Chapter 1: What recent developments are happening in Syria?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. Syrians around the world are celebrating the fall of the Assad regime. after rebels swept through the capital of Damascus overnight. MPR's Aryeh Batraoui spoke with a man who backed the opposition from Washington.
Mohammed Ghanem lobbied the White House and members of Congress over the years, pushing for tougher stances against the Syrian government. He says his most recent meeting was just days ago with White House officials to talk about the lightning advances by rebel forces across Syria after years of stalemate in the war.
Ghannam's advocacy meant he couldn't return to his hometown of Damascus for the past 14 years, or he'd face arrest and torture.
I'm euphoric because now my father, who is 86 years old, I've been very concerned about my father passing away without me being by his bedside. Now, finally, I have a chance to go back to Damascus and be with my dad.
Chapter 2: How has the Assad regime's fall impacted Syrians abroad?
He says his biggest concern now is Syrian factions getting the transition right toward democracy. Aya Batraoui, Empire News.
South Korea's ruling party says it will engineer the president's resignation. Empire's Anthony Kuhn reports this comes a day after parliament tried but failed to impeach the president for briefly putting South Korea under martial law last week.
Chapter 3: What is the political situation in South Korea?
Ruling People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon told reporters that an early and orderly departure for President Yoon Sung-yeol would minimize political instability. He said the prime minister and ruling party, and not Yoon, would handle state affairs until Yoon resigns. Han did not give a timeline or any legal basis for the move.
The main opposition party complained that nobody authorized the ruling party and prime minister to run the country, and their plan amounts to yet another insurrection. Meanwhile, prosecutors say they've booked Yoon as a suspect on charges of treason and abuse of power, and a special investigation is underway. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News, Seoul.
Chapter 4: What are the implications of President Yoon's potential resignation?
Mass deportation remains a key priority for President-elect Trump in his second term. In his first network interview since winning the election, Trump stood by his campaign promise to deport all those in the U.S. illegally. And Pierce, Luke Garrett has more.
Trump laid out his deportation plan during an interview on NBC News' Meet the Press with Kristen Welker.
Chapter 5: What are President-elect Trump's plans regarding immigration?
We're starting with the criminals, and we've got to do it. And then we're starting with others, and we're going to see how it goes. Who are the others? Others are other people outside of criminals.
Trump said families with both documented and undocumented members might all have to be deported if they choose to stick together. One exception in Trump's plan are the Dreamers, those brought to the U.S. illegally as children. Trump said he'd like to find a way to let them stay.
We have to do something about the Dreamers because these are people that have been brought here at a very young age, and many of these are middle-aged people now.
Trump also said he tried to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants, which is enshrined in the 14th Amendment. Luke Garrett, NPR News, Washington.
This is NPR News. The schools for college football's first-ever 12-team playoff have been set. The undefeated Oregon Ducks are the top overall seed, as NPR's Becky Sullivan reports.
Oregon is the only undefeated team in the top level of college football. It's their first year in the new bi-coastal Big Ten Conference, and the Ducks swept their way to a perfect season that included wins over three of the other teams in the playoffs, Ohio State, Penn State, and the No. 3 seed, Boise State. Rounding out the top four seeds are SEC champion Georgia and Big 12 champ Arizona State.
The other playoff teams are Texas, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Indiana, Southern Methodist, and Clemson. The 12-team playoff is part of a new era in college football that has seen schools leave their traditional conferences and players earn historic compensation from name, image, and likeness deals. The first round of the playoffs will take place later this month. Becky Sullivan in PR News.
Francis Ford Coppola, The Grateful Dead, Arturo Sandoval, and Bonnie Raitt will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Awards at the annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C. tonight. Queen Latifah is the host. There will be tribute performances from fellow artists, but their names are often kept secret from the recipients.
The tribute to the Grateful Dead will be poignant as the band's guitarist, Phil Lesch, died in October at the age of 84. President Biden hosted a reception for the honorees at the White House before the event and is attending the ceremony. The show airs later this month on CBS. I'm Janine Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
