We’re diving into our joint finances (what we said we were gonna do, but spoiler alert: didn’t), the costs of childcare, and how we’re setting up a college fund for Tate. We also chat about everything from the costs of parenthood we didn’t expect, to what’s been surprisingly expensive, and other ways we’re planning for the future (are we putting the baby on payroll???). Chapter 2: How much does childcare really cost?
We did. We literally forgot the entire pump parts, all of them. So that made it interesting. Now my milk supply is down. I also think altitude had a lot to do with it. But also, losing the AirPod was frustrating. Okay, back in the day, if I was flying and I lost one single AirPod, I think I would just be annoyed at myself.
But I'm not that annoyed at myself today because it's like I had a baby in my lap. Like the AirPod was just – I remember looking at you and being like, I can't find my AirPod. And you're like, get over it. Get over it.
It's so annoying though.
Well, you also lost an AirPod.
Yeah. Yeah, I'm very annoyed.
We each have one AirPod. But I did the Apple delivery this morning. I woke up. I said, I'm not going to let that keep me down. I said, Harrison, you want some new AirPods or not? And he said, no. He's giving me the move it along. I think it's interesting. Okay, fine. We went to a Jewish wedding. It was my first Jewish wedding ever. Mazel Tov. Break the glass.
It's not my first Jewish wedding, actually, now that I'm thinking about breaking the glass. I think I've been to two.
Okay. Okay.
Yeah, been to two. Never paid attention to the glass breaking, though. Shatters into a million different pieces, and the whole point is you're never going to be able to put it back together.

Chapter 3: What are the costs of a hospital bill?
I was once at a Jewish wedding, and the guy missed the stomping. It took him either his third or fourth try, and he was a big guy, rugby player, and he couldn't get it. He was too nervous.

There's also a bigger story about that guy. That guy was actually discussed at the wedding in not the greatest light, but we're not going to go down that path.

Chapter 8: What are your thoughts on the costs versus benefits of a nanny share?
Yeah, well, I think we definitely will. We just haven't. The update there is there is no update. Okay, so now let's go into current things, costs, etc. The first one we're going to do is how much is a nanny versus how much is daycare with a burp. So we have our nanny share. Okay. And a lot of questions are, how did you even find your nanny? We found our nanny.
We probably interviewed eight to 10 nannies through a nanny scouting service. Um, here it was called. We didn't find one through that. We ended up finding her through a daycare that was closing down. Our neighbor down the street had some resumes from there and we found Maria through that. And Maria is like reading her a book right now. We got a video earlier in Spanish and I absolutely love it.
So our neighbors have a baby that's two weeks younger than ours. We do the nanny Monday, Wednesday, Friday here. Tuesdays and Thursdays, they go over to their house and we split the cost directly down the middle. So she's $30 an hour. So $15 an hour per family. And we have her from eight to four. So we have her eight hours a day, five days a week. So I know it's $7,200 every three months.
So it's $28,000 a year. Each. Each, yeah. Okay, so that's how much the nanny is for the nanny share. Now, daycares around here, did you know the average cost of daycare in America is $300 a week?
That seems really expensive.
I thought so too. But that's what I said.
But I need more context on that number.
That's just what I said, the average cost. I was like reading about it. So the daycares that we've looked at around here in Austin, the one that Tate can start... she'll be a baby shark when she's one years old. We looked at a Montessori, which was $15,000. We're not doing that one. We looked at, it's just like a private nonprofit school.
It's $6,000 a year, so that's obviously a lot cheaper than the nanny is. And so there's different ways, though. You can look at it. But the reason we wanted to do the nanny share was we wanted her home the first year. But the good news about the nanny share is she's still around our neighbor's baby. She still gets out of the house two days a week, and she's here three days a week.
