Chapter 1: What is the main topic of this episode?
On today's episode of That Was Us, we will be discussing Season 3, Episode 1, Nine Bucks. Kate, Kevin, and Randall celebrate their 38th birthdays while each facing their own personal challenges. Plus, we flashback to the very beginning to see how Jack and Rebecca met and what their memorable first date was like.
Yo. Hello. What's going on, gang? What's happening? It's good to see you guys.
It's always good to see you.
It's been a real pleasure.
I just finished the entire first season of Paradise. Did you?
I'm behind. I'm behind.
It's all good. Non-stop, baby. Thank you very much. I texted you. I texted Dan. I think I texted pretty much everybody. Yasu. Everyone involved. I was like, you're all giving me classic you. Oh. While giving me something completely new.
I loved it. It was great. Thank you guys very much. We're about to start shooting season two. We've actually started shooting season two right now. So it's off to the races. And I think season two will be just as good as season one.
Amazing.

Chapter 2: How do the characters celebrate their 38th birthdays?
Nothing. Just, you know, momming and hanging out.
Yeah.
Same old, same old.
At the time of the recording of these podcasts, it is Aries Nation going on. SKB is one step closer to a half century. 49 years.
Yeah, you just had your birthday. Happy belated.
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. Mandy Moore will have her birthday in three days time. Is that correct?
41.
Let's go. How do you feel? You're into the 40s now. I love it. You love it?
Yes. Better than the 30s? Oh, yeah.

Chapter 3: What do we learn about Jack and Rebecca's first date?
His name is Franco Harris.
Franco Harris. That's right.
That's right. Thank you.
The most important part, right? The most important detail. And this is the night of something they called the Immaculate Reception. That is absolutely... Come on, Mandy Moore! I'm talking too much. I'm talking too much.
No, it's great. The show, if the show is a pendulum that swings, right, between the past and the present, this is like a clear delineation that the pendulum is starting to swing further into the future and further into the past. And the show like widens its scope to obviously when you guys first meet. And then as we get a few episodes in, we see even back into your high school days.
But I love that Dan and our writers are able to weave in the sort of historical context for a family like the Pearsons who love football, football's their life, the Super Bowl, like all of that is sort of woven into the fabric of the family. And sort of being able to draw upon this other part of the Steelers history, Pittsburgh, like all of that, that makes sense for the family.
Again, like you said, widening the swing of this pendulum. Yeah. It's so fascinating, and I feel like it's only setting us up and the audience up for more of that to come as the show continues on. Right.
Should we start there in the flashback? Sure. And walk through that?
Yeah, let's do it.

Chapter 4: How does the episode connect to Franco Harris and the Immaculate Reception?
Chapter 5: What are the significant changes in Season 3 of This Is Us?
And as we all know too well, mother figures can come in many ways.
That's where Quince comes in. Their stuff is high quality, feels super thoughtful, and it's actually affordable. Now, I don't overthink it. I just go straight to Quince.
They have cashmere sweaters starting at $50, 14-carat gold jewelry, Italian leather bags, fragrances, so many amazing options. All Quinn's items are priced 50% to 80% less than similar luxury brands. No markups, no middlemen. Just really well-made pieces at prices that make sense.
They work directly with top factories using safe, ethical, and responsible manufacturing practices. And they only use premium fabrics and finishes. That kind of transparency? We love to see it.
I bought a ton of new stuff for this rental house that we're staying in right now. I had to buy new sheets and towels and all kinds of things. And I have to tell you, Quinn's makes the very best I've ever had.
I have to admit, my entire life seems like it's Quinn's now. I've got home goods. I give it sheets, linens, towels. The other day we did a podcast and I was in a full outfit, head to toe. In Quince, a nice gold chain, a knit cap, a wonderful sweater, comfy pants. I mean, I am Quince kind of through and through now.

Chapter 6: How does Jack's relationship with Rebecca evolve during the date?
Yes, yes, yes.
Tempura batter.
There you go.
I know the fry.
That's my favorite too, Ryan.
That's my favorite. So what I'm noticing at this date... It was like they give a big bowl of fries for the date so that you can kind of share it with each other. And I'm eating my sandwich and if I grab a fry, she'll grab a fry. And she's very particular about which fries she wants. You see her looking through the thing. Looking. And this woman, I was like, oh, she's going to eat all the fries.
Yeah. So I was like, I have to get in there. And so the small but subtle tug of war over like- The good fries. Oh yeah. I was like, let me get the fry. And she's like, oh yeah. We're talking about middle potato.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not the end.
Not the butt of the potato. The whole time we're talking to each other, but there's also like, you ain't gonna eat more fries than me on this show.

Chapter 7: What themes of family are explored in this episode?
Chapter 8: What insights do the actors share about their characters?
We dippin'? We dippin' fries. We dippin'. What do we dip?
There's some... I'm trying to think of what... Special sauce? Barbecue sauce at Armadillo Willie's. These days, though, I like a good aioli. I've been converted with the European. Ketchup is passe. I'm all about the mayonnaise. I'm serious.
Okay.
But Heinz, if you're listening... Listen, if you want to... Heinz makes mayo, too.
That's right. Come on now. This episode is brought to you by Heinz 57 Mayonnaise.
What about you, Tay?
