History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Well, they're trying to stop him in all sorts of ways, but fortunately, they don't have the greatest minds on their side. I just saw AOC out ranting and raving about Elon Musk. It was entirely unconvincing. She's just crazy, right?
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Well, Victor, let's go ahead and take a break and come back and talk a little bit about the 16th Amendment. Stay with us, and we'll be right back. Welcome back to the Victor Davis Hanson Show. You can catch Victor at his social media on X. He is at VD Hanson and on Facebook, it's Hanson's Morning Cup.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
So, Victor, the 16th Amendment is allowing the United States to have an income tax, something that the country resisted all the way for 100 years. It had been tariffs as the means to earn or excise tax for the federal government to earn its income. earn money to pay for it. And so now they were instituting an income tax.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And I'm kind of curious why 100 years later, and I know that we can see some resemblance to Donald Trump turning to tariffs and trying to fix our terrible income tax problem. But what are your thoughts on 16?
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
All right. Let's go ahead and take a break and come back to talk a little bit about things in the news. The funny or facetious and then some sad events occurred this week. So stay with us. We'll be right back. Welcome back to the Victor Davis Hanson show. So, Victor, could I just ask you one thing?
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Because you were talking about Donald Trump and you said he's very smart and he's got a business cunning. And so but recently he's adopted the facade of the sort of mellow, contented old man. I love that. And he's sort of put Elon out there as that. that target to take all of the hard shots for him.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Do you think he admires Elon in a way of somebody who kind of sees himself in Elon when he was that age?
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Well, Victor, let's turn to some good reading and good listening. And I'm being completely facetious for our listeners. We have in terms of listening, I guess Gavin Newsom is starting his own podcast and he's calling it. This is Gavin Newsom. And I was wondering your thoughts on such a narcissistic thing.

I have a feeling it's going to be quickly dubbed, this is not Gavin Newsom's show.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
I like that Trump gave him, or it seems to be giving, he's going to give him money, but he's not going to let Newsom and his cronies have control of it.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
So, Victor, I wanted to start off this, a lot of questions because they've been sort of piling up in my agenda on health care and just give you a mosaic. And then you can tell me your thoughts on what's going on with health care under the Trump administration.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Well, I promised good reading as well. Apparently, Jake Tapper, a CNN interviewer, has written or is writing a book called Original Sin. President Biden's decline, its cover up and this disastrous choice to run again and his disastrous choice to run again.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And this is the same Jake Tapper that, as a lot of shows have been showing this week, castigated Laura Trump for having suggested, I think in 2020, that Biden was in decline. And so I was wondering your thoughts.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Trump has passed or signed an executive order that is trying to press for, I don't know how successful they'll be, transparency in pricing with health care providers. Elon Musk has... started into finding all the fraud, which everybody knows exists in our public health care providers. And so he's hot on the trail of that. There's been a measles outbreak in Texas.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And then finally, polls coming out that increasing numbers of Americans are becoming a little bit worried about what's going to happen to Medicare and Medicaid. And I wondered... your thoughts on the healthcare situation in general?
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
I've never heard it better said. So thank you, Victor, for making sure our listeners do not buy the book and that I was being entirely facetious.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
No, I don't see Jake Tapper having an audience that want to buy that book. But let's turn to the last topic, which is the border. And Issues and Insights has a table, a study done of crossings at the border for all the way from Trump's first administration through today in January. And it shows that January crossings at this time for Trump is at 60K or 60,000.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And that last year with Joe Biden, it was at 180,000. So Trump has cut that by one third, one third of what Joe Biden. But it also showed that Donald Trump's in his first term, all of his January's were below even his 60,000 this year. So there was a consistency among his Republican in his Republican administration.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And so what the insider insights and issues wanted to say was that all the claims of the left That the Republicans were standing in the way of Joe Biden.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Yeah. We're here now shown to be a lie.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
And by the way... They're harboring criminals, though.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Yeah. Well, Victor, we're at the end of the show, but a tragedy happened this week. Gene Hackman was found dead at 95 in his house, and so too his wife, who was about 60, 67 or so years old. She was 30 years younger. So it is a mystery what happened to them. At this point, we don't know how long the bodies were there. We don't know how they died. And so we'll wait on that.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
But I was wondering about your appraisal of his career, Gene Hackman's career.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
I think the implication is they might have hit falling.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show

The Victor Davis Hanson Show

Yes, I remember him in The Firm. That was that Tom Cruise movie. He played a good part in there. He did. He was a very sympathetic character.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show

Yeah, it seems like Gene Hackman was just in hundreds of supporting actors.

The Victor Davis Hanson Show

I was wondering your thoughts on this.

History of Income Tax Amendment 16 and News of the Week
Hello and welcome to the Victor Davis Hanson Show. This is our Saturday edition where we look at something a little bit different in the middle section. And this week, Victor is going to be talking about the 16th Amendment and income tax is added to government powers in the United States. But first, let's listen to a few messages and we'll talk about a few news stories after that. Stay with us.

A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Well, Victor, I want to turn and stay on Doge for just a second, because there was an interview on CBS's 60 Minutes of two people from USAID, or so they presented themselves as such, although one of them was a contractor and not an employee. And that is Christina Dry was the woman that was being interviewed. And they were presenting a case of this is unjust. These workers are losing.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
She didn't make the case for valuable jobs, but said they were losing their jobs and their livelihood, and it was all Doge's fault. And so CBS, the whole interview, obviously, was trying to give a black eye to Doge itself and Elon Musk. And I was wondering your thought.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Well, let's now then turn to Donald Trump, and he's done something extraordinary this week, earlier this week, and that is to hand the Ukraine a contract that agrees to American rights to resources in the Ukraine. to the tune of about 50%, if I'm understanding things right, which is a lot of Ukrainian resources and a lot of money. And Zelensky is, of course, shocked. And he's so shocked.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
First off, he's not going to sign this contract. And second, he's refused to go to Saudi Arabia for the talks on peace with Russia.

The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Speaking, I mean, you went into Obama and he had all sorts of red lines. Donald Trump put up a red line for Hamas to get the hostages back last Saturday, and they didn't manage to do that. So Trump's red line is failing. But I was wondering your thoughts. They have promised six hostages this Saturday.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
It'll work just fine. No worries. So, Victor, just very quickly, we just recently had that jet turnover. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the Toronto airliner that came in for a landing. We're having so many air crashes and air incidents, I guess I should say.

The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
I take lots of supplements, but it's been really good for the last few months. that's Field of Greens. Victor, let's turn to Germany. And there was a recent 60 Minutes piece, once again, I don't know why I'm into the 60 Minutes pieces, but that German law enforcement is conducting raids on homes of people that are guilty of hate speech. And 60 Minutes went along with them, and they seem to be
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
celebrating this invasion of homes on the basis of somebody insulting another person on the Internet. They said the Germans that were representing Germany said that it was worse to it's not allowed to insult in public. But since that's not. A long lasting record insulting somebody on the Internet is worse. And so they are arresting and generally fining people.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
But you could also be sent to prison in Germany. And it just sounds a little reminiscent of cracking down on speech in general, the end of free speech in Germany, which is dangerous.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Yes, they seem to be onto a case in Germany where a politician was insulted, they said, online for four years, and then he got shot in the head. And so that was their central impetus. But they didn't really prove that him getting shot in the head wouldn't have happened without.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Well, Germany, the way you describe it sounds like what the plans that Pol Pot had for Cambodia or even Mao in China, get rid of the intellectuals and turn everybody into peasants and put them out in the countryside. And Germany seems to be doing it without a Pol Pot. Yeah.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Yeah, the same thing. Well, Victor, let's go ahead and take a break and come back and talk a little bit about Egypt and the settlement after Hamas has gone from the Gaza Strip. Stay with us and we'll be right back. Welcome back to the Victor Davis Hanson show.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Victor, so I actually had planned this earlier, but Egypt, if we turn to the ending of this war in the Gaza Strip and the final collapse of Hamas, which is all Israel is going to. be happy with. Trump's been encouraging Middle Eastern states, and Egypt, of course, has stepped up.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
But I'm a little skeptical about Egypt helping the Gaza Strip back into the modern world, since they were the ones that were helping Hamas with all sorts of weapons coming through that Sinai region, that border. I was wondering your thoughts on this Egypt thing.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
No, and Egypt could never help to make that happen.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Well, the last thing, Victor, I wanted to talk about was that the British Prime Minister Starmer has said that he's willing to put British troops in the Ukraine if necessary. But what I was wondering with this is not so much whether they'll do it or not do it, not on the edge of my seat about that, but whether or not
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
The Europeans, as the Americans step back from so much influence in NATO and expect the Europeans to step up and work with each other, I think the Europeans don't really trust each other. And they don't really trust that they can work in an alliance together that's equal, that they're always sort of afraid each other's going to stab the other behind their back, you know. So I was wondering...
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
It allowed a child sex ring to continue without trying to stop it.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
While you were talking, you reminded me of something. Trump seems to be turning to tariff policy to rely on income in a sense. And it seems like a return to the 19th century because that's all the federal government had was tariff policy. They didn't have an income tax.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
But in association with that, in our modern day and Trump turning and leaning on tariffs, you know, partly, as you've suggested, just to influence diplomacy, but perhaps also to make money. The Doge has suggested, and this is my last thing, that perhaps there will be $5,000 going back to each taxpayer, which would be really cool, but I'm not sure. $5,000 to do what again? Yeah.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
I return to taxpayers once they've found all this waste and fraud in the government.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Yeah. OK, Victor, let's go on then to a lot that the Trump administration is doing. So Doge is out looking and its targets are the big things that Americans are worried about because they're sort of what do they call that? Entitlement programs rather than discretionary spending. And that's the Social Security Administration, the IRS. And
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Well, Victor, we're at the end of our show today, and we want to thank our audience for listening and you for all the wisdom.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy

The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
Elon Musk has come out to say that there are millions of people over the age of 100 that are receiving checks. The IRS seems to feel that there's going to be a bunch of layoffs this coming week and that the feds fired a large part of the, I think it was just federal employees last week, just to show a few of the things that The advice of Doge seems to be getting done.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
And I was wondering your thoughts on Doge's progress so far with all this information.
The Victor Davis Hanson Show
A Swing and a Hit: DOGE and Diplomacy
