The 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the centre of the country in the early afternoon. The epicentre was in Sergai, close to Myanmar's second largest city, Mandalay, where a historic pagoda collapsed.

The conference had been mandated by the United Nations General Assembly and it was due to take place on Friday with a key focus on forced displacement. Israel had said it would not attend, describing the event as legal warfare.
