Chapter 1: What are the key updates from President Trump?
Chapter 2: How many executive orders has Trump signed since returning to office?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. 100 days in, President Trump has rapidly hit multiple records since he returned to office. The Federal Register and American Presidency Project says he has signed 142 executive orders, far more than any other president since Franklin D. Roosevelt starting 1933.
Chapter 3: What is Trump's stance on the economy and trade?
As he prepared to leave the White House from Michigan a short time ago, Trump defended his actions since he took office.
Chapter 4: How are new tariffs affecting the auto industry?
The economy... would be certainly right up there, and I think it's doing great. We were losing billions and billions of dollars a day with trade, and now I have that down to a very low level, and soon we're going to be making a lot of money. We're going to be reducing people's taxes.
Although Trump's new tariffs have royal global markets stoked by uncertainty and escalating warnings of a recession, as automakers warned of higher prices and tougher sales today, Trump said that he would ease 25 percent tariffs on autos and auto parts. General Motors reported better than expected earnings for the past quarter.
Chapter 5: What are General Motors' recent earnings and forecasts?
However, tariff uncertainty is casting a shadow over that strong performance. NPR's Camila Dominovsky reports the company has told investors it cannot currently predict how well it will perform in the year overall.
Chapter 6: What should investors expect from GM's upcoming quarterly call?
GM CEO Mary Barra's regular quarterly call with investors has been pushed back to Thursday to wait and see what details are included in the partial tariff reprieve for automakers that President Trump is expected to sign. After that news is out, executives will update their forecasts for the rest of this year and take questions from Wall Street.
Overall, auto sales in the first quarter were strong, but one big reason is because shoppers moved up purchases to try to get ahead of tariffs, so more sales now could mean fewer sales later. Camila Dominovsky, NPR News.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, is touting its 100-day enforcement numbers on immigration. The agency says it has arrested 66,000 immigrants without papers and removed the vast majority of them. NPR's Jasmine Garz reports that is a sharp drop in crossings at the southern border.
One of the defining goals of the Trump administration has been a historic campaign of mass deportations. Officials for Immigration and Customs Enforcement say the focus has been on criminals who threaten public safety. They say three in four of the arrests performed in the first hundred days were immigrants with a criminal record.
They also said they've been zeroing in on worksite enforcement, arresting over 1,000 migrants working in the U.S. illegally, and proposing over a million dollars in fines against businesses who hire them. In addition, ICE says it has established over 400 new partnerships with local law enforcement so far this year. Jasmine Garst, NPR News, New York. It's NPR.
A child damaged a painting worth tens of millions of dollars by the American artist Mark Rothko at a museum in the Netherlands. NPR's Rob Schmitz with details.
The damage to the painting, titled Gray Orange on Maroon No. 8, happened during what a museum spokesperson called an unguarded moment when a child scratched the painting, leaving superficial marks visible in the unvarnished paint layer in the lower part of the painting. A spokesperson for Rotterdam's Museum, Boymans von Beunigen, says it's considering the next steps on how to repair the damage.
The abstract painting is estimated to be worth more than $50 million. The museum did not comment on who will be held liable for the damage to the 1960 painting, but it's previously billed visitors who have caused damage to artworks on display. Rob Schmitz, NPR News, Berlin.
Eurovision is fast approaching. In the coming weeks, performers from across Europe and beyond will compete in an annual international song contest in Switzerland.
