Chapter 1: Who is the storyteller of this episode?
Welcome to Otherworld. I'm your host, Jack Wagner. This story comes from a man named Brian who grew up in Michigan. And in high school, Brian was in bands. He spent his time going to shows, getting into trouble. Honestly, very similar to my teenage years. In fact... I realized after this interview that I had actually seen Brian's band play a couple times at shows when I was much younger.
Back at this time, Brian and his friends used to go out and explore abandoned buildings for fun. And on one night in particular, they decide to go into a supposedly haunted house. He believes that when they entered that home, it changed the course of events for the lives of him and his friends. I thought this was such an eerie story.
It's also a good example of the paranormal and real-life issues being completely intertwined. I will let Brian tell you the rest. This episode is called Fike House, and you're listening to Otherworld. Hello? Is this Bobby? Yes, it is. At its core, the science you can't argue with. A story about all of a sudden up in the sky.
It's almost frustrating that it's happening. I'm going to die. His limbs were just like wrong.
Everybody moves back into the light, even if it takes them a minute.
My name's Brian. I live in Milwaukee. I work at an art school. I'm the director of safety. And I've lived here for like 23 years. I was always super, super scared of paranormal stuff. I saw The Exorcist at a really young age. And I remember for like a year just being completely, completely afraid of like becoming possessed.
This all took place probably like my senior year of high school and the year after. So that would have been like 1998, 1999. It really started with meeting my best friend, Colin, who he was a year older than me in high school. And we were like the only like alternative kids in my school. We grew up out in the country. It was like really, really rural. My graduating class was like 60 people.
And it was a lot of like kids. you know, Garth Brooks and like, you know, the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves soundtrack and stuff like that. That's like what people listen to. And we were just not into that stuff. We just like causing trouble and stuff. You know, we were like class clowns. So that's how we kind of started hanging out was just, yeah, messing with people, messing with teachers.
We had a librarian that we really liked to get a rise out of, Mr. Jesperson. Yeah, we just did like lots of really stupid stuff. So Colin was a sophomore. I was a freshman and his girlfriend had just graduated, I think. So she was like out of high school by then.

Chapter 2: Why did Brian and his friends explore abandoned houses?
cory and lucas going through the house i want to even say they were on the floor above me and you could just hear their voices and i was just like i'm just gonna stay here when they come down i'm gonna leave with them through the same way i came in and um you know i i don't really remember where colin was at that time or jason um but
I think I actually got scared enough that I tried to get out before everybody else left. At some point, I was getting out of the house, crawling through the basement window, and I heard Lucas mentioning that he had found some roller skates. I want to say that Lucas was the last one out. Lucas or Corey was the last out. And Corey was like talking about this sheet.
It was like a sheet or a curtain that he had found too. And I remember being, we kind of dismissed that. We were like, why would you take Lucas?
curtain or a sheet like it just didn't make any sense to me the roller skate thing was kind of cool Lucas was really really excited about it and and none of us it was like we were out of the house so I felt just relief I was kind of like you know I had accomplished something it was like that was done I was over it I made it out I I was kind of like manically happy
I remember still like my heart was still racing kind of. I was definitely smoking a cigarette and was just relieved to be out of that house. I remember Lucas coming out of the house and he had the roller skates in his hand and he was just like, look at these. And there was a pretty good group of us there, but I don't think everybody went inside. There were definitely two cars there.
Like I said, I think I drove, but I think, like, you know, there were a couple girls that were outside, too, and we were all just hanging out and probably talking about, like, how cool it was and, you know, Lucas talking about the roller skates and stuff.
I just remember he had this, like, he had this way of talking and, like, he was always, like, talking through a kind of, like, a sinister smile a little bit. He was harmless, but he was just kind of like... There's just something about Lucas that was like... It's like parents loved him for some reason.
He was like a good-looking kid, but he just always had this kind of like comic book villain quality to him that was as scary as it was charming, I guess. But yeah, he was just really, really into these roller skates. They were kids' roller skates. And I want to even say they said Sears and Roebuck on them, but I'm not sure about that. It was like a department store brand.
They were just like metal with straps, like the kind that a kid would strap onto their shoes. And they were like... You know, it was just like a metal, like a bottom plate kind of thing with like two leather straps. I want to say like buckles. But they were definitely small. I remember, you know, we were kind of like, what are you going to do with those? And he's just like, I don't know.
