Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
When I hear Samantha's name, I'm reminded of her contagious laugh.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
So he pulled into the parking lot. As I walked up, I did realize we might be dealing with a kidnapping suspect. So I kind of paused and looked through the window to see if I could see his hands.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
It makes the hair on the back of your head rise. At the time, I probably had 23, 24 years on, and I can't remember if I'd ever seen an Alaska driver's license. His name, Israel Keys. It's just crazy. You know, it's, like, hard to hold your composure. The Ranger and the FBI were both there pretty quickly, and then they took over.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
This is one of the worst details of all. That someone raped and murdered a teenage girl in his shed, at his home, and when he's done, goes back inside to his live-in girlfriend and small daughter, and hours later takes them on a cruise. Pure evil.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
The proof of life photo to me is one of the most harrowing and indicative pieces of just how sadistic this guy was. He made her up. He braided her hair to take that photo. This tells you this is not just any killer.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
You don't want to lay all your cards on the table, and in fact, we didn't have many cards to put on the table.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
He's fielding phone calls from his daughter's school. He's got parent-teacher conferences missing. I mean, think about the compartmentalization of a psychopath like this.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
We're looking for a guy driving a white Ford Polka from Alaska. Okay. And so it's kind of a coincidence that your driver's license says you're from Alaska. I told you I was from Alaska. Right. I know. Hey. We're looking for a guy that's committed a pretty serious crime. We don't know if you're the guy or not.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
When I first got there, I was struck by the fact that the phone line junction box on the side of the garage had a cut wire. Within the garage, there was a doorway to the house and the window was shattered. Some of the broken glass was in the garage. The majority of it was inside the house. We have, at this point, clear signs of forced entry.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
There was no signs of blood. There was no signs of a struggle.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
There was medications for Bill and Lorraine that were still present in the house.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
We did DNA swabs within the car. Common areas, gear shifters, things like that, that people would have to touch to operate the vehicle. We take samples from all those areas. The lab was able to discern a mix of DNA from the steering wheel. One of the sample DNA profiles was not either Bill or Lorraine Currier. We have a third party, somebody else that was in that car other than Bill and Lorraine.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
Unfortunately, the result from testing this unknown sample was we didn't come up with a match.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
Certainly in a case where you don't have any clear avenues or suspects or persons of interest that you're pursuing, you're constantly thinking about, what have we missed? What other avenues are there? What have I not thought about? Where should we go next?
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
Any abandoned buildings, any fishing access, any riverbanks. But within that area of Essex and its surrounding communities, It's a huge, huge area.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
I don't need a search warrant to search the vehicle under the vehicle exception rule in Texas state law.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
The ranger saw a pair of white tennis shoes in the passenger side of the car.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
Here you go. Hey. Gray hoodie with glasses in the pocket.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
The white Ford Focus is two vehicles in front of me. It accelerated rapidly, faster than everyone else. So I said, well, hang on a minute, he might be speeding. And so, sure enough, checked him with radar. He was running 58, not 55. I activate the lights. He pulls into a local restaurant. You're excited that you found the vehicle that you were looking for.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
He's not on our radar screen at all. It's like, who is this guy? I sent our officers to Keyes' residence immediately to see if Samantha was being held inside the house or being held captive there.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
And that's the first question. Is Samantha there? She could be tied up in the basement and they don't know.
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
So they've got the guy, but they don't have Samantha. She's not in the car in Texas. She's not in the house in Anchorage. So where is she?
20/20
Wild Crime: You've Got Your Monster | S4 Ep. 2
But still, in my mind, the odds of us getting the correct white Ford Focus were astronomical to me.

True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
He told me on more than one occasion that his survival is more important than hers, that he was a lot more important than her.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
And I asked her, are you sure you want to do this? And she said, I have no other choice. He's going to take my baby from me. She was worried about him taking full custody of the girl.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
Leon kept using the word disappear, or he would say, I want her gone. I want her to go away forever. And I took that to understand that he wanted her dead.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
I began to tell Valerie and Leon that Mac was gone, that it was done. I then asked Leon if he wanted to see a picture, and he told me that he did not want to see anything.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
I know you have concerns about the body and everything. We'll take care of the body.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
I'm afraid we have some bad news. What's bad? Your ex-husband's been found. It looks like it turns out to be a fatality. Looks like money from robbery gone wrong. Sorry to have to tell you. Have you heard from him recently?
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
All right, so I'll tell you, we'll need you to come with us and... Oh, so I guess I'll stay here. Okay, well, right now we're going to read you your rights. Me? Because both of you have been arrested for solicitation capital murder. Why? For solicitation murder.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
Once I'm involved in the murder plot, then we are able to control the situation.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
Upon hearing that, I was shocked that Leon wanted two people killed.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
Leon did tell me that he also wanted to have Valerie's ex-husband removed from the picture.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Toxic Love
It was very obvious to me during that first meeting that Leon was serious about killing Megan and Mac.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Shot in the Dark
When I first got there, I started my photographs on the outside of the residence. I walked in, photographed the interior of the residence, photographed the bedroom.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Shot in the Dark
It appeared to be a bullet hole. At that point, I knew that it probably was not a suicide.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
There's no question in my mind that John Juca was one of the individuals culpable in the death of Mark Fisher.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
This was an impromptu party. This was not something that was planned. This was something that just happened.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
He was more of a street kid. He didn't have the support system at home that John Joker and many of Johns other friends had. He's known to be a marijuana dealer.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
I can tell you that our detectives, when they arrived at the scene, they found a male white prone in the street. Obviously the victim of several gunshots. There was some trauma to his face.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
Wenn wir von einem Jungen aus New Jersey hören, sagen wir sofort, was ist hier falsch? Und wie ist diese Person hierher gekommen? Ist hier irgendein Drogendeal schlecht gegangen? Ist hier irgendein domänisches Problem?
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
It was very frustrating because we were unaccustomed to seeing that kind of coordinated cover-up.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
They painted Mark Fischer as, you know, the boy next door that was sort of like a lamb that wandered into the den of wolves.
20/20
True Crime Vault: Undercover Mother
Wir haben mit ihr gearbeitet, als wir dachten, sie sei ein Bulldog.

Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
On March 9th of 2018, Binghamton police received a 911 call from Haley's roommates. Officers respond to the scene. They enter the home. That's where they find Haley lying in bed, unresponsive. And obviously, just given the nature of Haley's age alone is suspicious. 22-year-olds generally just don't die without some related medical condition.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
And here, by all accounts, is just from the visible eyes, is a healthy person who's found deceased lying in bed. It was safe to say that the death was suspicious in nature. I was advised of the situation. I responded to the scene as well as my staff.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
We were advised by my lieutenant at the time that they had a death investigation pending. Unusual circumstances, so to speak. They said that they were drafting a search warrant for the residence. So my partner, Jess Griffin, and I went to the scene. Obviously, we can't go inside the residence until the search warrant is completed and signed. So we were waiting for that to happen.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
The area around 23 Oak Street, it's residential, multifamily homes, along with single-family homes, known for Binghamton University students. Where Haley and her friends lived, it was around the corner.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
The apartment where Haley was located was not Haley's apartment. It was rented by several other Binghamton University students, Orlando Trucero being one of them.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
through talking to Haley's roommates. It was learned that Orlando, I don't know if you could say that they were boyfriend and girlfriend, but they had an on-again, off-again relationship. And where Haley was located was Orlando Tercero's bedroom. We have to know why Haley has been found deceased in his bed and why he is not around.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
Once the search warrant was signed, then we started moving our way inside. As we moved into the dining room, we noticed that the bookshelf was askew. Screwed into the entryway, it's like a wood frame structure, were three eyelets, three metal eye hooks. And through those was a necktie. And not too far into the kitchen, a little bit, there was a chair that was askew as well.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
My detectives see that as evidence of a suicide attempt, failed suicide attempt.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
We also noticed some gauze packaging on the kitchen counter. In the garbage can also were more gauze paper towels with obvious bloodstaining. So that was another indication that someone hurt themselves and tried to clean themselves up a little bit. We did go into the bedroom where Haley was located.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
She was found in the bed. almost in a sitting position, I guess you could say.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
No wounds, but we did see some bruising around her neck. And as you got in closer, you could actually see a particular hemorrhages in her face. So we assumed it was manual strangulation.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
They did find a note, a handwritten note. It was in Spanish. The note translated, I'm really sorry about this. I never felt I could be capable of doing this, Father. I'll see you soon. I'm sorry this is stupid. I'm sorry. At that point, I am fairly confident that we have a homicide investigation. Orlando's our person of interest. We have to find him, we have to talk to him.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
And members of the Binghamton police were in contact with Haley's family to let them know.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
Throughout this process, the investigation, we had a lot of people that wanted to cooperate and offer information. So there was a lot of interviews that were conducted of associates of Haley and Orlando. The information that came forward was that Orlando was obsessed with Haley and jealous if she was with other people. We picked up information of Haley's car tires getting slashed.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
At this point, crime scene detectives, they complete their processing of the scene. An autopsy is scheduled through a forensic pathologist the following day. Haley's death is ruled a homicide by manual strangulation.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
My focus was, my staff's focus was, we gotta find Orlando. We have information Orlando's sister had originally contacted Binghamton University Police the morning of March 9th to say that she had received an alarming text message from her brother Orlando. And this is before. Haley has been found deceased.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
In that message, he had made statements that he was a failure, that he left his car at JFK Airport. And Binghamton University Police contacted us. I reach out to some law enforcement partners at that point, specifically the local FBI agent, to say, can you check to see if he has boarded a plane? And I was notified that Orlando had boarded a flight to Nicaragua.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
And Orlando was no longer in the United States. We've had suspects flee on us before, whether it be to New York City or Florida. In my 24 years, this is the first time that I've ever dealt with a case where we've had a suspect flee the country.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
Flight is, in my mind, in my experience, is a pretty clear sign of guilt.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
Orlando fled the United States, but we had to still move forward. At that point, I was confident he's the guy that we want, but now my staff had to collect the evidence to prove that he's the guy that we wanted.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
We retrieved video from the residence at 23 Oak Street, and basically we're going to track every move that we can, whether through video, credit cards, whatever we can do to kind of follow Orlando's movements. Upon reviewing the video from 23 Oak Street, Orlando was seen leaving his residence at 23 Oak Street around 2.30 in the morning.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
on the 8th, he returns at around 3.30 in the morning with Hallie. They're seen on video walking in together. The one thing that's important to note that after that 3.30 timestamp on the 8th, Hallie's never seen again. She's seen walking in, but she's never seen leaving the residence. Orlando, on the other hand, is seen numerous times coming and going from the home. At around
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
say 8.30 at night on the 8th, he's clearly packing his car with luggage and goes. That night, Haley is due to meet her friends at a poetry reading, and she never arrives to meet them.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
again putting those pieces of the puzzle together it's reaffirming kind of what we knew but what greater power is than the video evidence of two people walking in and only one person walks out we actually sent guys down to jfk airport port authority police brought us over to the terminal
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
They were able to pick him up actually walking in to the terminal on security cameras. And immediately you saw the head bandage around his head. Pretty telltale because that kind of just confirmed what we thought from the scene about a possible attempted suicide. They were able to track him throughout the airport from the time he got there till the time he boarded the plane.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
The death of Haley, that garnered national attention.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
It was a high-profile case. So the Nicaraguan authorities, they located Orlando in Nicaragua, and they arrested him. 22-year-old Orlando Tercero was arrested in Nicaragua.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
From there, it then becomes how to handle what turned into be an international incident.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
He would be prosecuted in Nicaragua for the crime of femicide.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 2: Haley Anderson
Members of my staff were called upon to testify and present testimony and or physical evidence that was recovered during the investigation.
20/20
Bad Romance: Barefoot Witness
I have a child. How old are you, sweetheart? Three. She's three years old. She's in the parking lot standing here by herself with a pillow. No one's around. Can't find anyone. I need an officer.
20/20
Bad Romance: Barefoot Witness
The woman's keys and her purse are in the car. OK. It looks like one of the other pillows are in the car.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 5: Patrick Moffly
I'm on scene at Smith Street. You can go ahead and put me as a primary officer.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 5: Patrick Moffly
Authorities haven't identified a suspect or a motive. We'll continue to update you on this investigation as new details come into the newsroom.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 5: Patrick Moffly
Hey, Sarge, we got evidence on the floor here, too. I got a bunch of little white pills. I don't know what they are. It kind of looks like Xanax.
20/20
Death in the Dorms Season 2: Episode 5: Patrick Moffly
Authorities haven't identified a suspect or a motive.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
You don't just look at suspects in a murder case. You also look at the victims. By 2008, Detective Malabon and his partner are digging deeper into Angel's past, and they find the ties to Wicca.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Detective Malbin knows that the whole case is riding on the letters. prove who sent them, and they have their killer.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Who is he? Hoshaw has a job doing electrical work for a Virginia company with U.S. Navy contracts. Detectives learn he tells Angel he's been placed on a project in the Midwest. Most of the time, he'll be living up there and commuting back to Norfolk.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
It's about 1.30 in the morning. I'm patrolling the East Ocean View area when I got the call from dispatch to respond to Fryden Street.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
When Angelique Guyana meets her true love online, there's a lot he isn't telling her, like he's been married three times.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
As I'm approaching the steps, I can see that the interior front door is open and I can also see that there's a light on inside the residence.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
This woman has been stabbed multiple times, and her throat has been slit.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
I immediately drew my weapon, walked in, Asked the elderly female, is there anybody else in the residence? She said, my daughter is in the bedroom. My main concern was, is the person that did this still in the residence? Took a couple of steps towards the bedroom, walking down the hall.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Now they've got a string of receipts and cell phone records that all connect David to the letters. The problem with that is that doesn't go into court and prove anything. It is always a lot more powerful when you have an eyewitness. So Detective Malbin and his partner go on a road trip, talking to store owners and vendors. We ended up with 23 to 25 different people subpoenaed in this case.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
They present their case to the grand jury and get an indictment and an arrest warrant for David Hoshaw.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
She was clearly deceased, covered in blood, laying naked, face down on the floor.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
A demonstration like that is so effective with the jury. It shows the level of violence of what they call overkill.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
The death penalty is on the table, and facing all of that, Hoshaw surprises them all.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
His past is horrific. He preys on those that are insecure and people he perceives as being weak. A group of women who just want to be loved.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Now normally somebody has the right to confront their accuser in court. This is the exception to that. The accuser is actually dead. So with their last breath, it's presumed to be the truth. A dying declaration can be used in court, but there is one rule.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Nothing is stolen, and there is no murder weapon. All the DNA and fingerprints belong to Vonda, Angel, her live-in fiance, David, and other family members.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
The detectives find that on the night of the murder, Walter was more than 200 miles away. His alibi checks out, so they have to cross Walter Lucas off the list. If there is no break-in, the next question police ask is who could get into the house. Everyone who has a key, family, David the fiance, all have alibis too.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
within a development that most murder investigations never see. A letter from the killer, and it's postmarked in Chicago.
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
How would the writer know all of this unless they knew the women, unless they were actually there?
20/20
Bad Romance: Betrayed
Taunting the police is not a smart move. It tends to make them even more determined.

'Radioactive' - Ep. 4: The Investigators
We checked to try to find where it was. We could not locate it in either Crescent, Edmond, or Oklahoma City.
20/20
'Radioactive' - Ep. 4: The Investigators
We should have kept the car in our custody, but that's strictly in hindsight.
20/20
'Radioactive' - Ep. 4: The Investigators
Yes, but from the standpoint, if two parties have scrapings, surely one of them is going to give us the information or at least release the information to the press at some point on what they found.
20/20
'Radioactive' - Ep. 4: The Investigators
Well, at this point in time, I'm not really sure. Two months hence, what good...

Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne Schultz explained to the police that she had been having an affair with Mark Wenger prior to the murder of Donna Wenger.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne Schultz also stated that prior to the murders, Mark made a number of incriminating statements.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne stated that she declined to participate in that. After Mark learned about the trip that Donna took with Roger Harrington, he told Deanne, I've got to get that driver in my house.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne Schultz, after the murders, her life went on a downward spiral to the point to where she had engaged in multiple suicide attempts.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
She never came forward until that chance encounter at that local hospital.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
That was a catalyst that caused her for the first time to reach out to someone other than her physician to discuss the case. Now the police were able to look at that case through an entirely different perspective. Through the eyes of a man who was unhappy in his marriage, now we have a motive. The first step when you reopen a closed case is to go back and look at what you already have.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
There was no signs of forced entry. Not only that, but Roger Harrington left what was clearly could be used as weapons inside the vehicle.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
There was a tire iron. They also found a knife inside of his vehicle.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Mark Wenger wanted to kill his wife, and then opportunity presented when Roger Harrington drove Donna Wenger, and he told Deanne that he needed to get that man into his house, and that's exactly what he did.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Mark Winger had stated that Roger Harrington was kneeling down right next to Donna Winger's head and he was beating her with a hammer. He stated that he shot him and that the man fell backwards so that his feet remained near Donna's head. In reality, the Polaroid photographs show the exact opposite. And as such, there's no way this murder could have happened the way Mark Winger described.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
The physical evidence, along with the fact of the affair, it was clear that this was a staged domestic homicide.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Susan Collins had been briefly spoken to initially, and she had claimed that she was present when Roger Harrington fielded a phone call from someone asking to meet him the day of the murders.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Police found a note inside of the vehicle. It was a bank deposit slip, and on the back was the time of 4.30 PM, the address, and the name Mark Winger. Roger Harrington was not an intruder, but rather he was lured into that home by Mark Winger.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Mr. Winger made some comments about perhaps it would be easier if his wife were dead.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
We were conducting an exhaustive investigation. During that same time frame, Mark Winger was a free man.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
We knew the stakes of this case. This was a big case. And it was one that on the front end, some mistakes had been made. So we knew that on the second go around, we had to have it right.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
The moment he was indicted, we moved from the investigative phase into the next chapter, which was prosecution.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
It's our belief that Roger comes to the house, he is allowed into the home, and there was no signs of forced entry. And he was executed at that time. Hearing the gunshot, Donna Winger then comes from the bedroom to investigate. He then beats his wife to death with a hammer. Mark then calls 911.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
In the 911 call, you can actually hear Roger Harrington moaning in the background.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
He had already said that he had shot the man and there was a bullet in his head. When police arrive, there's two bullets in his head.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne Schultz's testimony was able to demonstrate that in reality, Mark was obviously unhappy, was unfaithful, and who had specifically talked about wanting to kill his wife.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
Deanne Schultz was granted immunity for her testimony. There was no direct evidence that linked Deanne to actively participating in this crime, but at the end, she was such a valuable witness as it relates to presenting the motive.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
After the harrowing ride, Donna had been the victim of some strange phone calls. They had believed that the driver had been stalking her and was a danger.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
On August 29, 1995, the Springfield Police Department responded to a 911 call.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
When they arrived, they found a very grisly scene. Donna was clinging to life. She had been hit no less than seven times in the head with a hammer.
20/20
Bad Romance: Web of Lies
He still had signs of life and a pulse with two gunshot wounds to the head.
20/20

He was working out downstairs on his treadmill when he had heard a thump upstairs.

He then said he heard noises, which made him believe that Donna was in distress.

And Mark was shocked. And he said, oh my god, that's the man who's been harassing my wife this week.

Bad Romance: Web of Lies
When the police examined the scene and when they listened to Mark's explanation of what happened, the detectives came to the conclusion that Mark Winger acted in self-defense and the case was closed within approximately 48 hours.

Basically what we want to know is how somebody can come up on a campus like this with security and get murdered like that.

Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
It was like a time when they were considered witnesses. We had no reason to believe that they were involved in Laura's death.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
After the interviews, we did do some background investigating into James and Jesus and found out that they are both sex offenders.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Jesus told us initially that he was in Dallas all morning with his co-worker James and that they went from James' motel straight to Home Depot to meet up with John.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
At the time that John and Laura were leaving the house that morning, Jesus' phone was traveling from Dallas east into Rowlett.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
At that point, we knew that Jesus had a lot more information than what he was initially providing. We obtained a search warrant to seize Jesus' cell phone. Shortly after that, he fled the state.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
So how have things been lately, relationship-wise, between you and her?
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
We were able to find one email that Laura sent to John that she wanted out of the relationship.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Yes, we have a lot of commuters that work in Dallas and then come back home.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
He didn't seem concerned at all about whoever this random person might have been at the time coming back to his home. It's another red flag.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Jesus was ultimately located in the Clearwater, Florida area and taken into custody by US Marshals.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
James was infatuated with Texas Rangers. That actually worked out to our advantage.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
He mentioned that He and Jesus had driven out to Rowlett several times attempting to kill Laura, but there was always something that scared Jesus, like somebody walking down the street or it was raining, something that made them feel uncomfortable, and they would go back to Dallas.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
That information in conjunction with Jesus' cell phone records that show his phone was traveling towards Rowlett, we felt like that was the code for today is the day, you know, come get this done.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Once Laura walked in, she went to the right, which goes towards the kitchen area. And that's when Jesus jumped out.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
We were able to find that silver Kia sedan leaving Laura's neighborhood in the morning that she was killed. James is finally deciding to cooperate and gave us the information that we needed to move forward with arresting John.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
John did a very good job of making sure that he was captured on video as many places as he could be.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
He didn't give her any names at that point, so she had no idea who the intended victim was going to be.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
That purse being right there next to her, I'm wondering if she just got here.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
She still had her purse and her keys in her hand, and her shoes were several feet away from her body. So it gave us the indication that whatever happened happened pretty quick.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
We found one shell casing a couple of feet away from her body as well. That was the only piece of evidence that was left there at the scene. There was no gun. There was no blood that was out of place. There was no fingerprints. There was no DNA. So we had very little to work with. We didn't touch the body.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Right now, all I know is there's somebody down inside the house that looks like a gunshot wound.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
We didn't have any idea what we were getting into on day one when we responded to this call.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
And that purse being right there next to her, I'm wondering if she just got here. All right, let's back out.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
At the very beginning stages of an investigation like this, obviously we have to talk to everybody that lives in the house. And then John Macris, who just walked in. And we have to confirm their timeline of everything they were doing that day to rule them out as a possible suspect.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
I'll let you know everything when I find out. So at the time this happened, Laura lived in the house with her soon-to-be husband, John, and their three children, and Laura's adult brother, Brian. John's mom was also in town. Who all lives here?
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
And we felt this was somebody that was pretty close to Laura and was able to either get in the home or somebody that she let in.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Both John and Laura completed our Citizens Police Academy in the fall of 2014 and had become VIPS members for our police department.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
Our very next step was to get in touch with those stores and pull the video surveillance to make sure that what he was telling us was actually true. And there he is at the Home Depot.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
She had any problems with anybody lately? Anybody that would want to hurt her? He could not think of anyone that would want to hurt Laura. Nobody was mad at him. Nobody was after him for anything.
20/20
Bad Romance: No Tomorrow
This case had lots of twists and turns. We had no idea at the very beginning of this what we were getting into and how much planning actually did go into this. They very well may have gotten away with a perfect murder.

Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
I'd like to report a domestic dispute. Hey, we got a call about a male hitting a female and the two of them getting in this vehicle and taking off.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Essentially, when police respond to domestic violence calls, it is typically messy, where you might have a witness who sees a piece of it. What were they doing?
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Driver is showing some obscure driving, possibly intoxicated. Currently doing 45 miles an hour. Zone through here is 25. Oh, subject just hit the curb.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Body cameras worn by the Moab police capture a traffic stop that will eventually go viral, but only after she went missing.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
I'm sorry. We've just been fighting this morning. Some personal issues.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Yeah, I don't know. It's just... Sometimes I have really bad OCD and I was just cleaning and straightening up back at the van before and I was apologizing to him and saying, I'm sorry that I'm so mean because sometimes I have OCD and sometimes I just get really frustrated. I'm not like mean towards him, I just like, I guess...
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
When questioned by officers at the scene, Brian downplays the incident and chalks it up to a disagreement. So tell me what's going on.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
I was just saying, I'm sorry if I'm in a bad mood. I've just been really stressed. I had so much work. I was doing my computer every morning. So I've been building my website. So I've just been really stressed. And he doesn't really believe that I can do any of it. So that's kind of been like a... I don't know. He's like...
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
So there's two people that came to us and told us that they saw him hit you.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
When questioning Brian, police notice minor injuries on his face. Gabby admits she hit Brian first.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Gabby, this is a very, very important question. How you answer this question is going to determine what happens next.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
According to both Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, it was Gabby and not Brian who was the initial aggressor.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
You've got one on your left side of your neck. You've got one in your face here and you've got four below your feet.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Brian, unfortunately in the state of Utah, the state legislature doesn't give us discretion on these charges when it comes to domestic assault. And your own companion have made it clear that she was the primary aggressor and that she was striking you and you just received injuries.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
So at this point, you're the victim of domestic assault and even if you didn't want to pursue this, we don't have a choice. Now, the problem with her being the primary aggressor is in the instance of domestic assault, be it a male or be it a female, we shall arrest.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
So when you watch this video, what I saw was a bunch of police officers trying to sort this out, and they appeared to be compassionate towards both parties.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
So look, I'm going to speak to you frankly. I have a daughter almost your age, and I'm looking at you not so much like a suspect, but also as kind of a victim in the sense that stuff you did today that contributed to this, because you both contributed to this, is as a result of your inability to cope with the anxiety and the stress that you're having.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Normally, we take people to jail, but he's trying to work it so you can just have the van.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
What is it? No, we're a team, please. He's going to give me so much anxiety. Can we just have a driving ticket?
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The very best thing I can do is call my supervisor and see if I'm missing something here.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Gabby admitted punching him first. The technical requirement under Utah law is that this be done with an intent to cause some sort of harm or inflict pain. So as they examined the evidence in the case, they asked that specific question when she's in the back of the police car.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Gabby, this is a very, very important question. How you answer this question is going to determine what happens next. When you slapped him those times,
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Gabby gets to leave in the van while Brian, seen by the police as a domestic violence victim, is taken to a hotel for the night.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
I'm giving him a ride over to the hotel, OK? So everything's going to be OK.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Will it be a far drive for me to get him in the morning? I'm just curious.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
I'm not going to tell you where he's going to be at tonight. Like I said, I want you guys to be separated.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Brian and Gabby were told to stay away from each other for 24 hours.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Too many times women who are at risk want to go back to their abuser, and then they end up getting killed.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
On the other side of the video camera, things seem to be melting down.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Were these posts put online by Gabby? They seem like they aren't new photos.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The text message to her mom read, can you help Stan? I just keep getting his voicemails and missed calls. Stan is her grandfather's name.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
He has driven it all the way from Wyoming back to Florida. And when the police go to the Laundrie home... How you doing, sir?
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The Petitos call and text Gabby. What they don't know is that on September 1st, Brian, in that little white van, has driven back to Florida to his parents' house alone.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Ten days after they last hear from her, on September 11th, the Petitos report Gabby as missing. And on that very day, in North Port, Florida, the police go to the Laundrie's house.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
As shocking as it may seem, The Laundries are under no legal obligation to assist or to talk to the Petitos.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
So that's that. Okay. So the van is only registered to her.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Well, I'm going to tell you. I'm telling you. The title on the state of Florida is it's only hers. So it's not supposed to be here. Okay. So I'm going to take a tow truck and get it. Is a car in the way? It's my car. I can move it. I mean, so you don't have any issue with us taking the van?
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
We don't know what Brian knows. I mean, that's the bottom line. And we're hopeful to talk to him. He needs to talk to us. We need to know exactly where he was, where she was, their last locations.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
While authorities hunt for Brian in the Carlton Reserve, Gabby's parents band together in their search for Gabby.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Wyoming, the last place Gabby was seen, issued a report in 2020 that only 18% of indigenous women's missing cases got media coverage.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
A lot of the public forms the opinion that Brian Laundrie has to be involved in Gabby Petito's disappearance. But police need actual evidence of criminal activity before they can make an arrest.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Once Gabby has been identified by Jim, there's an autopsy performed, and Gabby's death is ruled a homicide.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
It actually takes five to seven minutes for somebody to actually kill another human being as they strangle him. So that is five to seven minutes where somebody is face to face with their victim, watching as they gasp for air, watching as their eyes fill up with blood. It is an incredibly gruesome, incredibly intimate form of homicide.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The reason that's important is when you look at domestic violence homicides that involve manual strangulation, there have often been instances involving non-fatal strangulation.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
This is a vicious death by any interpretation. And now, all the energy that the public had poured into finding Gabby Petito is directed at finding Brian Laundrie.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
According to the FBI, while Brian was driving Gabby's van back to Florida, it seemed as if he was trying to cover his tracks. The FBI would later say he was attempting to deceive law enforcement by sending text messages to and from Gabby's phone, as well as from Gabby's phone to her mother.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The search for Brian, first out west, then in the south, is now focused on an area in Florida not far from where his parents lived. A few weeks into the search, Brian's parents join the effort. They go into an area in the park that they had told police to search, but it had been underwater at the time. Shortly after, authorities find his remains.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
Earlier today, investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
A lawyer representing the Laundries has said the letter had nothing to do with Gabby Petito's death and had been written months earlier. Roberta Laundry would later say in an affidavit the letter was a reference to a book she'd given him called Burn After Writing, and it was intended as a way to bond with her son.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
The Petitos file multiple lawsuits. One of them is for wrongful death against Brian Laundrie's estate. Months later, there is a settlement.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
An attorney for the Laundries said in a statement, hopefully this brings some closure to this one chapter of this tragedy.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
In a deposition, Chris Laundrie says that a frantic Brian called them from the road, said he needed a lawyer, but never said Gabby was dead, only that she was gone. Roberta Laundrie said she thought maybe Brian and Gabby had gotten in a fight. Two years later, announcements by both families.
20/20
Gabby Petito: Her Parents Speak Out
As for the Moab police, Gabby's parents file a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the department, alleging negligence.

You Left Me For Dead
During the day, Mr. DeWise had been texting Lauren. He wanted her to come back over and visit with the children.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
So law enforcement was able to determine that Lauren's last text message was sent just before 11 o'clock p.m. that evening, where she had indicated to Mr. DeWise that she did not wish to attend church with him and the children that following day.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Both Natalie and Joe were pretty consistent that they had been home that evening.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
That was a very high risk type of entry that they made into the residence. The body camera can describe it much better than my words could describe it. You can definitely feel the intensity of the situation. He's not sure what he's getting into.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
I think Mr. Rolsted's a little concerned because he is in a romantic relationship with another lady at the time.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
I don't know that he's entirely straightforward with law enforcement about the nature of his relationship with Lauren, but it's ultimately determined that this was a one-time situation where they met in the parking lot and had a kiss, and that was the end of that encounter.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
I can still remember when I got the phone call from a detective cop indicating that they had found that. It was a big day.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
We ultimately found through that trace of the firearm that it was in fact Mr. DeWise who had purchased that firearm.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
That was certainly a big piece of evidence that further linked Mr. DeWise not only to the gun, but that it also linked the gun to the crime scene.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
It was a higher profile case, I think primarily because there were so many people in the community that like Lauren. They're concerned about domestic violence and they want to see people held accountable.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
All of this evidence was really sort of piling up with regards to who it was that had a motive and desire to cause harm to Lauren.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
It just further showed the degree of control and manipulation that Mr. DeWise had over those two children, Natalie and Joe.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
The most important witness to me was Ashley Van Hemert. She is a miracle.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Ashley, what are the things that you would like to say to the court and the defendant?
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
She is a miracle. The degree of courage and compassion that she displayed in getting up to confront Mr. DeWise about what he did is remarkable.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Silence is the worst thing that you can have with regards to domestic violence. Not talking about it, not bringing it out into the open, not pursuing it with law enforcement or your family members.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Ms. Butler had indicated early on that those were not made by either her or any of the ladies in the household. So those were of significant interest to law enforcement.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Law enforcement ultimately determined that Lauren had been shot multiple times and that she had gunshot wounds to both the head and chest and that resulted in her death.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
Officer Jared Robinson from the Belgrade Police Department was the first officer to arrive.
20/20
You Left Me For Dead
They ultimately relocated to Bozeman, Montana, where Lauren was able to find employment with a local bank. And Paul did some construction-type work and things of that nature.

Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
The Jean Benet Ramsey case was completely out of control.
20/20
Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
The biggest negative factor about John and Patsy Ramsey was that they had allowed their daughter to be in child beauty pageant contests, and people did not like them.
20/20
Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
Patsy and John should have been taken to the police station immediately for separate interviews, for examination of their body for defensive wounds, for collection of their clothing. That never happened.
20/20
Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
Police end their 10-day search of the Ramsey house and remove the crime scene tape. It is unknown if the family intends to resume residency at the home. We have no comment on the whereabouts of the family at this time.

If I told you right now that we have, in the process of being examined, trace evidence that appears to link you to the death of John Bonnet,
20/20
Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
So much of how law enforcement works has changed in the last 30 years. There are a number of things that people have pointed to throughout the years that could have been done better, and we acknowledge that is true. However, it is important to emphasize that while we cannot go back to that horrible day in 1996, our goal is to find JonBenet Ramsey's killer.
20/20
Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
Michael Helgoth evidently committed suicide the day after the Boulder District Attorney threatened that, hey, we're going to find you.

Forever Young: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?
Our collaboration also includes the Colorado Cold Case Review Team, which is a panel of outside experts brought together in December of 2023 to review this case. Our department has had ongoing conversations with JonBenet's family, the last of which occurred in mid-2024. Our goal is to find JonBenet Ramsey's killer. Our commitment to that has never wavered.

The mistakes they made were outrageous. They were mystifying. They were mistake after mistake after mistake.

Bad Romance: Doomsday's Bride
So quite a remarkable change. The people who knew Lori one year after meeting Chad, four people are dead.
20/20
Bad Romance: Doomsday's Bride
Remember all the GPS data? Lori's not there. Lori's not in the backyard when Chad and Alex are. She's not coming and going to Chad's property on those days.
20/20
Bad Romance: Doomsday's Bride
Birmingham, our absolute favorites, with the arrival of Tom Brady. It's a friendly competition. Oh! Well, not so friendly.
20/20
The Code Breakers
I remember walking in and going up the stairs, looking first into the bedroom that was very much in disarray.
20/20
The Code Breakers
Bedroom, there was a look like there had been some type of tussle in there. Things had been knocked around. Sheets were partially torn off. A portion of the bedpost had come off. And then walking into the bathroom and seeing her body on the floor.
20/20
The Code Breakers
I know her. I went to college with her. We were in sororities together. She was so full of life and so friendly and so nice. That just always stuck with me. To come to the scene and then suddenly realize it was Mary Catherine, it just Knocked me for a minute.
20/20
The Code Breakers
When you have your files in Sokol case, the killer's name, it's in there somewhere.
20/20
The Code Breakers
That's correct. Every now and then, someone would dust off the case file and start looking at it with fresh eyes. And I always thought, maybe this time something will spark, and we'll catch whoever did this.
20/20
The Code Breakers
So I'm helping Sam, and we reopened this case from three years, from way back in the day, going back through and getting interviews and just clearing everything up. So we were wondering if you'd have time to come down to the TV and talk with us down there. Yeah. OK.
20/20
The Code Breakers
Somebody comes into your and knocks on your door, investigators from another state, and asks you to come down to a department and talk, you're probably going to ask why. Never asks why and agrees to drive himself down and meet us there. So we'll just expect you in a couple minutes and we'll meet you down there. That's fine. All right. Thank you, sir.
20/20
The Code Breakers
But what I'm trying to do is do the three. We had to just focus on getting the fingerprints and the DNA. Yeah, have a seat.
20/20
The Code Breakers
You want to come get your fingers dirty again? We're going to try to do it on just card stock.
20/20
The Code Breakers
We talked about our families, his family, plumbing and remodeling houses. You would never guess by looking at that guy that he was concerned about why he was there or the outcome of it.
20/20
The Code Breakers
At like 6.30 in the morning, I received a call from an investigator from Beaufort. And she had explained that she had just come from the jail and that Robert Waters had hung himself in his cell.
20/20
The Code Breakers
To me, it says that you're guilty. I mean, no one is going to do that in that situation if they're innocent.
20/20
The Code Breakers
It is. Thankfully, the detectives worked very, very hard on this. And never gave up. Never gave up, and they solved it. Detective Lou Allen called me, and he said, hey, Carmen, you remember how you said you always wanted that case solved before you retired? Well, I know you've retired, but I think we got him, and he did.
20/20
The Code Breakers
It's unbelievable just in my career to see like when I started in 97 to where we're at today. You have these cases that are literally going nowhere. You give them this DNA sample and the next thing you know, you know who your suspect is.

File M For Murder
So in broad daylight, a man is shot dead in his place of business on a busy street. I'm sure it did strike fear.
20/20
File M For Murder
It was a sunny day when I was proceeding southwest here on First Capitol Drive.
20/20
File M For Murder
Well, here is proof they had a gun, a bullet hole left in the office window. They busted in through the back door, shot up the office, tried to shoot open a safe.
20/20
File M For Murder
That would be completely normal in a shock situation like that. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all when you're talking about trauma, because to be able to process that would take some time. They're moving slow. They can't think. So I make nothing of that behavior.
20/20
File M For Murder
Diane Adman became my lead. We were assigned to take her from, sadly, the scene.
20/20
File M For Murder
They were having a tough time paying bills. According to Diane, there wasn't much cash coming in. The business itself was struggling.
20/20
File M For Murder
So Diane was pretty direct with me. I think she'd had a lot of questions asked of her and then just kind of tells me boldly, I did not do this.

It's just dawning on her, wait, I'm not safe either. I have to act and get her extra patrol, and I did. But you have to still go where the evidence leads.
20/20
File M For Murder
One of the first things she says is, don't take this as a confession or anything, but this happened to my dad too. Has her father been murdered and her husband murdered as well? Has lightning struck this woman twice?
20/20
File M For Murder
So in broad daylight, a man is shot dead in his place of business on a busy street.
20/20
File M For Murder
She makes the statement, don't take this as a confession, but something like this has happened before. And I'm not quoting Diane at this point, but somebody broke into the house and shot my dad. So when I asked, did they catch the person?
20/20
File M For Murder
As I recall, like I say, it came out as a home invasion with someone shot. And so that's what we would consider a hot call. Well, when I arrived, it's 2.30 in the morning, maybe 2.35, so it's dark as can be. I immediately went to the door, knocked on the door, and the door answered. And the hair is pristine, and she's standing there in a kind of sheer nightgown.
20/20
File M For Murder
I mean, she didn't strike you as a woman who woke up in the middle of the night to find her husband murdered. No tears. The hair was all done. And I'm trying to get information for my report, and she actually lit up a cigarette. I'm thinking, this is your husband. He's just been murdered. She didn't have any emotion at all, almost.
20/20
File M For Murder
Has her father been murdered and her husband murdered as well? What a weird set of circumstances.
20/20
File M For Murder
She describes that she has a life insurance policy through work. She's not sure about the details on that.
20/20
File M For Murder
She makes this statement. Something like this has happened before. Somebody broke into the house and shot my dad.
20/20
File M For Murder
I've told her, hey, your husband's been killed. Your marriage is about to be put under a spotlight.
20/20
File M For Murder
There was no forced entry or anything. He was a business that was open for business, but it could have absolutely been a robbery.
20/20
File M For Murder
During the area canvass, there's a Mexican grocery store. It's just a couple of doors down. I think it was on the end of this particular strip mall. And they were able to locate some surveillance video.
20/20
File M For Murder
I took that a step further. Has there been any time that you two argued? Has there been any time that you were unfaithful to him or he was unfaithful to you?
20/20
File M For Murder
He was very forthcoming in the fact that the relationship between him and Bob was an intimate relationship, but very much affectionate and loving. They'd hoped to be together at some point.
20/20
File M For Murder
She describes it as he's telling him intimate things that he hasn't told me. She's telling me, I felt hurt because he wasn't speaking to me that way. So they're married.
20/20
File M For Murder
I didn't ask the specifics, but I'm just talking to her about it. Did this happen? You know, could potentially, could this be a motive?
20/20
File M For Murder
When I'm interviewing Diane, one of the things I asked was, I asked a lot of different things to the point where Diane was asking me questions like, are you telling me my husband's gay? I asked her, what did Bob tell you? What are your impressions? Her response back was, he told me no. He was going there to meet with him. They worked together, and he needed the stress relief.
20/20
File M For Murder
I'm telling Diane, Detective Stepp and Detective Grove are talking to him now. He's saying, you guys had a loud, angry argument. She said, I don't know that it was loud and angry. Well, that's what he's saying. You know, Diane, what say you? She said, I told him it was over. I told him he was going to end that friendship. But she said, I don't know if I was yelling and screaming.
20/20
File M For Murder
So Diane was pretty direct with me. I think she'd had a lot of questions asked of her and then just kind of tells me boldly, I did not do this. I didn't, Diane is just direct.
20/20
File M For Murder
She doesn't pass, but it's inconclusive. So it's just still kind of puts her in that iffy category, if you will.

He wasn't taking checks because apparently those had been bounced, and this was back in the day when checks were a thing.

There was no forced entry, but it could have absolutely been a robbery. I know one of the things they were looking for was Bob's wallet missing.

Run, Run, Run
Alan looked in the mirror and saw that the vehicle was on fire. He got out of the vehicle, went to the back of the car, and a wick was in the gas tank.
20/20
Run, Run, Run
Upon arrival, we found a vehicle that had a wick in its gas tank and had been set on fire.

So during the interviews with officers, Alan and Miriam had mentioned that Miriam was would not hurt Alan or harm him because Alan was worth more to her alive than if he were dead.

There were drawers pulled out evenly. There was a trash can knocked over. There were drawers that were open that wouldn't hold valuables anyway. And most of the drawers were open in the kitchen, right?
20/20
Run, Run, Run
They realized fairly quickly that this was a staged attempt to hide what really happened.
20/20
Run, Run, Run
This area is where I was dispatched to a car fire. We saw that somebody had placed a wick in the gas tank of a vehicle. We contacted the driver. We were speaking with him. We were speaking with his wife. As I started questioning both of them, I noticed she became a bit nervous and she'd said that she wasn't feeling well and needed to run to the restroom.
20/20
Run, Run, Run
I watched her leave the back of the vehicle, not go into the restroom she just came out of. Not right here. Not right here where she just went to the restroom. She actually went across four lanes of traffic. That's strange. Very strange. Did she ever come back? Not while I was on scene. She stayed over there. She stayed over there. When you were still here, you went into the ladies room. We did.
20/20
Run, Run, Run
It definitely was part of the investigation. Miriam was not charged with the arson in Delta because of the roadblock put up when Alan demanded the investigation be closed. He did not want to pursue it if we were looking at Miriam and that he would not cooperate with the investigation.
20/20
Run, Run, Run
I had called Allen to advise him that I felt his current wife, Miriam, was trying to kill him. And Allen got upset with me and told me that Miriam would never do that to him. And at that point, he asked me to terminate the case.

Can you explain why it seems to be mostly men But I can say that from the Austin Homicide Unit that we look into every possible aspect that we can in all these cases, and nothing has led us to believe that there is any sort of killer, especially serial killer at play here. Whenever people are out, especially in the bar districts, hopefully people keep an eye on their friends.

256: Super SCARY! Serial Killer in Austin, TX?! What is REALLY Going on at Lady Bird Lake?
I think a lot of people end up becoming incredibly intoxicated, which often leads to some people ending up in the water. And I can't speak to exactly how folks end up in the water, right? Every case is completely different. Some of the folks are homeless, sleep by the water, and may use that as a bathroom. So there's all different circumstances in all of these different cases.

I hope it helps make people feel a little bit better that through our homicide unit, we look at every possible thing that we can in trying to rule out any sort of foul play. And there's just no signs or any evidence leading to any kind of conclusion that anyone is being killed other than the ones that we've already classified as homicides.

On Tuesday, April 23rd, we received a report that a young mother and her daughter are missing. We now believe that we're investigating a double homicide. The last place anyone saw either of the two was in the community of Cranston on the evening of Tuesday, April 16th, 2019.
Serialously with Annie Elise
227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
We have Jasmine's bank card being used for an online purchase on the 18th, but we still can't determine if that was her who was purchasing. And police responded to her residence in the community of Cranston the night of April 23rd. based on concerns from her immediate family that she failed to show for a pre-planned family dinner. We took a suspect into custody for questioning this morning.
Serialously with Annie Elise
227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
No charges have been laid as of yet. We do not believe this incident to be random because the suspect and the victims knew each other. We are currently working with multiple other agencies to search the community of Cranston and the area around Bragg Creek for evidence. The crime scene unit is at a residence in the community of Cranston.
Serialously with Annie Elise
227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
Through the investigative process, we have determined that the area around Bragg Creek may have been of interest for further investigation. So we're working with Search and Rescue and many external agencies to search areas that are obviously very wooded and mountainous in that area. Any investigation involving a child is extremely difficult.

227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
A lot of the members within the homicide unit have children themselves. As a result of the investigation, we believe the suspect may have attempted to destroy evidence related to the homicide by means of burning sometime between Tuesday, April 16th and Saturday, April 20th. This occurred in the area of Bragg Creek, Elbow Falls, Prittus and or East Kananaskis.

227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
Anyone who may have signs of a suspicious fire in an unusual place, not in a designated fire pit, is asked to contact police. We continue to seek witnesses to the movements of a grey Mercedes SUV in the same area. A forensic search of the home in Cranston has been completed and the residence has now been released to the homeowner.
Serialously with Annie Elise
227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
The search of the Bragg Creek area will resume once snow accumulation has melted. Members of the public are advised not to attempt a search on their own during this time period as it could result in accidental destruction of evidence under the snow.

227: WARNING: Canadian Version of Chris Watts | The Case of Robert Leeming
However, police continue to seek public assistance with any information about the movement of the Grey SUV or fires in the area during the week of April 16th. Obviously, we keep an open mind in any investigation, but the person that was taken into police custody last week remains our prime suspect.
