Because it's a walking city. It's a walking city. It's not intimidated by the Super Bowl. Some cities when the Super Bowl comes to town, the Super Bowl becomes their whole personality. New Orleans is so much bigger than our little football game.
And you know what? There's not like four places to go that are packed all the time. Yes. There's tons of little dives, bigger restaurants. Right. You can always find a place to go get a beer or go get some food.

Or the original that. Yes. I have no idea if they're lying or telling the truth. And so Dad went and looked, and he found home of the whatever.

And he believed them. And I did. I text Mike, and I said, Mike, I fell into the trap. Right. I'm in the home of the XXXX. Right. One of the many homes.

It's dad and Stephen A. Smith. Like Stephen A. Smith wanting to move the all-star game or game who the finals teams are because he wants a good – they got to handle two sites for that. That's a dangerous game. Super Bowl, we get one and everyone's got to bid for it. Like everyone's groveling to the NFL for the chance to do this.
The NBA, they actually have to leave it up to the teams that decide to be the best. Sucker business.
It's crazy. How do you guys feel about the game? Like so many people are saying, hey – Not a fan of this game. Don't want the matchup. Had the matchup two years ago, even though it was one of the greatest Super Bowls we've ever seen. People seem to not want it again, and that's surprising to me.
Why would you want this? People say they don't want it, yet the viewership will be just as high. Well, I know that. Listen, I actually like Philly in the game because of Saquon. I think they'll just hammer him. Keeps Patrick off the field. As long as Philly's not down two scores with five minutes to go, they better run the hell out of Saquon behind that whole line.

It's very easy to not pick Philadelphia. I made a promise. Total opposite of Dad. After the AFC Championship game and after the Championship round, I made a solemn vow to myself. I locked it in a time capsule, and I opened it this week, and it said,
don't pick against the chiefs there's going to be a million shiny objects out there they're going to tell you oh man the eagles they got so much talent on this roster look what howie roseman did this offseason it's so great don't do it right don't do it yeah i have to keep doing it i do eventually i'm going to be right i mean they're going to lose at some point the coin will land on tails at some point maybe uh go joe i was asking your dad last week uh because i think jason kelsey's in a uh
is it a weird predicament, right? Oh, yeah. Where he's saying that he's rooting for the Eagles, but I don't think he's really rooting for the Eagles. And you should root for your brother, right? He's retired. And so I was asking your dad, had Mike played at... If Notre Dame had played, was it Alabama? Yeah. Oh, no.
If you went to Alabama and they played Notre Dame in the National Championship, would he root for you or would he root for Notre Dame? And he said he would root for you. Oh, absolutely. So, A, do you believe that he'd be rooting for you over his school? And B... Should Jason Kelsey be rooting for his brother over his former team?
He said he is rooting for Travis to do well. Yes. And you could have rooted for me to do well and still been fine if Notre Dame won. No, I wouldn't want a jersey to win. What if it had been one of your brothers? What if it had been Bob? You guys played in the NFL at the same time. Because kids are different.
I fully think if this is one of Jason Kelsey's kids and it's in the same spot, totally different. But if it's one of your brothers, and let's say you already spent most of your career in Philly, whole career in Philly, but Bob's playing in a Super Bowl with somebody else against the Eagles.
If I'm not playing for Philly anymore, I'm rooting for my brother.
And Mike is right. Why is Jason feel the need to come out and root for the Eagles? He doesn't want the Eagles to win. The Eagles winning makes him look bad.
I do think he is like almost a mascot of that city, though. He was there for so long and was a part of so much winning for them. That's pretty tough to all of a sudden extract yourself from. I do think deep down where he plays, he doesn't talk about at parties, though. Those guys cry so much talking about each other and have such a loving relationship. There's no way.
Yeah, yeah. Mike, are these Super Bowls still tough for you to come to? Like, because you told me one time, like, they're difficult because you never, you wanted to, the first time you wanted to come to a Super Bowl was because you were playing. Right, right.

And what I am telling you is what everyone's going to say, and they'll be ripping me off, is this Eagle team is better built to beat this Chiefs team than the last Eagles team was to beat that Chiefs team. because of Saquon Barkley, because of their ability to keep Patrick Mahomes off the field, and that will be their strategy. I said it first. They will run the ball.
They will run it a lot in an effort, not only because it's a strength of theirs, but also to keep Patrick Mahomes off the field. That's it. And they had to upgrade at center and everything.

I mean, I have a lot of bad football bets. Like, I always see, like, these parlays that have, like, multiple touchdowns from both teams. And it's like, wait, so you expect, like, seven touchdowns to be scored in this game? Like, a lot of people do that. Right. And it's like, oh, well, I have this kicker for over one and a half. And then these three guys on the same team scores a touchdown.
And it's like, how many points do you think they're going to get? And you're like, you know. And then you have to get this many guys in order, like, you know. Yeah.
If you guys had to guess. Seahawks.
Seahawks with the points was the worst bet. Well, I would say it's more of a bad beat than a bad bet.
How many bets on the Super Bowl do you think Chris Felica currently has, like right now?

At the time we're taping this, which is just over a week before the Super Bowl, if you had to guess the over or under on how many bets Felica has made on said Super Bowl, and I set the number at six, would you say over or under?
I mean, are we counting all the ones that he probably made preseason that included one of these two teams to win it? Because if that's the case, it's way over. I mean, we're in the mid-double digits. No, Mikey, I'm including those.

On the actual game itself, if we're counting all of the losers that I had in terms of Super Bowl matchups and things like that, then yes, it is indeed over. But in terms of this game itself, the number of bets I currently have in pocket is zero. Really?

Really? Wow. Yep. Yeah, I have quite a few bets involving those cross-port parlays that I put together.

I have a good number of those with both the Eagles and Chiefs live to win. But in terms of any props or anything like touchdown scores, things like that, I have not played anything. And the big reason why... Okay.
is i like to play a lot of unders and i think what you're going to see over the next week or so is that you're going to see a lot of these prop total yardage totals reception totals carry all these the the initial public push is always to bet it over so like if you're looking for an under someone like me is looking for an under it's better off for me to wait because more often than not
I'm going to get a little bit of a better number than I would if I immediately rush out right away and bet an opener and bet an under, and it's bumped up a couple of yards. So, yeah, I'll be looking to hammer some unders over the next week or so.
All right, so when would you actually hone in, though? You will hone in and say, here are the Bears' bets, you know?
Over the next few days, probably Monday, Tuesday or so, I'll really take a good hard look at a lot of the props. Superbook put out their prop list last night, and that's usually once they put their stuff out, it gets hit right away and the numbers move. I'll take a look at all of their markets and just dial in and see what I'm going to bet. There is one bet that I am looking at right now to
But then I have my eye on involving a Xavier-worthy longest rush. All right, hold on a second. Or rushing yards.
Slow down a second, Bear. I have a pad and a pen. I got to write this down. So hold on a second. Mikey, you writing this down?
All right, go ahead.
All right, I heard Worthy, so go ahead.
Yeah, no, I'm going to be looking at Xavier Worthy's rushing yardage over in this game. I don't know what it is. I'm guessing it's probably going to be around – my guess is it's going to be around 5, 5.5. I'm seeing it right now at 5, 5.5. And if it's anywhere in that range, I'm going to go over. I know I just said I like playing a bunch of unders, but here I am with it over.
And the reason being is I'm not sure Isaiah Pacheco is fully – and fully immersed to be able to really contribute running-wise inside. We've seen Kareem Hunt run. They did not really have a great game on the ground against Buffalo last time out. So I think you're going to see Andy Reid and that offense try and get Worthy involved in the running game on some jet sweeps or anything like that.
So I'd be looking at Xavier Worthy if it's anywhere in the area of like five and a half and potentially going over because he's been used in the running game quite a bit the second half of the year.
Chris, speaking of the running game, the last few Super Bowls, I've really cashed in on quarterback rushing overs. And right now, the one I see is Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes, 29 and a half. He had 40 something yards against the bill. So if we were in a DraftKings state and we were doing this, I was wondering what how you would feel about 29 and a half for Patrick Mahomes.
That number actually got blasted, I think, last night. I think it was somewhere around 24.5, 25.5, and it's moved up quite a bit. So that number, I think it's hard because I would lean towards an under. The way I would actually look to bet Mahomes is look for if they have a longest rush year.
a single carry prop because odds are he'll have one of those scrambles where he breaks contained and he runs for 12, 13, 14 yards and they move the sticks and probably that'll be good enough to go over that, that yard.
But Mahomes is one of the, was a, it was a central figure in one of the worst beats ever in a, in a, in a Superbowl prop, the Superbowl against the 49ers a few years ago in Miami and, He had those ridiculous kneel downs where it was like, I'm going to lose seven yards. I'm going to lose eight yards. And he was way over his rushing total for the game.
And then those rushing yards, the kneel downs cost him. So I like thinking of like the game theory and how I think the game is going to play out. And if it's going to be a close game and you think maybe the Chiefs are going to win, then maybe there is a victory formation and he's losing completely.
maybe three kneel downs, maybe he's losing 8, 9, 10 yards on those three carries, and that ultimately could do you in. So I'd look for a longest individual carry for Mahomes more than I would just going over in the game.
So take the under.
Yeah, yeah. That's what I would do. I'd go under 29.5 if that's what it is now.
Okay, wait a second. Did you have the Mahomes over that year, the year he kept kneeling? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
You didn't sound bitter at all, Bear. Why do you think he remembers it? Does he remember it if he doesn't have that number?
It just takes that one time. That one time ruins it forever.
Go ahead, Mike. Speaking of longest rush, I feel like it doesn't matter what that number is for Saquon Barkley because he's going to get it on the first carry. Saquon Barkley longest rush. Last few times I've seen it in the high 20s. Are you still thinking that they're going to be able to do that this time around against the Chiefs?
I think it's 26.5, I think is what the Superbook put up there last night. And I know Bill Krackenberger, who's a really sharp pro-better, he immediately bet the under. And I don't know if I agree with him there. I think that Chiefs rush defense has been a little spotty. I would bet over 26.5 before I would under. But I certainly wouldn't argue with anyone here.
If, uh, if, if you did go, if you did go under thinking maybe Kansas city and spags and that D has things locked up, but, uh, they, they, they haven't been able to put this high enough. Like you said, the last couple of weeks, first carry last week, but 65 yards, wherever the hell it was to the house and nothing better than cashing a bet on the first play of the game.
But, yeah, I would lean towards Orwell just because he seems to always break at least one long run. The thing I'm going to be curious about with the Eagles in the running game and all these running props here, I'm curious what they post like Will Shipley's numbers at because we don't know if Gainwell is going to play. Gainwell is someone that Jeff Schwartz and I have loved to play overs.
We had his over in the – In the Rams game, we had his over the round before that as well, and they all hit. Then we had the overs again last time out against Washington, and he would have gone under, but he fell a half a yard short and then unfortunately got hurt on that kickoff return. So we'll see if he's going to be able to play, but maybe the Shipley numbers might be a little deflated too.
We don't know how much play he's going to get because that was a blowout game and how much will they bench Saquon to get him a little bit of a rest. So it's going to be curious to see how the Eagles' offense might be affected. Saquon get more carries, does Shipley get more carries, how they kind of balance that out. If you have an idea on that, you might have a little bit of edge on those numbers.
Guys, this is very exciting, and I'm sorry I didn't get to it sooner. The Bear is part of the Fox pregame show for the Super Bowl. I think the Bear would rather be on his couch watching the game, but he's going to be a part of the Fox pregame show. What are you doing for the Fox pregame show? That is amazing.
I'm probably going to be doing exactly what I'm doing with you right now, ripping through a bunch of... That's that I have made or would made or break, break down the game for, uh, for all of the, yeah, I'm looking forward to be, I'm sure it'll be a fun little, uh, a fun little segment.
And, uh, then I'll get, get back to the green room or the hotel or the sports bar, wherever the hell we're, we're going to be set up for silent. Well, definitely not the sideline. I can tell you that somewhere. I watched the game with the, of all my pals. Do you have access? Do you have access to the sidelines? I doubt it.
I know I have a credential, but I'm sure it just gets me in the dome for that day. And I'm sure, I shouldn't say I'm sure, but I would imagine that Fox has some type of green room set up somewhere that, I mean, I'll have access to that. But the NFL is never an access sideline. They like those clean sidelines. You know that. I know.
Where do you rank New Orleans in terms of cities that host championship games?
Oh, absolutely near the top. Everyone says that. Everybody. It's because the atmosphere, the food, everything about the city is great. Bourbon Street and just all the different restaurants. And, of course, you've got the casinos there, which always are never a bad thing. But, yeah, in terms of the city itself, that part is great. However, I won't say the top.
Because the airport is a pain in the ass. There are flights in and out of there or few and far between. Difficult connections. The weather can kind of be like you never hit or miss. It can be really rainy. It can be unusually chilly or it can just be like super swampy.
So it's like the core of it itself, like the heart of it, like the really, really important things, the food and the atmosphere, great. But all the ancillary stuff about flights in and out and weather potentially, eh. But I'm looking forward to getting down there.
I will tell you guys that the Bear was nice enough to invite me to dinner on Wednesday with Jeff Schwartz. He said I could bring a plus one. I'm not certain who that plus one is going to be. It might be Billy Gill, but Bear is asking me to have dinner at 515. I mean, holy shit, dude. I am old, but I'm not that old, man.
When I went to make the reservations, it was like – I put in like 730. I'm like, oh, perfect. 730, nothing. 715, nothing. 7, nothing. So I'm like, ugh. The first two highlighted boxes I saw were 515 and like 9. Right. And I'm like, god. I'm like, I definitely can't do 9 because we actually have to be up. on Thursday morning to do, uh, some bare bets, digital stuff.
So like we, I can't really have a night owl type thing. Right. But I'm like, you know what? I'm still going to be a little bit on ease. It's going to be my first day there. So I'm going to be a little bit on East coast time still, uh, the hour travel. I'll be looking at settling and there's no time limit on this dinner. We can get there. I understand. Five 15, enjoy a drink.
And then, okay, we're ready to order now. So Yeah. We can milk it a little bit.

That was at 19. I lost all three hands. Right.
Yeah. Yeah, I don't think I've ever walked out of Harrah's in New Orleans ahead. So it's probably to my benefit not to – And he takes it seriously. Even though I do want to go in there and see if they are using the Caesars Las Vegas sportsbook. That's what I am curious about because there is a Kentucky Derby future I'm looking to get down on. I love you so much, Bear. I really do. By the time Super Bowl Sunday rolls around, how many bets will you have on the Super Bowl?
Probably at least a dozen probably. I don't like to really spread myself super thin just because the more you have, the more likely you are to kind of level out and move closer to 500, but I'll hit a half a dozen or so, probably really good, and I'll probably wind up having like a like a total of 12 or so.
And I know everyone's going to want, everyone, everyone loves like the Anthem bets and like the, the, the Kendrick Lamar, like songless bets, but like, you can't really get down on those anymore. Like a couple of years ago, like when word got out of it, idiots out there tweeting the, Oh, the Anthem is going to be a minute and 37 seconds.
And like every offshore sports book in the world took it down. So you can get the information now for the most part. And yeah, you've got moles in there with the, with the rehearsal crew and Hey, it's going to be blah, blah, blah. But there really aren't many places that, uh, that take that anymore. Jeff Schwartz actually tells a great story about the, uh, the Gatorade color for the super bowl.
Right. Uh, like when, uh, uh, Jared Lorenzen the deceased quarterback for the Giants like I don't know if it was him or one of his buddies like they went by the like like peaked and all like the Gatorade color like the Gatorade buckets on the sideline and like looking at it's like purple Gatorade I'm like oh yeah the Gatorade is purple so.
Like everyone was like betting purple Gatorade that day because of the information directly from the sideline. So it's like a, he tells it much better than I do. So at dinner on Wednesday, or just listen to the rare bets podcast. He told the story on the pod the other day. So direct information from the sideline for Jared Lorenzen about the, the Gatorade being purple.
But I would imagine like Gatorade color, coin toss, length of the national anthem, all that stuff is beneath you there, right? Is that fair?
No, not at all. Really? No way. Money is money. It's everywhere. Exactly right. I feel shame when I bet those. the year and this is however many years ago it was the year that justin timberlake was the halftime act right uh a friend of a friend was involved with jt somehow and either helped him write songs or a band manager something And I was like, oh, let me find out here. And I hit my body up.
I'm like, hey, would you mind asking blah, blah, blah about, like, blah, blah. And he's like, yeah, what do you want to know? And I'm, like, looking at the prop list. I'm like, well, Justin Timberlake, we're wearing a hat. And you hear my buddy, I'm like, hey, is JT wearing a hat? And you're like, no. He says, well, Justin Timberlake have facial hair. He doesn't have a beard or anything, does he?
No. And I try, perfect. Right. And ever since then, my ability to find places to get down on halftime show props and anthem props has been few and far between.

No, I know. But you like the prop bets as long as you know the outcome in advance. Correct. Like if you know it's going to be heads, you'll bet the coin toss. Correct. But how would you possibly know that?

You know, tails never fails. And you got people out there saying like, yeah, well, the reason people say tails, because like the head is a little bit heavier on the commemorative coin. So naturally I am like, whatever, I'm, I'm, I'm going to like, I'm going to let you throw your money away on that. I'll stick to, I'll stick to Gatorade next time.
I'll stick to Xavier Worthy and his longest carry and who will score the last touchdown of the game, blah, blah, blah. Actually, there's another prop out there I heard this year, too. Will there be a touchdown via the tush push?

which I don't know what the price was now, but someone was telling me that there was a prop. I hate that damn play.

And then I think I heard one of the – like someone was saying like the official postgame, like they asked him about the timing of it, and they're like, well, the play clock is what the team is competing against on offense, so that's their defense, whereas the defense is trying to just create it. I'm like, boy, whatever.
Yeah, you hate it unless – Dumbass play. Unless you're a Jalen Hurts anytime touchdown better, then you love it, right? Yeah.
Or you bet yes on the tush push. Love the tush push.

But I'm with you. What's the best Super Bowl bet you've ever made? Like there's one that you remember, Bear. There's one you think back at. You're like, oh, man.
Torrey Holt. Torrey Holt, first touchdown scorer, Rams-Titans in that Super Bowl. I think it was like 15-16-1. And that was a – I remember ABC had the game, so I was working it. And it was in our little green room viewing area with a bunch of former players who obviously can't bet. And I was like, here's what I – Here's what I bet on.
And when Torrey Holt scored, one of the guys was like, wait a minute, you just won? I'm like, yeah. He's like, oh my God, that's awesome. So they're so obtuse to anything that's going on there. But yeah, Torrey Holt. Torrey Holt, first touchdown in Titans-Rams Super Bowl is my favorite experience. Patrick Mahomes, kneel down, rushing prop, over loss was a bad one.
I had Aaron Donald in the MVP in the Rams-Bengals Super Bowl, and he should have been, but he wasn't. I had Falcons money line against the Patriots when they pissed away the 28-3 lead. So more often than not, the Super Bowl memories that I have are – I had a Kyle Juszczyk touchdown last year as well, so that was a good score as well. But most of the Super Bowl memories are more bad than good.
Bear, I can't believe we haven't asked you yet. Who are you taking in the game, though? I don't think he knows yet. I think he has an idea of what he wants, but he's waiting for the right number. So you're aware this will not air until Tuesday, just so you know, Bear, okay?
No one's listening anyway. Right. I'm trying to get a lot of group think like out there and just kind of see where people's minds are and maybe not be on the side of the group. Think, uh, if that makes sense, like it seems like right now, most people are in the camp of, oh, the Eagles are the better team and they got Barkley now.
And they were, they were favored a couple of years ago and now they're better than they were. And So they should win, and Barkley should be the MVP. And that's kind of been the prevailing school of thought I've heard out there right now. But I'm really looking for any reason I can to bet the Chiefs because if you bet against the Chiefs and you lose, you're like, what the hell was I doing? Exactly.
You deserve whatever you get if you look to fade him. I mean, they've lost, what, one real game? in the last year. Yeah. That was the game to the Bills.
Yeah.
And, like, the playoff losses that Mahomes has had have just been, like, the one Super Bowl they lost where they were without, what, four starting offensive linemen against Tampa Bay.
Yeah.
It's hard to pull the trigger and bet against them. I think when push comes to shove, you see, hey, shove, butt, should push. See what I did there? I saw what you did there. I'll probably wind up betting – Betting Kansas City would probably be the way I think I'm going to wind up going.
It's all about can you put your head down on the pillow at night and fall asleep peacefully, okay? And listen, if you bet Mahomes and you win, great. I'm with you on this. You bet against Mahomes and you lose, you'll have sleepless nights for like a week, you know?

I was going to say betting the Jets to win the Super Bowl preseason this year. Does that count? Did you really bet that? Of course you did.

You don't even cash that ticket. You frame it. I did because I was not. Think back to the beginning of the season where we were, brah. The roster that they had and the way the schedule shook down. People weren't sold on Buffalo being great this year. I wasn't sold on the Dolphins. You knew the Patriots were going to be one of the worst teams in the league.
And it's like you could have seen a scenario where they were starting like 7-1 and making a real run and then It just went downhill from there. But, yeah, never, never, never again. As SVP said on his pod a couple of weeks ago about his travel back from the college football championship game, never again.
Never again will I bet on the Jets to make or win the Super Bowl because hope is a dangerous thing with that. You never, ever, ever, ever do you want to give yourself an ounce of hope and optimism with the Jets because they'll just absolutely kneecap you.
Well, since you brought them up, what did you make of their coaching hire?
I liked it.
Same.
I mean, in turn, I heard it was either going to be him or Joe Brady were the two front runners. Right. I think it's good to have someone maybe, maybe who, who is there and is familiar with the organization and was there the, the, the last time they had an ounce of, uh, positive coaching and a positive front office and positive results and coming close to the Superbowl.
We will, we'll see that the, obviously the staff is going to be important. What they do at quarterback is going to be important. They'll have the benefits of a, a lesser schedule this year, which, which will be good. But yeah, what do you do with quarterback? I mean, is Aaron going to come back for another year? Are they going to go Tyrod Taylor for a year?
Are they going to find another bridge quarterback for the year? you're probably not going to be drafting a quarterback where they are at 10 because they have so many different holes that they need to fill. But obviously the NFL is a league where you can turn things around pretty quickly.
But I think someone there who kind of understands what Jets fans have gone through for the last however many years, I think that's a good thing. Especially he lived it in Detroit as well. He was part of a massive turnaround in Beaconette City, I believe. So maybe he can –
do the same with the jets i just hope i don't have the number of times we're going to uh see uh mark ingram catching the fake spike and again we're going to stare in front of aaron glenn until the next start of the regular season how many times we're going to see that a lot but bear you know what he wants to be there and you're right he knows the uh he knows the pain of the jet fans he knows what we want he knows how bad it's been for how long and for how long uh but most importantly
He hopes that this is his last job in the NFL, and that's very important. We don't normally get a coach who this is the final destination for. Aaron Glenn wants this to be his final destination, so I like that.
Well, no, we had a coach who it was his final job, Rich Cotite.

If only the team would make sense there.

Do you want Aaron Rodgers back? Yeah, I know. That's an answer. It was such a good answer, man.

I think we should just leave it. He's a better option than anything that's probably out there, right? Yes, he is. I think if you could bring back him for... For one year, does he have one year left on his deal? I don't even know.
No. They'd have to restructure it a little bit. But if he wants to be there, they'll make it work. Bear, he's the best option they have.
Yeah, for a year, and then maybe you draft to take a flyer on like a quarterback. Axe and dart. Well, he's going to move into the first round. He's the pie riser right now. He's going to wind up moving into the first round. But you draft someone that – that maybe has a chance. I don't know who that is right now.
And then next year, obviously, Nussmeier is going to be a guy who would probably be QB1 if he was coming out this year. So there might be some options next year as well. But I think if you're looking for one year, I think you're probably better off seeing if Aaron wants to come back for one more year.

I, it makes all the sense in the world. And I'm, I'm glad they, I mean, they needed to do something because you were not going to be able to go into that next season with Emery Williams as your starting quarterback. But the, the issue now is you need to find people around it.
And you need some of those recruits to step up at wide receiver and tight end and be players that they thought they could be. Maybe you can find someone in the second portal go around who the hell knows. He changes defensive coordinator. Seems like it's probably a, But yeah, you'll need your secondary to be better, and they've made steps to address that.
I think you're probably looking at another schedule that's a little bit more difficult this year. They open with Notre Dame down there at Joe Robbie. I'll never call it anything else because you can't take the guy's name off of a stadium. But I think... If you're looking at the fact that you've got Notre Dame, you've got Florida non-conference, you should be in the ACC championship game next year.
And again, they should have been in the ACC championship game this year with the best quarterback they've had in school history, but their defense was a sieve and they couldn't. But are they – I hate – they'll never be back to what I know them as and what all of –
our my generation of miami alums and friends and fans and no of no of them is being back but uh and he had to to not expect them to compete uh to make the college football playoff next year they'll absolutely compete to do that uh mikey it just dawned on me i never heard that tape before and he's right once you put someone's name on a stadium you can't take the name off the stadium that goes that goes in our next book

All right, so I do a thing called Weekend Observations. Demario Davis with us here. It's Super Bowl week. It's Radio Row. We will get to what he's doing on behalf of Ashley here. in just a second, but I was watching a game and Tom Brady, I do a thing called weekend observations where I just write down a bunch of sports observations in my notes. We try to make them funny and entertaining.
And here's what I wrote down. This was Tom Brady. Okay. No one wraps up a ball carrier like the Mario Davis. That's my job, man.
I got to get him down, dog. I got to get him down.
But do you agree there is no one that wraps up a ball carrier like DeMario did?
First of all, you got to put an epic pause on that. Yes. I think, man, I do take a lot of pride in tackling. And what a lot of people don't know is I didn't play defense before. Really, until my senior year in high school.
Really?
Yeah, I thought I was going to be a receiver. I knew I was going to make it to the pros. That was my goal. I'm going to make it to the pros.
When did you know you were going to make it to the pros?
I really knew when I got to college. But when I said it in fourth grade, the first time I said it, I was like, I'm going to NFL. I meant it.
You spoke it into existence.
It was never like, you know, I hear teachers talking, you can't just have a plan A, you need to have a plan B. Right. I was like, man, I'm going to have a plan for my plan A. Right. You know, and that's my mindset. So I play receiver, and I had a coach. He brought me over to defense, and he showed me how to tackle. Coach McCann, shout out to Coach McCann.
He taught me how to tackle, and it was a shoulder tackle. And I still use the form that he showed me to this day. You got people who tackle with their face. You got guys who spear. You got guys who do like a little sling tackle. You got people who cut tackle. But I use a shoulder tackle, and it's been effective.
Wow. I cannot believe you said you set out. So you said at an early age, I'm going to be an NFL football player. And then you would not stop until you achieve that goal. That's incredible.
I mean, at that age, you don't know what you're really declaring. Right. All I know is I'm a dogmatic person. My kids are like, I got six kids, my son and one of my daughters are like this. Like when their mind is set on something, even as their mom and dad, we can't sway them.
Wow.
We got to figure out a way to redirect them. Right. And I'm like that. So when I said, you know, my uncle asked me, what do you want to be? I'm like, I want to go to the NFL. We had just watched a playoff football game on TV. The whole family was watching. Sure. I'm like, I want to be my whole family sitting around TV watching me.
Right.
And I was like, I'm going to the NFL. Yeah. And I meant it. And. Everything was – I mean, I started practicing doing my autograph when I was, like, in the sixth grade. Really? You know, and it's like I used the autograph that I – I practiced, like, a thousand different ones. Right. And I was like, oh, that's the one I'm going to use.
Right.
And that's the same one I do to this day.
That's pretty incredible. Are you having fun here in New Orleans?
Oh, man, listen. Where else would you rather be? It's a great city. Man, it's an amazing city. It's one of the most unique cities in the country. Right. It's great for, like, weeks. You know, come get your dose, and then you go on where you got to go. Right, get it in small doses, you're saying? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's so much to take in.
I'll gain too much weight if I stay here too long, man.
Man, the food is unbelievable. Everybody I talk to, what they're looking forward to is the eating. Right. Man, so much culture here. It's Mardi Gras week. Yes. It's festival season. It's kicking in. Man, listen, it's an amazing time. And people are just getting here. Opening night was great last night. Right. You just can tell the energy is going to be crazy.
Listen, this game is about to be phenomenal. Yeah. That's what, you know, it's a lot of games that. No, Super Bowl could go any kind of way. Sure. You might get an epic Super Bowl like Ravens and 49ers last time it was in New Orleans. Or you might get when Patriots played the Rams. Nobody remembers that game.
Right. Yeah, you're right.
I think this is going to be an epic game. You got two phenomenal quarterbacks. I mean, I'm looking at those guys when they came in, opened the night, and they on the stage together. They doing the high fives and doing all that. But you looked in their eyes, man, you saw two killers. Yeah. And this game is about to be good, man.
Well, it was great the last time they played, right?
Oh, yeah, yeah. It was a phenomenal game. Went down to the end. Mahomes proved his greatness once again. But I think that sat in the back of Jalen Hurst's mind. And, you know, A.J. Brown, them guys, they haven't forgot. And now they got Saquon. They coming to town.
Well, they have the thing that can keep Patrick Mahomes off the field, and that's Saquon in a running game, right?
Yeah. I mean, you know, when you're playing the Chiefs, it's really one thing to keep – keep Mahomes and Andy Reid off the field at the end of the game.
Right. Yes.
I think last year at the Super Bowl, we knew what was going to happen, even though they were backed up against the wall. Mahomes had the ball at the end, and it was like, yeah, you can go ahead and cancel Christmas. And the way he went down the field was so epic. Yes. It was like watching poetry in motion.
Because you knew he was going to do it. It's just a matter of watching it play out, right?
Yes.
Now, what I will tell you is – I think people would be okay with Andy Reid on the field, by the way, as opposed to Patrick Moe. That's his machine.
Let's not forget who's behind it, man. Right, right. Having a great offensive mind at the end of the game. Right. You know, you've got to have a general that's on the field doing it, but you've got to have a great play caller, and they've got to be in sync. But I tell you what the Eagles have that can pose a threat.
Okay.
that I think that the 49ers might have not had at that moment. You need somebody that can make that game-changing sack. Right. You remember when Aaron Donald was in the Super Bowl? Yes. He got that big sack at the end of the game? Yes. The only thing that can stop a quarterback like Mahomes that's on that Tom Brady level, if he hasn't quite got to it, he's right there knocking at the door.
Right.
They're going down the field. They already know where they're going with the ball when they get to the line of scrimmage.
Sure.
And everybody knows it's really just like don't drop the pass.
Right.
He's going to get the ball to the right guy, going to make the right decision all the way down the field. The only person that can be effective, this is why the most important defensive position is a pass rusher. Somebody got to be able to get to him inside of three seconds. Right. And I think the guy who's made so many of these type of epic sacks is Brandon Graham.
Yeah.
That's what he does.
Right.
He's always making that phenomenal sack. So if we get to the last drive of the game and Mahomes is driving down and Brandon Graham gets a sack push, I'm going to be like, the Mario Davis called this. I'm going to say that.
And I like that because you're saying for the first time Mahomes won't get it done. You're saying –
I'm not saying that. I am not saying that. You are not going to protect me with that. I just said don't be shocked if that happens.
Do you want me to ask you again at the end and you say Mahomes is going to get it done? But that way you have all sides covered.
You know what I'm saying? You can't be wrong. I just said I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. No, I know. But for me, I think if I had to make a pick, I'm saying 3P is going to happen.
Okay. Which defense do you trust the most, though? Because defensive linemen, after quarterback, the D linemen are the best players on the field in the Super Bowl.
Yes, yes. The defense I trust the most. Oh, man.
They're both good.
Man, they're both really good. Number one pass defense. I know. With some defensive linemen that can get it done.
Yeah, and spags on the other.
But, man, listen, that corner blitz.
Yes.
On Josh Allen. Yes. Oh, my gosh. Nobody saw that coming.
Can you explain that? Because you're marveling at something. I don't think we talk about this all the time.
Yeah.
We have no idea what we're watching. Yeah. So can you explain why that was so, like even to someone like you who's played the game your entire life, why was that so surprising to you?
Yes, because when an offensive line kind of comes out and they're looking, they pretty much have numbered where the blitz can come from. And it's so many guys, and so it can be kind of your four defensive linemen or your three linebackers or two linebackers and a nickel. And that's most of the time who you're watching.
If it's the safety start moving, which is the guys who are on the back, if they start rotating, it's one of them blitzing. Very rarely do you think that the corner is coming. And so if you've shown that, the team's kind of aware of it, but it's just hard to pick up. And it has to be called at the right time. And that's what they did. Because it's so risky.
If you blitz the corner, you're almost giving up a first down because it's hard to hide that the corner is blitzing without rotating the safety over there. Sure. So it's like 10 yards of grass that he can just throw right to and get the first down.
So they saved it for that time.
They saved it for the right time. The quarterback missed it, and he almost scrambled right into the blitz.
I know. So you're telling me Josh Allen had no idea that was coming.
No, he didn't know it was coming. That's amazing. He would have got to a different play. Wow. He would have got to a different play. He missed it. He missed it.
Tell us what – that's incredible. Thank you for breaking that down. Because, you know, as fans, we watch football, right? We're just watching the quarterbacks. We don't know what's going on inside the trenches, you know?
I mean, and that's what a quarterback has to be able to diagnose. And so, like, when you talk about the hardest position to play, I don't want to just say Josh Allen missed it. It looks like he missed it. But they have to diagnose all that to know exactly where they're going to go with the ball, get the team to the perfect play call.
That's what – when you talk about, like, the goal to do, and that's what Tom Brady would do. He would be able to look at the defense and know exactly what they were in and get the team to the – the play that was going to give them the optimal chance of success.

We partnered with Covenant House many times over holiday events, but we got a chance to donate 100 beds to that place. Man, that meant so much to them. Just imagine, you know.
a young person having their own place, you know, and they're feeling safe and being in a nice new bed. Yeah. So that was great. We remodeled a house. This amazing lady, she has a son that's autistic and she does so much, you know, Life has a lot of adversity, but she's just taking it and blessing people. She's an amazing singer, amazing, does hair in the city, just helps so many different people.
So we got a chance to remodel her whole house with Ashley Furniture. That's so cool, man.
They have been great, man.
And it's great to see them connected to the community and doing work for people and changing their lives. So it's been great. They've been a phenomenal partner.
It's great to see the pride you have when you're telling those stories. Yeah, I mean,
I mean, it's real work. And we live in a world that's moving so fast and a lot of things are happening. But, man, don't forget there's people around you.

And everybody's going through something and everybody could use something.

Everybody's realized people that have to be on point in times like this. So we got a chance to bless a nurse. one of the first responders who was having to navigate that tragic moment. And we were able to give her two Super Bowl tickets, you know, courtesy of our partnership with Ashley. That smile on your face, man. Yeah, man, that was awesome.

You cannot give yourself a curfew Super Bowl week when you're 35, man.
I had to, man. You do that when you're my age, which is 50. My better days are behind me. I used to be a contender, especially at the bar. No, but that's kind of what I had to do. I looked at my schedule and I was like, huh. I don't know if I could do this with a headache.
Right.
I know. I love this city. My uncle played for the Saints for 10 years.
Right.
So I used to go to the Manning Academy here in Louisiana. So I used to come every year in New Orleans in January. And so, like, It's kind of fun actually doing it for work now. Yes. Every time I'm here, I'm like, oh, yeah, the city rocks. Right. People here are really nice and cool and fun. So I'm loving it so far.
Yeah, it's a great city. It really is. It's a great big event city. It is. It's a walking city.
It's a walking city, yeah.
That's the big thing.
That's kind of, you know, I don't know if you've been to the Combine in Indy. No. That's why I never think they'll move it. Right. Because everything is like three blocks from each other. Yes. Bars included, restaurants, but just like where the facilities are. Yes. And that's just such an underrated. No one wants to get in the car for five to ten minutes and do everything.
So I think that's what's great about this right now.
So I'm glad you brought up the combine because I tell Levitard all the time that if you just walk into St. Elmo's during combine week, you'll hear everything you need to hear.
That and Prime 47. Oh, really? Which is a restaurant.
Is that a new spot?
No, it's been around. It's just that time doesn't exist in Prime 47. Oh, really? Yeah, yeah. It's the same lighting. Next thing you know. Yeah, same lighting no matter what. And the thing that happens during the combine is just a lot of guys, a lot of coaches and personnel guys, they're interviewing until 11 p.m.
So, like, really the networking, quote, unquote, the convention part of the Combine, it's, like, starts at midnight. It's, like, not even just drinking-wise. It's just, like, people just finally are stepping out and actually can, like, hang out and stuff. So it's kind of a surreal thing where it's, like, all right, 11 o'clock, guess I'll start out.
You know, I feel like I'm in New York or Miami, actually. Yeah.
Right. That's past your curfew, though.
Yeah. I hang out longer in Indy than I do in New Orleans.
That's how you're supposed to do it, right? The places you shouldn't be in.
Yeah, I know. I know. And I live in Vegas, too, and I'm acting like I'm just like, yeah, don't even handle this.
So Vegas, for me, that was a nightmare, like in terms of a Super Bowl.
I did meet you there, and I was like, okay, you did. I was surprised. No, no, I remember, Nate. Yes, yes. I normally don't, to be honest with you. No, that's the thing. I felt bad for people there because you could tell everyone's excited at Vegas. And then after day four, and you guys had some crazy weather too. It was freezing. And day four, I got to go home every night.
And I just saw everybody worn out. It's just being in those casinos. It's like the little city states and you can't get out.
And not only that, it was like to get... Once you got to the media center, like to the front doors, you're still outside. You were just starting your trip. It took like 30 minutes from that point just to get into the media. It took me two seconds today.
Yeah, I know. That's what's so great. My hotel's two blocks away.
I know. It's pretty awesome. Tell us about the Football 301 on Yahoo Sports.
So we've got Charles McDonald, who I know has been on some Levitard shows. Yeah, friend of the show. Yeah, friend of the show. So him and I and Matt Harmon, who does reception perception. His background's a lot more in fantasy, but really we talk about X's and O's, scheme stuff. Really a lot of deep dive stuff. Charles helps me kind of come out of my little lair sometimes.
Actually, I got to be a normal person about some of it. But really just like there's a lot of like what happened, when happened. We're really trying to go why, how. I think a lot of people like when they can just point out one thing to their buddy at the bar. They go like, hey, hey, this linebacker's pretty good. Or hey, they like run this coverage or something of that sort.
My background, I kind of done everything in football, played, coached, scouted. I was a ball boy. I think with just all that has kind of led me to kind of go like, oh, maybe this. I was around a lot smarter people through osmosis. I go, maybe look out for this. Maybe look for this guard that's weak against this blitz. And I think that's kind of like a nice angle for us.
It's a lot of fun to kind of dive into.
So I think it's interesting because Dan and I say every week, and I just had this experience with DeMario Davis, who explained to me why that corner blitz that Spaggs put on Josh Allen. He, like, actually took me through it as to why it was so special and how we actually set it up. Because Dan and I have been talking about this for years. We don't know what we're watching on Sundays. That's a lot.
And that's what people think the All-22, you know, the big X and O stuff where you can see all the players on there. People think that's like, oh, you guys don't know what you're looking at and stuff. But you have to rewind it a million times because... Like, you don't always see what the guard is doing from the sideline angle. You don't see downfield what the safety is doing.
And that play was brilliant. I mean, we had 500 backlash breakdowns on that play and everything. But that's what's really cool, especially with blitz stuff, is that there's layers to it. And there's rule breakers. And that's why I love Spagnuolo. I was a former offensive guy. But watch him. He breaks rules. And that's what – it's a total F me, F you kind of thing.
Right.
And he's able to do it. And you saw like that perfect fourth down play. It was like, yeah, that's what Spaggs does to you.
Crazy.
He does the 5-0-1 thing. Yes. That you're not – you are prepared for it, but it would be like a leap of faith to get there for an offense. And that's what's really cool when you start dissecting it.
He is maybe – and I've had this discussion with him. He and I have become friends. But I've told him, like, I know he wants to maybe be a head coach again. Why leave this quarterback? Why leave this coach? Why leave this situation? There's nothing wrong with being the greatest coordinator that's ever lived.
That's right. And his reputation in my mind now, speaking to this, is he went from head coach retread, okay, interesting defense coordinator, to now I consider him one of the greatest defense coordinators of all time.
Yes.
And I truly mean this. I think that some of the game plans, just like Belichick, should go to Canton. Because he's one of the best game plan coordinators. Once the playoffs start, it's so week to week. As far as like, all right, that game plan, throw it out because we're starting a whole new one.
Different team, different game plan.
And now we've got all 18 weeks to look at the previous film as opposed to maybe four in the middle of the season. Him and Andy Reid on the opposite side are the best. And now they have a bye week. So that's how I look at it too. It's like, all right, you probably paid pretty well too. And everybody now has the respect level has gone through the roof.
So you're saying Andy and Bill are the coaches who are the best at getting their teams prepared week to week.
It's not just week to week. It's once we hit playoff time, they have those hyper-specific game plans. So maybe that's the best way to put it. They're the ones that are able to create these one-off game plans, the one-off plays that's like, oh, that was cool. I even come back to two years ago when these two teams played in the Super Bowl.
Remember the kind of back-and-forth touchdowns, the motions and stuff? Because Andy Reid was able to watch every Eagles game where the coaches were from the whole regular season. And they took those plays, which are popular, but they took it from the Jaguars doing it against the Eagles in like week four. And that's the difference is they put in the work and go, oh, that's interesting.
We're going to put it in now. And that's what the extra bye week does. It gives you the time to do it. Interesting. Yeah, that week to week. I keep saying week to week. I should say that specific playoff game plans, they are the best at it.
Who's not doing that?
That's a good question.
Yeah.
I'm trying to even look.
Like is Sirianni doing it? I think Sirianni gets a raw deal.
He does, right? I mean, they keep winning and everything.
They've been to two Super Bowls, four years, playoffs, four consecutive years.
I thought one thing. underrated aspect of Sirianni was the year before they won that first Super Bowl run, so that would have been 21, he benched himself as a play caller. And usually you'd be like, ha, ha, ha. But I thought the humility to go, no, Steichen, you got the plays. I'm going to bench him.
Because they were struggling the first four or five weeks, I want to say it was, and then they had a bye. And they launched from there, and then they got A.J. Brown and continued the next year. Steichen's now a head coach.
That's not an easy thing. With the ego involved in this sport, think about that. He stripped himself of play calling responsibility.
Usually what you see is the opposite. Oh, I'm taking it away from him. He's fine. He's the first one in front of me in the fire going, yeah. He's the human meat shield for me. And I kind of look back then. I respect him for that because not a lot of head coaches would do that, especially ones that you know, finally get their first head coaching job. I'm like, I'm going to be a play caller.
Look at me. I'm the next McVay Shanahan.
Right.
So that's one thing where I was like, hey, I mean, there is something to that. And there's something to being like, I hate the term, but the CEO type that kind of gets everyone organized. And if they're, I mean, they keep winning games.
Oh, I mean, listen, Philly should be embracing him. He is Philly.
I mean, they should be giving him a bunch of vowels in it.
Philly should want him to coach that team forever, man.
Just good luck, Charm.
Listen, I said this to Levitard. He got mad at me. But I said, if Sirianni wins this Super Bowl, he is the greatest Eagles coach in Eagles history.
Another one got ran out. Like, Doug, Andy Reid got ran out. I know. I know. Sirianni can still win something. Hey, going to two and winning one is a lot better than a lot of other coaches. I know, even if you end up as the Larry Coker of NFL coaches, it's not the worst.
It's not the worst thing. Larry Coker had the greatest start, I think, in college football history as a coach.
And that's how I feel about him a little bit, too. It's like, hey, yeah, he's taking over a Ferrari, but he's keeping it on the road. And I know every time they lose, it's the funniest little, like, You know, everybody starts dropping rumors and gossip and everything. But I haven't gotten a lot of that lately because I think things have been pretty good in Philly.
How about Fangs in terms of getting his team ready? Because this is such it's such a fascinating Super Bowl where you have Mahomes, you have Jalen Hurts, you have all this offensive talent, right? but the defenses are strong, the coordinators are great. It could be a low-scoring game.
I think it's going to be a lot of long drives, too. Both of these defenses are top five in allowing explosive plays, and the fact that they don't allow them, I should say. And I think that you can be methodical against both of them. I think the Rams game was interesting against this Eagles defense, where they were really doing a lot of at-you runs around a concept called duo.
But what it is is just vertical, just power, basically, without anyone pulling. And you can do that. If you're willing to live with four, five, six-yard gains, yeah. And the Chiefs are able to do that. That's what they want to do. They're not very explosive anyways, but they're hyper-efficient. So I think that's a lot of long drives. There's a line I've been kind of giving.
I think this is going to be the shortest Super Bowl. I agree. Even with the halftime show.
Listen, it was a great game two years ago, but now you have Saquon. And to Sirianni's credit and Howie Roseman's credit, to be able to get Saquon from the Giants, which is ludicrous and absurd. But you now have the guy, if he doesn't break one for 80, you can have those 11-play, 10-minute drives. The most important thing about him, we've kept Mahomes off the field.
That's it. And both teams want to do that. The Chiefs want to go, well, we don't want them hitting big play after big play on us. So I am really curious. My eyes are going to Spaggs versus Jalen Hurts and the Eagles off the line. It really is because... Spags is one of the best, like, he's one of the biggest blitzers, but he runs a lot of zone blitzes.
And that's the difference than man coverage blitzes. And Jalen Hurts has been better against the blitz, but if you remember last year in the playoffs, Todd Bowles and the Bucs, they kind of exposed him a little bit. And he's not good against zone blitzes, though, because it's just a little more confusing. It's a little more exotic.
So that's one thing where it's like, all right, if they get an explosive play off of it, that's going to decide the game. But I think Spags are going to try and bait them into that one turnover that can totally swing the game.
Right. X's and O's are important, man, just so you know. They are. It's on our car over there. Like, I know you want to try to drag out your personality and all that. No, we need X's and O's, okay? Let me be the jackass. You give us X's and O's, okay?
I'm fine with that. This is more of my language, so we're good.
No, I love the X's and O's, though. I really do because, again, we don't know what we're watching.
Yeah, so I'll tell you one little inside baseball play. It's a coverage called Palms, and it's a quarters coverage, so two high shell. And on it, it's basically a defense trying to run cover two and cover four at the same time. And what you're trying to do is bait the quarterback into throwing to the slot, like a quick out route, and thinking that you can just have nice open space over there.
Jalen Hurts loves throwing those.
Right.
The Chiefs are one of the best defenses at running this. So they'll blitz. Quarterback will think he's hot. And there's the corner who looks like he's running with the outside receiver. He'll turn around and be there to pick off and blow up the slot or the tight end. I feel like that kind of play is going to be the one that decides the game. It's what the Chiefs do.
It also baits Hurts into throwing what he wants to throw. But this is where I love this stuff is that, okay, I know what you know what I know what you know. All right, does Kellen Moore go like, all right, now throw the vertical route right behind it? Oh, I like that.
And that's what I, if he does, if I see that little hole shot, you know, that little 15 to 20 yarder towards the sideline, I'll be like, oh, the Eagles got some stuff. If I see that pick or that batted ball or that blow up on a quick out route, that's where I'm like, okay, the Chiefs got some stuff.
There's going to be those little kind of indicators like who's kind of maybe has the mental edge right away.
I love it. It seems, maybe I'm wrong here, it seems like you think the Eagles have a pretty good shot here. I'm leaning Chiefs. Are you? Yeah. You're not going to be surprised if the Eagles win.
No, I'm not. I'm doing the same thing, by the way.
I know top to bottom the Eagles are the better team, but I'm not betting against this guy.
That's right. And there's nothing where I look at with this Chiefs team where I'm like, oh, that's a glaring weakness. Everything's solid. They just don't create explosives. But the thing is, Mahomes can be methodical and can nickel and dime you. And you got Andy Reid on a bye week, and you got Steve Spagnuolo on a bye week. I'd never go against it. But I do. Eagles can run the ball, stop the run.
Create explosive plays, stop explosive plays. That's a really good formula, too. No doubt. How's the Land Cruiser set, by the way?

Which part of football did you love the most? Was it the ball boy? Was it playing? Was it the coaching? Or is it this?

I mean, ball boy is such a great time.
Ball boy was pretty great. I was in high school, middle school. I was with those old Vikings teams with Moss and Culpepper and stuff. Oh, wow. Yeah, I saw some real s**t. Oh, my God. Yeah, some of the greatest s**t. Yeah, so Moss lateral stuff.
Yeah, Chris Carter just like unhinged, right?
Yeah, so, yeah. Never shutting up. Yeah, Terry O'Smith. I said that respectfully to Chris Carter. He was just wired that way. Well, that's also a warp in my line of thinking is that I watched Randy Moss, Dante Culpepper, Chris Carter play. John Randall, Kevin Williams, all these guys. And I'm like, oh, yeah, every receiver is like Randy Moss. Yeah, right.
And then I've never seen someone near that ever in my life. Not even close. Not even close. It's like, oh, there's a lot more Nate Burlesons than Randy Mosses. I love Nate, too.
There's a lot more Chris Carters than Randy Mosses. And I say that respectfully again. Two shots. He's done nothing to me, Chris Carter.
He doesn't deserve any of this. No, but being a ball boy, even though I was making like $20 a week, it was invaluable. I remember the Vic play where two guys ran into each other in the rankings. I was there for that one. I saw a lot of kind of cool moments. I saw Brett Favre play five feet for me, Peyton Manning. Amazing. That probably is the best because maybe I was also 16.
And it comes with zero expectations too. Just get the ball there. Just throw it on your hand. Make sure it spirals. You can't throw overhand to refs.
Oh, really? Yeah, they hate it. Wait, what do you mean?
So there's a preferred throwing style. Time out.
You were throwing balls back into the game, onto the field of play, two referees. They needed a ball. Yes. And you're telling me you could not throw it overhand.
Okay. They get mad at you if you throw it overhand because some of them can't catch. Okay. So you have to throw an underhand throw, and they prefer with a little lob.
Oh, really?
So they can adjust to it and everything like that.
Right.
So, no, but, like, and I was a quarterback, so, like, there's times I was like, fuck it. Let it rip. Let it rip. And one time a ref actually loved that because it was like a no-huddle two-minute situation. He's like, thanks for getting the ball out there. And I was like, oh, God, I thought I was going to be fired. But, no, it's true. I one time threw it overhand, and a ref lectured me. Really?
He's like, do not. throw it overhand. He's like, you do not know what my hands are like.
Who was the ref? I don't know.
I know. I wish. Who's the ref? I know. Well, a lot of those guys are retired now, too. So, yeah, I know. Has there been a ref? It might have been Hockley. It might have been Hockley. Oh, really?
Was there a ref you didn't like, and even though you knew he wanted you to toss it underhand, did you just beam them right in the face or something like that? Well, actually, speaking of Hockley.
Oh, really? This is fascinating. Nothing personal he did to me, but one thing if I were to ask. All I want is ball boy stories from you. Go ahead. bulky for a reason. He knows he's on TV. One thing with Hockley I always notice. Okay, so there's the orange guy that says TV timeout. Takes the pause. Offense will be in a huddle sometimes and everything.
A lot of refs just go into the quarterback like, hey, five seconds. And then back out of there. Hockley goes... He had five seconds and just hangs because he knows the camera. He's going to be, when I come back from career show, where they always show the offense breaking the huddle. Yes. There's Hockley always going, and then he goes. Showing off the guns.
Every quarterback in the league knows that. So everyone was like, yeah. So when I've been on the league, people were kind of busting balls about it. So I got to make sure to get that extra couple seconds in there.
