You can’t buy good neighbors (+ building your village & communication in relationships)
Thu, 03 Apr 2025
Happy Thursday! This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we’re talking about what it really means to have good neighbors—because as you guys put it, “you can renovate a house, but you can’t buy good neighbors.” We start with some Year 1 milestone updates (why am I irrationally sad?!), from moving Tate into her own room to starting solids (Harrison has officially been named Chief Solids Officer). Plus, we recap our first annual neighborhood block party—a new tradition in the making! Next, we break down what today’s ‘village’ to raise a child actually looks like—and specifically, how we’ve built ours. Then, we’re diving into communication in relationships (and in general!)—the good, the bad, and why ‘clean’ means something completely different to both of us. In Things We DMed Each Other, we have to talk about Frida’s breast milk-flavored ice cream (yes, really—it’s not an April Fools’ joke). And finally, we’re (well actually just me Harrison had to leave for a meeting LOL) responding to your comments before wrapping up. We LOVE YOU GUYS! Okay.
My eyesight also isn't good.
Should I get my eyes checked?
Maybe.
When's the last time you got your eyes checked?
It's been forever. I have like 2020 well 2020 is actually not perfect vision a little bit below that is good like 18 Would you ever get lazy guy surgery I wouldn't need it Your eyes fade over time. Well, I would I would get it if I needed it, but right now I don't need it I've got great eyesight Look at your genetics

Chapter 2: What happened at the first neighborhood block party?
Now they're our genetics because Tate will have half mine, half yours, and let's hope she gets my eyes. I love that. Okay, ready?
Let's do it.
Okay, are we rolling? All right. Do you want to do it today? I'll do it. Welcome to Two Parents and a Podcast. Big day.
Why is it a big day?
We have had just a rotating door of people coming in and out of here. We got lots of updates. House updates, baby updates, Tate. Okay, so we'll start here. Little Tater Totski slept in her own room last night for the first time. And I thought it was going to be like, I thought I was going to be a wreck. But the best thing that you did was you put her to bed when I was in the shower.
Well, I saw her like, because when you initially got into the shower, she was like very, very loud and very fussy and very upset. And then she calmed. And when she calmed, I was like, oh my God, I think she just tired herself out. And so I just like zipped her right into that bed. And I just like put both arms under her.
I felt like she was like kind of in a daze and then just like slowly transitioned her out. And she did like a minor adjustment when I put her in the crib. And then she was just like knocked out right after. So we got really lucky.
These milestones for the first year of a baby are harder than I ever thought as a parent. Like I didn't think that some of these... Moments were going to be hard on me and transition her first food, her six month mark, and now transitioning her from our room to her room. Those they're really sad because it makes you remember that time is fleeting.
Like last night wasn't a moment for me.

Chapter 3: What does 'building your village' mean?
Yeah. Logically, it makes sense. Like I definitely think there's going to be some like rough nights. Yeah. Because with the snoo, it would like just put her – if she was like – if she had energy, I find the snoo could like get her down. Or if she was fussy, I thought the snoo could really get her down easily.
Whereas like when she's in a mood, how she's just going to be able to go the crib path, I'm curious to see. I think we're going to have a couple tough nights or more.
We want – I mean and I think too what's interesting is like last night we're calling it a really good night. And she still woke up twice. 12 and 5. Yeah, exactly.
Went to bed at, what, 10?
Yeah, 10. Woke up at midnight. And I think she was just confused where she was. And that's an example of when the snoo would have calmed her. Yeah. But I agree, we're going to have some just... And we might have a sleep regression. There's a whole lot of things that'll happen. But overall, I think she liked... We're using the Merlin suit.
I think she really likes that because she's been wanting to stretch out.

Chapter 4: How can we improve communication in relationships?
Yeah, I would agree. I'd also agree that even though she can't talk and is only six months old, it seems very clear when she woke up at midnight that she was just like very confused.
Yeah, she didn't know where she was. She wasn't in her snooze shaking. Okay, now let's move on to solids, the other update. Okay. Harrison has been deemed chief of solids in this household. Food is his duty. Been delegated to you. I love this thing we're doing where it's like, you own that. We're both owning sleeping.
This has been a fun one.
Okay, so tell us our meal plan for the week.
So this week we are starting it off by doing avocado over the first two days and then avocado and chicken broth. And then we're switching to sweet potato at the end of the week.
And chicken broth is to get protein?
A bit of everything. Yeah. It seems to be a highly nutrient food. So that's even a word.

Chapter 5: What are the different definitions of 'clean' in relationships?
Nutrient.
A very nutritious food.
There's one thing that I want to see. Like I kind of want like a push-up pop. You know, a push pop ice cream.
I got an ad for this on Instagram yesterday and I went to buy it. It wasn't an ad. It was a video. I wanted to buy it and it wasn't there.
Is it a push pop?
I think I want to buy it right now if I can.
Is it a push pop?

Chapter 6: What is the story behind the breast milk-flavored ice cream?
I don't know what it's called. We'll see if they have it on Amazon.
Does it look like a push pop?
It's like, what do you call it? A push pop? Soother with food holes.
Okay. I don't want that though.
Oh, my God. Amazon is just amazing.

Chapter 7: How do we respond to listener comments?
Chapter 8: Why can't you buy good neighbors?
Her being in her own room.
No. I'm sorry to take that away from you.
It's okay. You didn't take it away from me, but it's funny because you were the one who was having, you were pressing so hard against it.
Yeah. Well, what I just realized is when she wakes up in the morning, we can just bring her back in our bed for, for cuddles and food.
She still woke up in the middle of the night. She woke up at midnight and she was like very confused where she was. So we fed her for a bit and then she went back to bed. The key, here's the key though, to moving her to her own room. It's you don't wait till they're fully asleep to put them in the crib. You do it right when they're starting to doze off.
Then you move them in their crib and then they finish falling asleep in their crib. But if you move them while they're awake or while they're fully asleep, that's when they wake up and it's over.
Yeah. Logically, it makes sense. Like I definitely think there's going to be some like rough nights. Yeah. Because with the snoo, it would like just put her – if she was like – if she had energy, I find the snoo could like get her down.
