Chapter 1: What topics are covered in this Afternoon Update?
Countries threaten retaliation following Trump's new tariffs. The FBI busts another high-ranking MS-13 gang member. And New York City Mayor Eric Adams shakes up his re-election bid. I'm Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley with Georgia Howe. It's Thursday, April 3rd, and this is your Morning Wire Afternoon Update.
Chapter 2: How are countries responding to Trump's new tariffs?
Several countries are threatening retaliation in response to President Trump's new reciprocal tariffs policy. The European Union, as well as China, signaled they would hit U.S. exports with retaliatory tariffs. EU ambassadors are set to meet today to discuss the countermeasures. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant urged countries to think twice before ramping up their tariffs.
Here's what he told Fox News host Brett Baier.
My advice to every country right now is do not retaliate. Sit back, take it in. Let's see how it goes, because if you retaliate, there will be escalation. If you don't retaliate, this is the high water mark.
Chapter 3: What impact did the tariffs have on the stock market?
Market markets took a dive today after Trump's new tariffs, sparking fears of a global trade war. The Dow plunged over 1,300 points, down 3%. The S&P 500 fell 3.6%, while the Nasdaq tumbled nearly 4.7%. Consumer discretionary, energy, and tech sectors led the losses, while staples edged higher.
Chapter 4: What is Ford's new pricing strategy for customers?
Ford is letting everyday Americans pay like insiders. The automaker has launched a new From America for America campaign, offering U.S. shoppers employee pricing on most 2024 and 2025 Ford and Lincoln vehicles through June 2nd. That means customers can buy cars below the dealer invoice price, matching what Ford workers pay.
The deal excludes select models like the 2025 Expedition, Navigator, Raptor, and Super Duty trucks. Electric vehicle buyers will also get a free home charger and standard installation through the end of June.
This is kind of to call a little bit of a timeout. We've heard some uncertainty from our customers, and we want them to be assured that Ford, the most American auto company, is going to do right by them as our dealers. We make the most cars here. We employ the most. We export the most.
And so we here at Ford, we're in a good position to address customers' concern and give them a really great deal on a great vehicle.
Chapter 5: Who is the MS-13 leader recently arrested by the FBI?
The FBI has arrested a high-ranking MS-13 gang member accused of orchestrating 11 murders. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has the details.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said yesterday that Joel Vargas Escobar of El Salvador had been arrested on Tuesday and charged with racketeering conspiracy involving 11 murders. Vargas Escobar is in the U.S. illegally and was previously deported in 2018. He is suspected of being part of the command and control structure of MS-13 in Las Vegas and California.
Vargas Escobar was charged with racketeering conspiracy, two counts of murder in aid of racketeering, and multiple gun charges. He was detained by law enforcement on Long Island. Bondi said, quote, the American people are safer following the arrest of yet another MS-13 leader. She went on to say that this terrorist entered our country illegally and is accused of orchestrating 11 murders.
Under President Trump's leadership, we will not rest until this terrorist organization is completely dismantled and its members are behind bars.

Severe weather tore through multiple Midwestern states last night. At least six people have died in Tennessee, with additional injuries and flood damage reported in Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana. A massive tornado touched down near Lake City, Arkansas, but fortunately no deaths have been reported, despite significant damage to homes and businesses.
The governors of Indiana, Kentucky, and Missouri have issued states of emergency. The deadly storm system is expected to continue traveling northeast over the weekend with the Virginias, Pennsylvania, and New York in its path.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is staying in the race for re-election, but as an independent. Adams says he's skipping the Democratic primary to focus on November's general election. The announcement comes just one day after a federal judge dismissed his corruption case.
Adams has served as mayor since 2022 and was indicted on federal charges last September that were related to accepting payment and gifts from foreign nationals. Here's Adams in a video posted to X.
