I also think that to the degree we are of self-absorption is the degree of our misery, just to being so self-absorbed. Whereas in the Buddhist teachings that I've studied, and granted, there are different schools of Buddhism, I suppose. The one I'm most familiar with is the Tibetan Buddhist teachings. That's all about the intention to benefit others. And I'm sure you've experienced this.
