Chapter 1: What are John’s initial impressions of Doom: The Dark Ages?

12.017 - 15.46 John

So, Ryan, initial impressions of Doom so far?

0

Chapter 2: How does the gameplay compare to previous Doom titles?

16.04 - 26.489 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

Bro, I am ready to rip and tear. I have needed this game for a long time, brother. I'm pretty stoked.

0

27.813 - 32.697 John

Yeah, it definitely feels like pure violence, man.

0

32.857 - 39.882 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

I mean, I'm a kid in an arcade again, just blown up bodies like it is. It is been a blast.

0

Chapter 3: What makes the game feel like an arcade experience?

40.162 - 43.945 John

That's a really good comparison. That's what this felt like is like an arcade game to me.

0

44.245 - 66.725 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

Yeah. 100%. Yeah, you're in there. The music is fantastic. I want to run through a wall, which you can do, which is amazing. You just go through. It all syncs up together. It's utter chaos, utter destruction. Initial impressions are a crisp, clean combat with lots of energy and just crazy, crazy everything.

0

Chapter 4: What are the differences in narrative styles between games?

67.205 - 88.945 John

Yeah, the game is extremely kinetic for sure. It's such a hard pivot for me going from something that is so narratively driven like Expedition 33 to this where it's like, okay, so you're the Doom Slayer and just go kill stuff. And I'm like, whoa, where's the story? Don't worry about the story. Just go kill stuff. Yeah, just you see it, go kill. Oh, yeah.

0

88.965 - 91.848 John

By the way, right away, there's like 100 ways you can kill things.

0

Chapter 5: How many ways can you kill enemies in Doom?

92.868 - 99.131 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

And then you just keep upgrading to more weapons and more ways to kill things. Imagine if they had the Slayer against the Painteress, bro.

0

99.871 - 109.775 John

Oh my gosh. No contest. Yeah, right? That's pretty funny. I would have been laughed at off. What do you think about how far into the game are you so far?

0

Chapter 6: What are the challenges of playing on Nightmare difficulty?

110.515 - 121.46 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

I'm through a couple chapters so far. I'm a few hours in. I like to take my time. I did test out Nightmare. It is a nightmare. So be ready for that. Buckle up if you want to get crazy.

0

121.98 - 152.802 John

Okay, yeah, I'm on the basic difficulty right now. I gotta tell you, the only thing that was a little unexpected is some of the character design feels kind of uninspired to me, man. The NPC good guys seem like generic space vikings, and then the prince, whatever the evil... What looks like the antagonist is the prince, like, devil guy just looks kind of basic to me, man.

0

Chapter 7: What are the critiques of character design in the game?

153.142 - 154.123 John

Do you have any thoughts on that?

0

154.784 - 174.359 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

I can see that a little bit. I mean, my opinion, though, I'm the slayer, so I don't care about any of them. And I'm just like, who are these scrubs? Like, I'm just here to rip and tear. So I didn't mind it too much, but I do see what you're saying, especially about the Viking-looking guys. They just kind of look like generic soldier dudes.

0

174.76 - 190.42 John

Yeah, it looks like there is a... audible commercial or something recently where like they were like doing something where it's like vaguely supposed to look like a dune movie or something you're like oh there's like generic space guys like that's what that looked like to me but aside from that

0

191.71 - 201.479 John

Man, I don't know that I've played a game that made you feel so absolutely powerful and unstoppable like this. You're like a juggernaut, bro.

0

202.64 - 220.037 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

Absolutely. I love the weight they gave the character. And as a Slayer, you feel strong without your enemies feeling weak. So it's not like these are just a bunch of marshmallows that you're smashing through. These are strong characters. You're just that much more powerful, which I loved.

220.157 - 243.573 John

That's a really good way to put it. I didn't play Doom Eternal. And so just based on the character design and stuff, my mental frame of reference was something like Halo. And I go, OK, so I'm going into this like halo thinking that, you know, you're you're strong. You're obviously like the strong, willful protagonist, but you're like not going to be a bullet sponge, man.

243.613 - 267.038 John

You can't just go out there and soak everything up. And so you're going to need to like hide behind cover and be tactical. This game does a really good job of, like you said, making you feel like an absolute juggernaut, but with a tactical end that is completely different than like a Halo. You know, it's very, very in your face, very, very violent. It nails that part for sure.

267.458 - 288.803 Ryan (Chumba Casino Narrator)

And one of my favorite parts of it, too, is when you're in low health, you're incentivized to attack. You have to be super hyper aggressive. Okay, I have five health. Let me go charge that enemy group of 15 and try to get some health orbs. Like, I love that fact that it's just constant go, go, go, go, go. And you never stop just destroying.

289.303 - 314.613 John

Yeah, I agree. I also like that they sort of. queued up some of the different attacks to have specific advantages against specific enemy types and that kind of thing. So that if you're low on ammo, you kill a guy like this, and this is how you'll get some more ammo. If you're low on health, you kill a guy like this. And that's cool.
