Chapter 1: What predictions does Brittany have for 2025?

2.892 - 12.368 Brittany Luce

Hello, hello. I'm Brittany Luce, and you're listening to It's Been a Minute from NPR, a show about what's going on in culture and why it doesn't happen by accident.

0

18.766 - 21.388 Bobby Allen

Three, two, one, three, two, one. Peter Piper, Peter Piper. Okay.

0

21.408 - 22.048 Brittany Luce

Check, check, check.

0

22.108 - 22.969 Bobby Allen

Okay. Can you guys hear me?

0

23.369 - 48.48 Brittany Luce

Yes. This week, we are connecting the dots between influencers, the Supreme Court, and the politics of making America healthy again. I know, I know. How are all of these things connected? Well, we're going to find out with NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben. She covers politics. And NPR's Bobby Allen. He covers tech. Bobby, Danielle, welcome back to It's Been a Minute.

49.24 - 49.921 Bobby Allen

Thanks for having me.

50.261 - 65.207 Brittany Luce

I'm always happy to be here. This is great. Okay, so... 2024 is out. 2025 is in. Please tell me, for each of you personally, what is in and what is out for 2025?

65.647 - 69.269 Danielle Kurtzleben

Oh, you mean like in our personal lives? For you. Yeah, for you. Oh.

70.149 - 71.27 Bobby Allen

Oh, okay.

Chapter 2: Why is social media considered 'out' for 2025?

79.62 - 101.873 Bobby Allen

My in for 2025 is going to record stores more. And it's actually related to my out for 2025, which is not using Spotify at all. I just want human recommendations. I'm sick of what some people call machine drift, right? Letting the machine tell you what to listen to. And I want an actual human being who knows what they're talking about and has a pulse and goes to shows.

0

102.529 - 129.998 Brittany Luce

Okay, well, you heard it here first. Danielle and Bobby are saying it's time to go back to the movies and back to human recommendations for our music. And you know what? I gotta say, I agree. Now, here's what I think is in and out in 2025. Social media as we know it is out and politicizing food is in. I know I'm making some big claims, so let's take them one by one.

0

131.966 - 154.905 Brittany Luce

Starting with social media being out. It's not like people won't be using it, but what it means to us and how we think of it culturally continues to shift. You know, there's a little ways, like how influencers aren't influencing like they used to. But there's also the big ways, like in a couple of weeks, we aren't sure if TikTok is even going to be allowed to operate in this country.

0

155.652 - 176.125 Brittany Luce

All signs are pointing towards 2025 being the year that social media is less a place where we're finding out about what's happening in the world and more a place where we gather to solidify our identities. Are you feeling what I'm saying? So Bobby, I got a question. Is the social platform TikTok in or out?

0

176.185 - 195.916 Brittany Luce

Because right now, a law Biden signed is set to shut down the app right before President-elect Trump's inauguration in a few weeks. But just last week, Trump asked for the court to pause the shutdown so he could try and broker a sale of the app to an American company. Bobby, is TikTok in or out for 2025?

197.31 - 204.494 Bobby Allen

Well, TikTok right now is on the fence of in and out and nobody knows for sure. So really hard to say.

205.075 - 222.365 Bobby Allen

But yeah, in a few weeks, I will be going to Washington and watching the Supreme Court arguments between lawyers for TikTok and the Department of Justice over whether this law you just mentioned, whether that is going to stand as the law of the land, meaning TikTok will have to be shut down or if it will be overturned.

222.765 - 242.094 Bobby Allen

But right, throwing a huge wrench into this, of course, was President-elect Donald Trump writing that, hey, Supreme Court, why don't you like hold off on the whole ruling thing? Because I'm Donald Trump and I'm about to be president and I think I could broker a deal. So why don't you guys just chill for a minute? Hmm. Inside TikTok, they're sort of quietly celebrating.

242.114 - 258.106 Bobby Allen

They don't want to make too much noise about this. But when you talk to folks who are pretty high up at the company, they see this amicus brief from Trump basically saying he's going to rescue TikTok as their get out of jail free card. I mean, they think regardless of what the court does, Trump is going to find a solution.

Chapter 3: What role will food play in political identity?

713.34 - 713.56 Brittany Luce

Yes.

0

713.7 - 720.006 Bobby Allen

I have so many questions, but I feel like it would take a whole other episode to get to the bottom of it. So I'll just take you at your word. Got it. Raw milkmaid dress.

0

720.787 - 736.1 Danielle Kurtzleben

That's sort of the one end of the spectrum that's like, you know, dressing for traditional female standards for the heterosexual male gaze, all of that. And then at the other end of the spectrum, you have, you know, guys like if you are not aware of raw egg nationalists, go look this man up.

0

736.36 - 737.981 Brittany Luce

I just learned about him recently.

0

738.081 - 757.869 Danielle Kurtzleben

The name says it all. Yeah. Like someone who talks about food and politics in a way that very much overlaps and brings in some conspiracy theories, but is very much about, you know, men being strong and having high testosterone and bodybuilding and all of that. And so these two sort of visions of manhood and womanhood go hand in hand, all of which is to say.

758.874 - 776.281 Danielle Kurtzleben

I think the politicization of food and the genderification of food, if that is a word, I think is going to continue this year. And the one thing I would add to end my tirade here is that what I'm going to be watching for in food politics this year is how much the ends of the political horseshoe overlap. Right.

776.341 - 802.413 Danielle Kurtzleben

Because for a long time there was this sort of stereotype, but rooted in a certain amount of truth, of far lefty granola types, hippies. Yeah. Moosewood, cookbook. Yes. Being anti-vaxxers and not trusting the system, man. You know, and then at the other end of the spectrum now you have. a lot of right-wing anti-vaxxers, maybe for different reasons.

802.473 - 828.495 Danielle Kurtzleben

You know, a lot of that distrust built especially because of COVID. People like RFK at the end of that spectrum. But you can see how certain things that RFK Jr. believes are things that Some on the left would believe, for example, RFK is very skeptical slash inimical towards Monsanto. Well, there's a lot of anti-corporate, anti-Monsanto folks on the left as well. So if and when RFK Jr.

828.635 - 846.608 Danielle Kurtzleben

is put before the Senate for confirmation for HHS, as Trump has nominated him for, I think we're really going to see possibly some really strange bedfellows in terms of who supports him, who doesn't support him, who backs him. certain ideas of his and who doesn't.

Chapter 4: How is TikTok's future being affected by political actions?

1028.05 - 1033.372 Danielle Kurtzleben

Bobby goes to Berghain regularly. Oh, right. I was going to say. He's on the list.

0

1033.592 - 1036.654 Bobby Allen

I actually was there two months ago, Dani. I'll talk about it offline.

0

1038.183 - 1040.705 Brittany Luce

Wait, what about you, Danielle? Is the club in or out?

0

1040.946 - 1052.076 Danielle Kurtzleben

I have been to a club in my life. I can count it on one hand the number of times. I'm not an informed opinion. I'm going to say sure. Who doesn't like dancing?

0

1052.256 - 1055.038 Brittany Luce

Maybe Resolution hit the club more in 2025? No. No. Look.

1060.569 - 1066.193 Danielle Kurtzleben

I am 42. I know who I am, and I know who I'm not, and I'm not a club lady.

1066.253 - 1070.176 Brittany Luce

You're not a 365 party girl, and that is just fine.

1070.297 - 1072.398 Danielle Kurtzleben

I am 365 party. It's just I don't do it at the club.

1072.418 - 1092.552 Brittany Luce

Okay. I like that 365 house party. Yes. Yeah. There we go. I love that. I love that. All righty. Well, our next In-N-Out for 2025. They made a comeback, but have they already crested? In 2025, wide leg pants. Are they in or out?

Chapter 5: What trends are emerging in social media platforms?

1145.964 - 1156.037 Danielle Kurtzleben

What our professional responsibility was to not answer because then we're not taking a side, for example, when our funding is up before Congress. I don't know. Well, I'll say this. Yes.

0

1156.838 - 1162.525 Brittany Luce

I am contractually obligated to record asking people directly to donate.

0

1162.605 - 1164.828 Danielle Kurtzleben

That's true. All right. Everybody go donate. Yes.

0

1166.277 - 1183.104 Brittany Luce

Congress, I take no opinion. I definitely think it's in for 2025. Yeah. We love to hear it. You can, of course, donate to your local NPR station by going to donate.npr.org. And Bobby, Danielle, thank you so much for doomsday prepping 2025 with me. I really appreciate both of you.

0
