Chapter 2: What makes Roebuck, South Carolina unique?

230.733 - 263.198 James Petrigallo

I think it's time to sit back. Let's all clear the lungs, arms to the sky. Let's all shout. Shut up and give me murder. Let's do this, everybody. Okay. Let's go on a trip, shall we? We are going to South Carolina this week. Okay, fine. This is Roebuck, South Carolina. R-O-E-B-U-C-K. Roebuck. Northwestern South Carolina, this is. This is nowhere near... Like Myrtle Beach or anything like that.

0

263.238 - 286.737 James Petrigallo

This is up toward North Carolina and Tennessee and all that over there. It is about an hour and a half to Charlotte. That's the closest major city. You can tell it's up there more. About four hours to Nixonville, South Carolina. That's down by Myrtle Beach, actually. It was our last episode. The Ballad of Bambi, which was crazy. Definitely a crazy episode.

0

286.757 - 308.507 James Petrigallo

People living in the yard in a tent and then There's murder. It's crazy. This is in Spartanburg County population here. Three thousand four hundred eighty two. It's a small town and it was even smaller back when we're going to talk about it. So it's very small median household income here. The rest of the country, about sixty nine thousand here. Fifty four thousand one fifty three. Lower.

0

308.767 - 334.514 James Petrigallo

Median home price, $275,500. That's pretty good. Not bad, but on $54,000 a year, that's a tough one. That's a tough one. History of this town, a little bit of it. It was named for Revolutionary War officer Benjamin Roebuck. And Roebuck, the town, not the man, is home to the Walnut Grove Plantation, which is a preserved 18th century farmhouse and tourist attraction located

0

335.911 - 343.314 James Petrigallo

And one of the daughters of the original owners, Kate Moore, was a scout for General Daniel Morgan during the Battle of Cowpens.

344.395 - 345.535 Jimmy Wissman

A girl was?

345.555 - 364.284 James Petrigallo

Yeah. She was rocking it out. The county was founded in 1785 and named after the Spartan Rifles, which were a Spartan regiment, which was the local militia during the American Revolutionary War. So they're very much into the Revolutionary War in this part, which is nice because there's a lot of parts of South Carolina that are into a different war.

366.345 - 384.975 James Petrigallo

The ship, the USS Spartanburg County, is named after Spartanburg County. So there's that. Reviews of this town. We've never been there. I don't know anything about Roebuck, South Carolina. Here's five stars. Roebuck is a small community that's quiet and easy to get around. It's tight-knit, safe, and serene.

385.335 - 402.22 James Petrigallo

I've lived in Roebuck for nine years now, and the most danger I've been in is when a snake poked its nose into the family backyard. Okay. Okay. You really can't. No matter how much policing you have, I don't think it's going to help that situation. Yeah. A rural snake.

Chapter 3: Who was Dana Shailene Fowler?

508.606 - 512.347 James Petrigallo

How far? Depends on how far back we're going. How far are we going?

0

512.387 - 513.128 Jimmy Wissman

We're going to the 70s, maybe.

0

514.435 - 528.567 James Petrigallo

Experience life in 1781 during the American Revolutionary War with live demonstrations of cannon fire, cooking, spinning, camp life, music, and more. Sounds like a 1781-themed joint here.

0

529.127 - 531.749 Jimmy Wissman

That's the wrong Renaissance Fair, man.

0

531.969 - 552.385 James Petrigallo

Yeah, you show up in your flowing shit dressed like a wizard, and they're like... The hell are you doing, boy? What's wrong with you? And then children's activities happening all day, including candle dipping, quill writing, tin punching, tricorn hats. You can't get the kids to stop quill writing. That's the thing.

553.362 - 575.254 James Petrigallo

My kids, the whole growing up, it was just like, well, you stop it with that quill already. Put it down. You know, play a video game or something. Get on fucking social media. Wink asleep in here with all the tin punching. It's constant. The tin punching, Mike. Constant candle dipping. We have enough candles, kids. With your tricorn hats quill-writing all over the place. It's enough, damn it.

575.654 - 580.397 Jimmy Wissman

What's a tricorn hat? I guess it's the corn that has the three different colors in it.

580.417 - 581.277 James Petrigallo

Yeah, they make the hats.

581.317 - 582.578 Jimmy Wissman

How do you make that shit a hat?

Chapter 4: What happened on the night of Dana's murder?

667.625 - 692.541 James Petrigallo

They had a daughter named Ashley right away. And then it fell apart after she gave birth. You know, because they were 19 and had a baby. And that's difficult. It's not an easy thing. Then she met Paul Michael Satterfield. He's known as Mike. Mike Satterfield. He's born in 1962. You know, about five years older. And he, I mean, physically, I don't mean to be shitty to the guy, but...

0

693.706 - 695.147 Jimmy Wissman

Oh, he won. Goddamn.

0

695.347 - 721.685 James Petrigallo

This guy looks like a fucking inflated balloon. Yeah. He's a Peter Griffin. He's a very, very chunky man, let's just say, and not like a hot guy either. You know what I mean? Not like, oh, he's big, but he's a handsome big. He looks like a guy, no matter what he weighed, he wouldn't look very good, and he also has an enormous gut that's hanging over his belly.

0

721.705 - 726.147 Jimmy Wissman

He looks like he's probably. He needs a doctor.

0

726.367 - 726.707 James Petrigallo

Yeah.

726.747 - 728.468 Jimmy Wissman

Somebody needs to tell him some things.

728.688 - 750.976 James Petrigallo

Big time. So they have a son named Brandon, and Mike owns his own HVAC company. So he's doing heating and air conditioning here. Now, this goes on for a while, and their marriage is okay for a few years. And then by 1995, though, they start to have some problems. Okay. Dana, when she was when the kids were very young, she stayed home with the kids and Mike did his business.

751.556 - 771.282 James Petrigallo

And Dana would work, you know, kind of part time here and there to supplement the income. But as the kids got school age, she decided she wanted to do something with herself. So she opened up her own beauty salon. Great. It's a beauty and tanning place that she owns. So she does that by 1995, though. Dana and Mike are separated.

772.054 - 800.4 James Petrigallo

here they're talking about a divorce and they have moved out from each other and it's not going well uh here for them but they're not it's not acrimonious really um and i can i would assume not because on july 30th 1995 this is they're separated they're living apart you know everything like that they spend the night of july 30th together with the children eat dinner watch tv and spend the night together at on july 30th so there's definitely like a

Chapter 5: Who are the suspects in Dana's murder?

850.712 - 850.933 Jimmy Wissman

Okay.

0

851.273 - 855.136 James Petrigallo

So for a divorcing couple, things seem to be going pretty well.

0

855.626 - 856.707 Jimmy Wissman

They're getting along pretty well.

0

856.827 - 879.701 James Petrigallo

They're getting along. So this is July 31st, 1995, and it's down here, and she works a whole day. He goes to work, does his HVAC, and then he has the kids after work, and she has her salon, and she has appointments here. A woman named Patty Taylor arrives at the salon at 6.30 p.m. on July 31st for a hair appointment. Yeah.

0

880.516 - 898.454 James Petrigallo

And after she arrives, another woman named Diane Harris shows up selling products, a cleaning product. So, you know, I'm sure to get die off of shit or something like that and made a demonstration for us. Let me show you what I'm doing. So she said, sure, she's doing this lady's hair. They both watch Diane Harris do a demonstration.

899.094 - 902.618 James Petrigallo

And then Dana ends up purchasing a bottle of the cleaner from this woman.

903.118 - 903.378 Unknown Speaker

Great.

903.879 - 924.936 James Petrigallo

And this woman's like going door to door of all the businesses trying to sell them cleaner. I don't know. So that sounds like a tough job. Yeah. So she Dana continues to work on this Patty Taylor's hair until a little before they kind of she gets there about 630. They're going in with the hair by seven. They're really doing it. She's got to wash it and do all that kind of shit.

925.216 - 947.3 James Petrigallo

And then by eight, they finish up with the hair. So during this time, you know, she's finishing it up and Dana is sweeping and cleaning up the shop, getting ready to close it up for the night. Taylor pays her and Dana walks this Patty Taylor to the door and tells Patty Taylor that I have some clothes in the dryer and I'm going to be right behind you leaving here right now.

Chapter 6: What evidence did the police find?

1139.509 - 1160.646 James Petrigallo

No, a fat man. She likes men, not boys. So Vic got pissed off at the guy. Was like, hey, fuck you. I got a shot with her. They were arguing at the bowling alley. This guy is like laughing, catching his breath. And Vic's like, that's bullshit. I think she'll go out with me. I got a shot. I got as good a shot as anybody.

0

1161.486 - 1167.632 Jimmy Wissman

No, you don't, stupid. Vic, you're so delusional. You don't even see that you've got a really great friend in front of you.

0

1167.672 - 1176.64 James Petrigallo

That's laughing in your face. A good friend laughs in your face when you say dumb shit like that. So then you don't follow through with it because they laughed in your face. You're like, oh.

0

1177.02 - 1179.102 Jimmy Wissman

Trying to save you from embarrassment, man.

0

1179.262 - 1199.663 James Petrigallo

Yes. So that's how it goes. Then he said he hoped that Dana was that I hope she'll say yes to my date. And then he said he starts graphically describing of what he'd like to do to her, including that he would, quote, bend her over her barber chair and perform sexual acts on her. And we can assume which ones he's talking about.

1200.303 - 1200.603 Unknown Speaker

Yeah.

1200.964 - 1218.114 James Petrigallo

He further then went on to state other sexual conduct he would like to have take place with Dana. I love how a court document puts that, by the way. This is what I would like to have take place with Dana. I'd like to have my penis and put it here. Yeah.

1218.895 - 1224.579 Jimmy Wissman

That is hilarious. Get whatever's closest. So this goes on.

1225.479 - 1250.081 James Petrigallo

This goes on for an hour. Wow. Back and forth. And this guy's just never, he never was like, maybe you do have a chance. He's like, you're out of your fucking mind. Yeah, she's hot. I'm sure we'd all like to do that, but give me a break here. So then this guy's work shift ends, and Vic agrees to give his friend a ride home. During the drive, he continues to say, I'm serious, by the way.
