The Briefing with Jen Psaki

Signal & Noise: Trump Talks Third Term Amid Texting Scandal

Tue, 1 Apr 2025

Description

Jen Psaki breaks down the calculation behind Donald Trump’s recent talk of an unconstitutional third term, which is just one of the many shiny objects he’s dangled before the press corps to distract from the scandal of Signalgate. Congressman Dan Goldman joins Jen to discuss why Trump’s musings about holding onto the White House beyond 2028 warrant our attention. Later Representative Jason Crow, a veteran and outspoken critic of Mike Waltz and Pete Hegseth’s careless security breach puts our military in jeopardy. Jen also examines the elections in Wisconsin and Florida, focusing on what could be a seismic shift in voter sentiment in one House district in the Sunshine State, where Josh Weil is polling even with MAGA State Senator Randy Fine. Weil joins Jen to talk about his campaign in a race that’s become a referendum on Donald Trump.  Check out our social pages below:https://twitter.com/InsideWithPsakihttps://www.instagram.com/InsideWithPsaki/https://www.tiktok.com/@insidewithpsakihttps://www.msnbc.com/jen-psakihttps://bsky.app/profile/insidewithpsaki.msnbc.com

How serious is the Signal texting scandal?

2261.799 - 2278.196 Jen Psaki

Special elections are always kind of mind games because you never know how many people are going to turn out. There have been some polls that have shown you up by three points, which is mind blowing because Trump won the district by 30 in November. People like Steve Bannon are saying you're going to win. That could be mind games, too.

Do you believe the polls that you're ahead as you're going into tomorrow?

We've done the breakdown. My background is a math teacher. I've taught statistics and data in high school. We've de-aggregated some of the data from these polls and looked at it. It's pretty much in alignment with what we have internally. We feel really confident about this race. There's been tremendous support. People need someone to represent them in Congress right now.

For the last two months, this district has had no representation in Congress, while essential government services that they rely on, Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, and Veterans Benefits, have all been put in jeopardy. And, you know, Randy Fine refuses to even say that he will serve or work for them.

He's committed to serving and working for one person only, and that guy doesn't live in District 6.

2334.232 - 2348.585 Jen Psaki

You're a math teacher. I love that. There could be some math teachers in Congress here. They have trouble with some counting at times about deficits and such things caused by tax cuts. That aside, how has being a teacher informed your decision to run for office?

2350.99 - 2365.744 Host

Well, I've been a public school teacher for 13 years, primarily working in Title I schools. In public schools, we don't pick and choose which kids we serve. We serve every kid, every family, every day. And that's what I believe we should all expect from our representatives.

2366.465 - 2388.074 Host

The fact, as your previous guest mentioned, that people have lost faith in their representatives or failed to see the difference in some of them is deeply disheartening. And I think the fact that I've had a life prior to running for this office committed to public service is something that's resonated with voters, regardless of party affiliation in this district.

2389.178 - 2404.776 Jen Psaki

Joshua, it's not easy to put yourself out there. It's not easy to raise money. I'm sure all of the students you've taught over the last 13 years and everybody in your community is so proud of you. Tomorrow's a big day. I hope you get some sleep. I really appreciate you taking the time to join me tonight. Thank you so much.
