The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz

The Hockey Show: Playoff Madness

Fri, 25 Apr 2025

Description

It's a loaded Hockey Show as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing, so Roy, David, Rose, and Ethan naturally start with former Florida Panthers' goaltender Spencer Knight's hunt for an apartment. They dive into wins and fails of the week, which includes Team USA's women winning the World Championships on a golden goal, Matthew Tkachuk coming back with a vengeance, and the epic harmonica national anthem in Los Angeles. Then, Adnan Virk joins the show to break down what has gone wrong for the Edmonton Oilers, what has gone right for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the mess Jim Rutherford created in Vancouver this offseason with his comments about Quinn Hughes. Plus, Adnan sticks around to discuss the Panthers' series with the Tampa Bay Lightning, whether or not Brandon Hagel's hit on Aleksander Barkov is a suspendable offense, and why the Panthers were doubted in this series. Chapter 1: Who are the main hosts and what are their views on musicals?

0.409 - 2.21 Ethan Podolsky

I'm a big fan of musicals. Get out of here.

0

2.77 - 16.037 Roy

Big fan. I hate musicals. I love musicals. That's my boy, Roy. I hate musicals. I'm with you. What about Disney movies, Roy? I hate Disney movies. You don't like Frozen? No. I liked Soul. Soul was great. Soul was good. Soul was awesome.

0

16.277 - 16.898 Rose

I didn't like Soul.

0

16.938 - 21.06 Roy

Soul was very good. What? You didn't like Soul? No. Why?

0

21.08 - 23.081 Rose

It was not that profound.

24.101 - 33.4 Roy

What the f*** are you talking about? He dies and comes back to life. Yeah, bro.

33.46 - 38.45 David Samson

That statute of limitations is up on soul. That came out during the pandemic.

38.47 - 57.595 Dan Le Batard

You said it's not profound? The guy dies. We're talking about mortality here. Welcome to the Hockey Show. My name is Roy Bellamy. That's David Troika, the Hockey News. We have Rosie and Ethan in the shipping container, and we are all unhappy. We will get to why we are unhappy.

57.615 - 58.036 David Samson

I'm very happy.

Chapter 2: What challenges is Spencer Knight facing in finding an apartment in Chicago?

63.784 - 72.268 Ethan Podolsky

It's a similar feeling to last June. Yeah. To the final a little bit. Yeah. We should have been really happy after game two, and we weren't.

0

72.428 - 85.533 Dan Le Batard

Yeah, there's one instance on why we are unhappy, and we will get to that with Adnan Burke later in the show. But first, well, I can't even say we can lighten the mood with this because apparently Spencer Knight can't find a house. Play the video.

0

86.673 - 103.888 Spencer Knight

So right when I got here, I started looking at places to live because living in a city is different than living in, say, a suburb where it's, you know, okay, guys live in this one suburb. It's 10 minutes in the rain. All right, which house do you like? You know, there's townhomes, there's condos, there's duplex downs, there's single-family homes, there's high-rise apartments.

0

104.328 - 119.854 Spencer Knight

You know, there's a train next to one apartment. I don't like that. You know, like, that's weird. I don't know why they're above ground and, like, so loud all the time. So I don't like that. I don't wanna live in a place that has super loud like that. Okay, this street's loud, this street's not, this street's a one-way. There's someone above me here, the floors are thin.

0

119.874 - 135.858 Spencer Knight

There's so many little things that go into living in a city that seem, actually, you don't think of when you're just in Florida, when you're in a house and you're just like, I have my house and this is my spot. The only thing bothering me might be the lizards in Florida in my backyard.

137.363 - 147.353 Dan Le Batard

Poor Spencer Knight. The former future of this franchise in Florida is now the current goaltender in Chicago, and he's having a hard time trying to find a place to live.

147.713 - 153.96 Ethan Podolsky

I'm torn. Part of me obviously feels for the guy, but part of me is like, dude, you have options. Well, clearly.

155.141 - 169.119 David Samson

What I learned from this video is he's never seen Blues Brothers because he didn't know that there are apartments in Chicago that are right next to the L train, just like Elwood Blues' apartment in Blues Brothers where the train comes by. Excellent reference. So often you won't even notice.

169.359 - 180.068 Ethan Podolsky

Yeah, it's often. Yeah, you can fall asleep to it now. It's just like a record. But that's a better point, I think. If Spencer Knight hasn't seen Blues Brothers, between the fact that it's a classic and the fact that he lives in Chicago.

Chapter 3: What are some recent sports crossover moments involving NBA and NHL players?

221.837 - 226.002 Ethan Podolsky

I'm ashamed to say that I've never seen it. At Bob's Country Bunker.

0

226.363 - 226.864 David Samson

I've never seen Hamilton.

0

226.884 - 230.114 Ethan Podolsky

Rolling, rolling, rolling. I feel like I'm the only person left.

0

230.134 - 236.159 David Samson

Stand by your man. All right, you guys are... Yeah, you got me started on Blues Brothers and you lost me.

0

236.639 - 238 Dan Le Batard

Yeah, that's Chicago. Hockey.

238.401 - 239.401 David Samson

No more musical talk.

239.562 - 257.352 Dan Le Batard

All right, fine. Let's move on to a bit that they did on Inside the NBA. TNT loves to do a crossover between the NBA and the NHL because... They got to. At this point, they have to because they're losing the NBA, so they got to do that. Lean into hockey. Yeah, lean into hockey.

257.633 - 270.736 Dan Le Batard

Inside the NBA, promoting the brothers over there across the studio at the hockey side, had Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, and Charles Barkley shooting pucks on Shaquille O'Neal in front of the net. Unfortunately.

270.756 - 273.636 Stephen A. Smith

Going tonight. Chuck, you got your stick back.

Chapter 4: What are this week's wins and fails in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

429.548 - 436.993 Dan Le Batard

Yeah, it's going to take like two years to get those dreads back. So, Anthony DeClaire, you can grow your hair out, brother. Is he dead another job?

0

438.058 - 457.949 David Samson

No. He'll get a job. I was listening to 32 Thoughts. He'll get a job as an advisor somewhere just because he's Lou Lamorello and he's a name. He recycles people. Exactly. He'll get a job just in some front office as an advisor, quote unquote, and he'll fade into irrelevancy. Bullshit.

0

458.37 - 463.755 Ethan Podolsky

As long as it's not like an advisor role where he can advise people not to shave.

0

464.356 - 468.84 David Samson

I highly doubt he gets a GM job again, for sure, though, especially with the way that things went in New York this year.

0

468.86 - 484.434 Ethan Podolsky

Can you imagine like he's sitting in the back of like a hockey ops meeting and they're all going over the season to come and he's in the back and he's like, I have a suggestion. Maybe they shouldn't shave. And for the first time, everybody can just be like, anybody else? Never again. No new business?

485.114 - 496.862 Dan Le Batard

Never. Moving on. All right. Let's go to our wins and fails of the week presented by Jägermeister. Serve it cold or don't serve it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. For more, visit Jägermeister.com. Drink responsibly. David.

497.483 - 518.167 Ethan Podolsky

Roy. I have two wins of the week, actually. My first one, similar to last week, it's for all of us. We are all winners. Every week we are all winners. Well, you know, we can share the love, all the better. But for me, this was my welcome to the playoffs moment. The playoffs started last weekend. The Panthers didn't play for four days. But in the span of what felt like 10 minutes the other night,

518.747 - 536.315 Ethan Podolsky

The Oilers came back from like a million goal deficit to tie the game in Los Angeles. Then the Kings win the game with like a minute to go after the Oilers just came back on them. And all this is happening while Colorado and Dallas are playing one of the most exciting overtimes that we'd seen in the playoffs so far. And granted, it's early, but it was a very exciting overtime.

536.335 - 550.802 Ethan Podolsky

Dallas ended up winning the game. Their fans are going crazy. It was a kind of an upset win because they hadn't won in forever. And Colorado is really good right now. Just that whole sequence of about 10, 15 minutes in real time. I was so excited on my couch. It wasn't even 10 to 15 minutes. It was like four minutes.

Chapter 5: What happened with the New York Islanders' management and player hairstyle rules?

644.98 - 653.244 Rose

I'm going for a win now that we're talking about this because L.A. is winning against Edmonton, so we don't have to fly to Edmonton and don't say anything, Ethan.

0

653.304 - 660.387 David Samson

Thank you very much. Don't jinx it, Rose. Don't jinx it. I know. The Oilers were down 3-0 in the cup final last year. You had to go to Edmonton twice.

0

660.487 - 664.889 Rose

Right now, I'm liking what I'm seeing, so I'm going to go, and those are my wins.

0

664.989 - 665.83 Dan Le Batard

Rose is high in the Kings.

0

665.85 - 666.43 Rose

Beautiful park.

666.73 - 687.421 Dan Le Batard

All right, my win of the week, I got two of them. First, the IIHF Women's World Championship ended with Freebird being played in Czechia. Yes. Tessa Janicki ended up scoring the golden goal in overtime for the United States to beat Canada 4-3 in Czechia. So they got the gold. Congratulations, ladies. That is excellent for you. Really happy for you.

687.441 - 690.442 Dan Le Batard

So shout out to the United States Women's Hockey Club.

690.462 - 693.604 Ethan Podolsky

Don't you love a good stick toss into the crowd celebration?

693.864 - 694.604 Dan Le Batard

Oh, yeah, absolutely.

Chapter 6: Who are the winners and losers of the week in hockey and why?

834.324 - 852.156 Dan Le Batard

Yeah, my fellow of the week is this guy. Apparently he can't decide whether he's a Panthers fan or a Lightning fan because he took two separate jerseys, two separate Panthers jerseys and a separate Lightning jersey, cut them in half and sewed each half together with the other one. It looks ridiculous.

0

852.516 - 853.016 Ethan Podolsky

And he's number 69?

0

853.276 - 871.624 Dan Le Batard

Yeah, they were custom jerseys, by the way. The player number was 69, and the name on the back was Dougie Fresh. You know what that means? There are two versions of this jersey. Because the Panthers half said Dougie and has six. The Lightning half had Fresh and nine.

0

871.664 - 881.169 Dan Le Batard

So that means that there's another half that has a Lightning portion that says Dougie and six and the Panthers version that has Fresh and nine. Well, that makes sense. That's loser mentality.

0

881.189 - 883.451 Ethan Podolsky

If that one gets dirty, he can go to his backup.

885.172 - 889.434 Dan Le Batard

Whatever, man. I mean, he spent $500 on two jerseys just to ruin both of them.

890.074 - 895.685 Ethan Podolsky

It's a weird look. For all the years of Panthers lightning hockey, I don't think I've ever seen that before. It's a weird look.

896.005 - 912.141 Dan Le Batard

I've seen bad Panthers jerseys. I've seen a fake jersey from China with DeSantis on the back of the jersey. And that's equally as bad as that, basically, in my humble opinion. Ethan. Ethan.

912.892 - 932.242 David Samson

All right, my fail of the week goes to Evan Bouchard, and I'm going to tell you why here. This goal that he lets up to Quinton Byfield, Game 2 was a massacre by the Los Angeles Kings. Byfield walks right in. Now, a lot of people are saying you've got to blame Darnell Nurse here because it's his responsibility to pick up Byfield, and Bouchard's just cutting off the passing lane.

Chapter 7: What insights does Adnan Virk share about recent hockey events and players?

1275.757 - 1276.678 Dan Le Batard

No, let's not do that.

0

1277.038 - 1281.26 Ethan Podolsky

I got a better idea, Adnan. How about you and I do a Broadway revival reviews? Let's just.

0

1281.4 - 1283.161 Adnan Virk

Oh, the producers. Yeah, go ahead and do that.

0

1283.361 - 1284.361 Ethan Podolsky

Adnan, I have one more.

0

1284.381 - 1287.203 Adnan Virk

On Broadway. David and Adnan, go check it out. Let's go.

1287.403 - 1296.589 David Samson

We have one more movie question for you before we get to hockey. Roy claims to have never seen Toy Story or an episode of Friends. Do you believe him?

1297.353 - 1314.724 Adnan Virk

Listen, I'm with him on Friends. I've also never seen an episode. Way to go, Roy. You've never come across an episode just glancing? I've come across and flipped and gone, oh, Friends, I hate this show. Keep going. That's what I'm saying. I've come across. I've not seen an episode. I've not seen a scene of it. I've seen 10 seconds, perhaps. Oh, there's Jennifer Aniston. She had the Rachel haircut.

1314.764 - 1331.091 Adnan Virk

I know these things as a pop culture guy, but I'm like, I don't like it. I know the Rachel cut. I know Schwimmer. I know Matthew. Listen, I read Matthew Perry's book, Rose, because he's Canadian, so I read his book, so I know things about Friends. But like Roy, I've never watched an episode of Friends. Never. More shocking than Toy Story, especially because Roy has a daughter.

1331.311 - 1345.817 Adnan Virk

And Toy Story is pretty epic, Roy. I would get on it. It's a great, great movie. What if I... What if I... And by the way, we talked about it earlier. Normally, sequels are not good. There's a rare one that the Toy Story 3 might be the best, actually, of the four of them. Toy Story 3, magical ending. One might say profound, Rose. I like Toy Story 3.

Chapter 8: What are the hosts' opinions on popular TV shows like Friends and Seinfeld?

1472.503 - 1486.729 Adnan Virk

And the signs said, and I'm not a poker guy, but a full house beats a pair of aces. And that's what I think of with the Kings. I go, hey, a full house. They've got a talented team top to bottom. That beats the pair of aces of McDavid and Dreisaitl. And honestly, if L.A. doesn't win this series, if L.A.

0

1486.709 - 1501.141 Adnan Virk

's fourth straight year, like you said, Roy, to be up 2-0, you might as well just go ahead and cancel the franchise. Just go ahead and move and just say we're done. If we can't beat these guys the fourth time in a row, and this time with home ice, and clearly feeling like the favorite, then it's ballgame. Luke Robitaille's been fun. See ya. But I think they win. I think Jim Hiller's a good coach.

0

1501.201 - 1504.864 Adnan Virk

I do not think they put their foot off the gas. Oilers win game three, but Kings in six.

0

1505.024 - 1528.271 David Samson

I'll say this. I'll say this. Last year, when the Oilers were down 2-0 and then down 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final, there were signs of life, right? There were good games. They played good games, but the Panthers just kind of got them at the end of a couple of those games. There are no signs of life from the Oilers after Game 2, really. Game 1, you saw McDavid. He wheeled his team back into it.

0

1528.291 - 1547.249 David Samson

He had four points. But I just kind of think that in Game 2, you saw a shift. Now there's a goalie controversy because they made the change for Pickard in Game 2. It just feels like this is L.A. 's year. It just feels like they finally have it right, all the recipes this year. This is their year to get out of the first round.

1549.404 - 1563.35 Adnan Virk

By the way, Dave, to your point, I just saw a great documentary with the Hartford Whalers. And as Roy knows, having been at ESPN for nine years, they lived in Connecticut the whole time there. I'm like, God, I wish the Whalers were here. There's no sports teams here. But when the Whalers actually went around, as you guys know, they're in the Adams division.

1563.71 - 1576.976 Adnan Virk

One year, John Forsen, who's the great play-by-play man for Amazon Prime and was the voice of the Whalers, they had the seventh best record in hockey. They were only fourth in their division. That's how good the Adams division was. They always lost the Bruins and the Habs. The one year they actually went around, they held the parade. They won.

1577.256 - 1579.938 Adnan Virk

They won one round and they held a parade in Connecticut.

1579.958 - 1582.6 Ethan Podolsky

That's the original Nashville Predators right there.
