42: Earlswood’s mass cycle ride and Reigate’s Pub In the Park plans… and more
This week for the Planet Reigate podcast at the Children's Trust Bell Street Reigate, we have a marine navigation compass. We're asking just £50 for this item, but obviously I need to tell you a bit more about it. I've seen them retailing brand new with their boxes and a little dust cover bag for between £85 and £100. I think they started off at £150 when it was a brand new model.

Anyway, it's a coarse compass and it can be used to take bearings. Obviously very important if you're out on open water. It's saying it's ideal for a small boat, a dinghy, kayak, canoe or even a small fishing boat. So very versatile. It's saying that it even works upside down when mounted on the ceiling.

Hopefully that doesn't mean you're in really rocky seas and you get to benefit from it whilst trying to wrestle with the waves. It can be moved around the boat and it's got a clip with it which is a smooth edged bracket that can be fitted in a permanent position if you choose.

with two little holes which will take self-tapping screws and it's designed with a smooth finish to the bracket and the item the compass so that it doesn't catch on sails or hurt fingers probably really important if you're out there you might be out at sea on your own for example it's got a soft rubber casing and that helps to provide efficient shock protection as well

So there's a conical cord that reads direct in horizontal readings and gimballed magnetic set. In other words, if it rocks from side to side, it centres itself again. It's quite an interesting item, even if you don't have any interest in compasses or the sea. It's quite a talking point, I would suggest, on the sideboard at home. It is available on Saturday morning for just £50.

41: The Light’s first birthday, a look back at Reigate’s Summer Festival and Horley carnival… and more.
This week's item was first manufactured between 1962 and 1968 and it's from the Mattel Incorporated Company. The brand name on this is Fisher Price. So yes, it's a toy, but not just any toy. It's a music box teaching clock. So there's quite a lot going on here, but it's described as no flashy lights, no buttons to press, no fancy bits to get lost or broken.

You simply wind it up, listen to the music, watch for the little pictures on the clock face and turn the clock hands to learn the different times. So this might be very reminiscent for people. That's joyous, isn't it? The imagery across the teaching clock has a school scene, a teacher greeting children at the school entrance door, a child walking up to the school.

Around the side there's lots of little windows with different children in, one dressed as a cowboy, one with frost and snow seeping from the window. And on the back there's images actually which indicate the different hours of the day. So the different things that might be taking place at that point. So bath time apparently is 5pm. 6pm looks like parents sitting down and eating their tea.
