76.407 - 90.093 Bryce Crawford

Now, we got a couple different things going on here, but we're about to watch Jesus move in his earthly ministry. And I'm excited for these next few passages here in chapter five, because this is awesome. We're now watching Jesus walk out his earthly ministry.

0

Chapter 3: How does Jesus begin his earthly ministry?

91.704 - 112.81 Bryce Crawford

Chapter five, verse one, on one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the words of God, he was standing by the lake of Genesaret and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land and he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

0

113.49 - 127.178 Bryce Crawford

So now we're looking, Jesus is being pressed. There's such a big crowd. People are probably flooding Jesus. They're saying that they want to hear the word of God. They want to hear his teachings, but there's also people that are filtered in there that just want the healing of God. They want the benefits of Jesus. They don't want him as their king.

0

127.198 - 144.33 Bryce Crawford

They just want the benefits of the kingdom, the gifts and not the giver. They're pressing him. So he's got to get in a boat to make space so he can actually teach them. And he gets into Simon Peter's boat and Simon Peter allows him in. So we're about to watch Jesus basically show Simon Peter a favor here.

0

144.35 - 166.088 Bryce Crawford

It says, when he had finished speaking, he said to him, he said to Simon, put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. And Simon answered, master, we toiled all night and took nothing. So Jesus is asking Peter to do what in his eyes is the impossible. They've been up all night. They've been fishing and haven't caught a single thing.

0

166.829 - 192.73 Bryce Crawford

And then he goes, but at your word, I will let down the nets. But Jesus, I mean, but Simon Peter's, but Simon Peter's, but I'll try, I'll do it for you, is showing Simon Peter's humility and ability to submit to Jesus Christ. He's like, but I will listen to you. Your Lord, I will listen. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.

Chapter 4: What miracle does Jesus perform for Simon Peter?

193.05 - 214.489 Bryce Crawford

They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled the boat so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees and said, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. He's saying, man, Jesus, I was wrong. I was wrong. I'm acknowledging that you're right. He's calling him Lord. It's like you're the Christ.

0

216.021 - 233.823 Bryce Crawford

For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of the fish that they had taken. And so were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. So James, John, and Simon Peter were all fishermen. That was their job. They were fishermen. And Jesus said to Simon, do not be afraid for now on you will be catching men.

0

234.524 - 255.761 Bryce Crawford

And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. I love this story because now we see Jesus call just regular old fishermen. What was just known as like a bum job back in the day, like these just regular bums, Joe Schmoes. Jesus calls them to follow him. He says, look, You thought that this was your calling was to be a fisherman all your life?

0

256.021 - 274.539 Bryce Crawford

Yeah, you are going to be a fisherman, but this time you're going to be a fisher of men. I'm going to call you to actually bring the fish to me, bring the lost sheep to me. I think it's so powerful, just practical. Jesus calling the disciples. Now we're going to watch Jesus heal the leper. And I love this passage right here. It's short, but it's beautiful.

0

275.2 - 288.425 Bryce Crawford

While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. A leper was someone who was extremely sick. There was no hope for improvement for this person. The lepers would hang out outside of the city. These guys were outcasts.

288.805 - 308.317 Bryce Crawford

They would oftentimes have bells on their staffs or bells on them so that when they were walking, they could warn people that they were coming so people wouldn't get near them. Because if you touch someone who was a leper, you were deemed unclean because lepers were deemed unclean. These were outcasts, unclean people, no hope for improvement.

308.597 - 327.946 Bryce Crawford

And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. He doesn't touch Jesus because he realizes if he touches Jesus, he's going to now make Jesus unclean according to the law. And so he's like, look, I'm going to fall before him, keep my distance, say, Jesus, if it be in your will, please make me clean.

328.646 - 351.711 Bryce Crawford

And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will be clean. Jesus Christ touches the very man that would deem him unclean. Why does he touch the quote unquote unclean man? Jesus is showing compassion on the leper. Jesus could have healed the leper without touching him. He could have said, be healed in Jesus name. Then he would have been healed.

352.031 - 375.404 Bryce Crawford

But no, Jesus Christ shows compassion on the leper by touching him when no one would. I wonder when the last time this leper has felt the touch of a loved one. When's the last time this leper has gotten a hug from a friend or a hug from a family member or someone shook his hand? No one would touch this man. He was an outcast. Everyone wrote him off as he'll never get better.

Chapter 5: How does Jesus heal the leper?

496.977 - 515.846 Bryce Crawford

But finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. So now they come here, the crowd's so big, they can't even get the paralytic man in the crowd. But these guys, they don't give up. And he let them down through the roof. They climbed up to the roof.

0

515.886 - 535.819 Bryce Crawford

There's often a staircase at that time to get up to the roof. They get up to the roof and they lower him down through the roof. And when Jesus, when he saw their faith, he said, man, your sins are forgiven now. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? Now listen. Let's stop right there.

0

537.202 - 558.933 Bryce Crawford

This is what I want to highlight here in this passage. I want you right now to think of someone in your life, a family member, father, mother, brother, sister, a close friend who seems to be so far gone, who's so lost, lost in their sin, lost in their addictions, lost in their struggles. I want you to think of that person right now.

0

560.013 - 581.396 Bryce Crawford

Why is our initial instinct as followers of Jesus to write them off like society wrote off the leper? Why society wrote off the paralytic? Because they think, oh, in the natural, there's nothing God can do. There's nothing. Why is it that we write the closest people to us off when they're so far from God? Yet in the passage of the paralytic, the paralytic's friends, they didn't give up.

0

581.416 - 603.826 Bryce Crawford

They said, well, just because we can't get to Jesus in front doesn't mean we can't get to him. There's got to be a way. And it was through the friend's faith that moved Jesus's heart to heal the paralytic. How can it be so that it's through our faith that we can see the Spirit of God transform our lost family members, our lost friends, our lost brothers and sisters in Christ?

604.186 - 621.901 Bryce Crawford

Why is it that we write them off? Why is it that we hand them off and say, you know what? God can't do anything about it when James says the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Why isn't it that because we've been transformed by the love of God, we can't show that love of God to our brothers and sisters who are struggling and lost in their ways in such a way where we submit ourselves

622.361 - 644.197 Bryce Crawford

to a lifestyle of prayer on behalf of these people because prayer moves mountains and we're watching the faith of friendship actually move the heart of God to heal the paralytic. Their persistence in pursuing Jesus despite their circumstances, their faith and trust in Jesus' healing power and his lordship. They moved past the practical sense of, oh, there's too many people, we can't get to them.

644.277 - 665.061 Bryce Crawford

No, they were willing to do anything for their friend because they believed that Jesus Christ could transform their life. And if you believe that your friends are so lost and Jesus Christ can transform their life, then why don't you pray for them? Why don't you bring them to Jesus no matter the cost? Why don't you meet with Jesus and say, God, save my father, save my mother, save my friend.

665.922 - 682.952 Bryce Crawford

God can do it. And we can learn that from the faith of the paralytic friends. That man, even though the natural says, oh, he's paralyzed, there's nothing you can do. And even though the natural says, oh, there's too many people, we can't reach him. That didn't stop them from persistently pursuing God on behalf of their friend, despite their circumstances.

Chapter 6: What lesson does Jesus teach through the healing of the paralytic?

902.963 - 916.758 Bryce Crawford

And Levi made him a great feast in his house. And there was a large company of tax collectors and other reclining at the table with him. So everyone that society deemed as a sinner, everyone that the Pharisees said, hey, You guys are awful. Yeah, they were all sitting at the table with Jesus.

0

917.038 - 937.669 Bryce Crawford

And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at him, at his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus answered them, Those who are well have no need of a physician. But those who are sick, I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to me. Repent. Man, what a beautiful calling from Jesus Christ. Why would someone refuse?

0

938.29 - 956.658 Bryce Crawford

Why would someone refuse the healing of a doctor? Well, number one, they probably wouldn't think that they were sick. And that's what sin does to us. We convince ourselves that we're okay, that we're not in need of an outside source to help us. But blessed are the poor in spirit means that we recognize that we're spiritually bankrupt and that we can't help ourselves.

0

956.698 - 973.179 Bryce Crawford

We need someone greater than ourselves to help us. And Jesus here is saying, look, I didn't come for people who were prideful, who thought that they were helpful. Like I came for those who were recognized that they are in need of me. I came for those who are spiritually bankrupt and those who want to put their faith and trust in me.

0

974.585 - 992.155 Bryce Crawford

And then we're about to end this passage with a question about fasting. And then they said to him, the disciples of John fasted often and offer prayers. And so did the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink. So now they're saying, oh, look, we fast. And some other people's disciples fast, but you're not fasting right now. He's saying this because they're at dinner. The Pharisees are.

993.136 - 1013.351 Bryce Crawford

And Jesus said to them, can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? Now he's pointing it. He's making this specific to the time period here He's saying look when you look at a wedding feast, right? No one's fasting the feast is a specific Declaration and expression of joy when you're eating and dining with the bride and the bridegroom.

1013.391 - 1032.508 Bryce Crawford

It's a it's a beautiful time of celebration He's saying you're not gonna fast right there and he says the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them and then they will fast in those days and And he also told them a parable. No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new one and the piece from the new will not match the old.

1032.528 - 1052.032 Bryce Crawford

Now we're about to get the catchphrase. New wineskins. Here we're about to explain what that means. He says that no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst. The skins. And it will be spilled and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into new fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new. For he says... The old is good.

1052.072 - 1067.758 Bryce Crawford

Now look, this is what Jesus Christ is saying. He's saying, look, I'm not coming to abolish the Old Testament law. He's like, you're trying to hold a cage of rules over here. You're trying to hold a cage of religion around these guys. He says, look, I'm the new wineskins. I'm not coming to abolish it, but I've come to fulfill it.
