The Octopus Murders with Christian Hansen & Zachary Treitz [Patreon Preview]
Thu, 16 Jan 2025
Zachary Treitz and Christian Hansen, creators of the Netflix series The Octopus Murders, join me to discuss their multi-year investigation into this vast conspiracy and the mysterious deaths surrounding it, including the journalist who was originally uncovering it, Danny Casolaro. I wanted to ask them what it was like to immerse themselves in such a complex mystery and how they managed to stay sane and grounded throughout the process. I also speak with Christian about his own personal paranormal experiences. Chapter 1: What is the background of The Octopus Murders?
Welcome to Otherworld Patreon. I'm your host, Jack Wagner, as usual. This episode you're about to hear is an interview I did quite a few months ago with Zach Treitz and Christian Hansen, the creators of American Conspiracy, The Octopus Murders. The Octopus Murders is a four-part docuseries on Netflix that delves into the mysterious death of investigative writer Danny Casolaro in 1991.
Chapter 2: Who was Danny Casolaro and what did he uncover?
I'm going to do my very best to explain the general premise of the octopus murders and what Danny was researching, but it's extremely complicated, and I suggest you watch the series if you haven't before, although I think this interview will be interesting on its own if you haven't.
Chapter 3: What were the suspicious circumstances surrounding Casolaro's death?
Danny Casolaro was a journalist investigating what he believed was a vast conspiracy he called the octopus, linking government corruption, corporate greed, and covert operations to Central to his theory was the alleged theft of something called Promise software. It was a powerful tracking program, and he believed the US government stole that essentially from its creators.
Chapter 4: How did Christian Hansen get involved with this story?
He believed it was modified for espionage and sold to foreign governments. Casolaro also connected this to other scandals like the Iran-Contra affair and the October surprise theory, uncovering essentially a web of illicit activities spanning the globe that involved U.S. intelligence and many other characters. In 1991, while pursuing these leads, Casolaro was found dead in
in a hotel bathtub under very suspicious circumstances. This was ruled a suicide, although there were missing documents. He also warned people about threats on his life. His family was also very suspicious that this was a suicide. It came to a very, very abrupt and suspicious end.
In this series, Christian and Zach tell Danny's story and retrace his steps while continuing the research and uncovering even more information about the octopus.
What I think is particularly interesting about this series and why I wanted to have them on the show is that while making it over the course of many years, Christian begins to realize that he actually looks quite a lot like Danny Castellaro to the point where while they're out interviewing some of the people involved in this, people that Danny interviewed years ago, they are kind of creeped out by how similar they look.
And he actually looks so much like Danny that he ends up playing Danny in the reenactments that they shot for this series. I thought that was really, really interesting and eerie. Part of the series is about the toll it can take on a person when they're diving very deep into a vast conspiracy, researching something like this, and how you could basically get lost in a maze of sorts very easily.

Chapter 6: What is the significance of the 'octopus' conspiracy?

Chapter 7: How did the series portray the toll of deep investigations?
And he actually looks so much like Danny that he ends up playing Danny in the reenactments that they shot for this series. I thought that was really, really interesting and eerie. Part of the series is about the toll it can take on a person when they're diving very deep into a vast conspiracy, researching something like this, and how you could basically get lost in a maze of sorts very easily.
I really loved how these themes were integrated into the series, and I think there are a lot of direct connections between that and the paranormal. Plus, a mutual friend told me that Christian himself has had some paranormal encounters. So, for many reasons, I wanted to speak to these guys and get them on the show.

So I wake up and I was like, oh, you know, that was a fucking annoying experience to have. And then there's like a woman laying next to me in bed or it's like, I guess it's a woman. It has like long hair and it's like kind of in like a nightgown type thing. And I'm, like, fully up. It's a twin bed, so it's not a big bed. And I'm, like, fully up against the wall. Just, like, what is that?
Like, who is that? Logical explanation is it's either, you know, there's a house full of women that I live in. I have three sisters and a mom. So it's, like, maybe it's my older sister, Greta. Like, she's...
pro she's known to have occasionally bizarre and erratic behavior and who knows what like maybe she's laying next to me in bed and then it's like but then some sort i i sort of like um you know guess who like i i guess i that game you know i i clicked through her physical traits i was like oh no it's not her maybe it's my mom and then i remembered like
very recently up to that point i was climbing down the ladder in the middle of the night to get water and my mom was like at the bottom of the ladder like right by where the bathroom was and she was like um uncle pete died you know and i was like oh like oh no you know and i was like why was she there i'm thinking all this like while i'm like up against the wall like why was like
maybe like somebody else died and like, maybe she was on her way up to wake me up and tell me that uncle Pete died or like, you know, I don't know. Like, but cause I caught her at the bottom. So maybe she came up and then she didn't want to wake me up and then she just fell asleep. But then I was like, It's not her. It's actually not my mom or my sister. It's somebody else.
Maybe it's, like, a ghost, you know, or something. There's a lot of conscious thoughts taking place.
I don't fully understand the latter part, but it's, like, a lot of— Yeah, I'm just—yeah, sorry.
Your brain is awake. Like, your brain's, like— Yeah, I'm, like—I'm, like—I feel awake, and I'm, like, awake. And then—so then I lunge. There's, like, a light, like, with a— One of those like black little like twisty to turn it on thing. And it was already kind of like you had to perfectly twist it to make the light, you know, turn on, right?
