: What was Paul's experience as a DJ in high school?

617.083 - 625.826 Will Arnett

So you end up surviving six, but was not in seven. No. They didn't ask me about seven.

0

626.326 - 637.211 Paul Rudd

They did like a cast change like Fargo or... I think they kind of went... I want to say in seven, it might have been Josh Hartnett. They did a White Lotus swap. That might have been H2O. Oh, H2O.

0

637.551 - 638.551 Sean Hayes

I remember that one.

0

638.611 - 640.392 Paul Rudd

I think it came back strong in seven.

0

640.692 - 652.962 Sean Hayes

If I had been a reviewer of Seven and that you weren't in it, my headline for my review would have been all trick and no treat. Oh, jeez. You know? Oh, man. Yeah.

653.002 - 657.545 Will Arnett

You know, Paul, you're in a pretty special episode of Smart List so far. We're only 31 minutes in.

657.786 - 658.506 Paul Rudd

That's really sweet.

658.526 - 659.627 Will Arnett

And we're not even to the first question yet.

659.647 - 670.213 Paul Rudd

Yeah, 29 of which my microphone went down. I know. I did want to know. Can I just say also... How fun it is just to listen to you guys.

Chapter 6: How did Paul Rudd's family background influence his life?

937.058 - 946.144 Paul Rudd

Well, there were different categories. There was dramatic interpretation, humorous interpretation, prose and poetry, improvised duet acting.

0

950.206 - 956.205

And we will be right back. And now back to the show.

0

958.546 - 965.287 Paul Rudd

So Paul, I heard you were a DJ for a while, right? Well, I mean, barely. You know, I did.

0

965.347 - 967.648 Jason Bateman

I thought it was like a long, I thought it was a years long thing.

0

967.668 - 976.69 Paul Rudd

I really did DJ. But when you say to people that, you know, oh, I used to DJ, that sounds like it was kind of a cool thing. But the way I DJed was not cool in any way.

Chapter 7: What was the significance of Paul's bar mitzvah in Canada?

976.71 - 979.371 Will Arnett

It was like weddings and bar mitzvahs and stuff. Yeah, bar mitzvahs.

0

979.631 - 986.514 Paul Rudd

And by the way, eventually it was that. The first time I DJed, was I was in high school.

0

986.534 - 987.375 Will Arnett

It's just an ice cream truck.

0

987.715 - 1019.143 Paul Rudd

And I went... Nobody, they're like, we don't even have equipment in this thing. I was trying to get a job as a waiter. I was in high school. And I went to different restaurants and I had really long hair. And I didn't want to cut my hair because... Because you're a G. I was a cheese ball. And I'm like, I got to keep this. You're crushing it.

0

1019.463 - 1038.707 Paul Rudd

And so I was getting rejected at every waiting application I'd fill out. There's no way. I couldn't get a job. And I went to this bar called Studebakers, which was like a 50s bar in Kansas City. Had to be 23 to get in. They didn't want any of the younger crowd.

1039.028 - 1044.092 Will Arnett

Wow. Sure. Yeah. They didn't even want new drinkers. You had to have at least two years under your belt.

1044.152 - 1048.876 Paul Rudd

They want some certified 23-year-olds who, like, who's going to go to a 50s bar anyway?

1049.877 - 1054.7 Sean Hayes

Right. You had to be born in the 50s to get here. To even want to go to this place.

1055.621 - 1076.311 Paul Rudd

That's funny. And so I... Went to try and get a job and they said, we're not hiring. And I saw that they had a DJ booth. And I said, do you need a DJ? Because I also DJ, which is not true. I didn't. But they said, actually, we do. But here's the thing.
