But I don't know if I ever will. But here's what I'm not going to do. There will be no co-host for the first three months. Now, there kind of will be with the football grump because I've contracted him to be on for draft month. All the draft previews, the draft recaps, the draft live streams, the UDFA pods, they will be with grump. So he's going to be a part of that. But he's not the co-host.

But I need to get through three months of putting together a business before I add anybody with significant commitment. But again, ideally, I would like to have a co-host. the bare basics of what happened and what the future looks like. But I kind of want to talk about what really happened with John Boy. You know, I started the Giants Nation podcast with Danny King in 2019 in January. And then we joined on with John Boy Media where, you know, they were first getting rolling with their Yankee stuff and they, you know, we turned it into Talking Giants.

Did it for free for the first year, obviously. And then went full-time on a smaller salary in September of 2020. And a salary that I'm still extremely grateful for, and I always will be. In that year, 2020, we added Justin Pennick.

uh with danny king you know going away from school you know we kept him on as a blogger and stuff um hell you know we even had another guy anthony tomena who you know never forget him he worked with us he did draft stuff with me and he ended up um passing away sadly um you know we always you know love and miss anthony uh and in 2022 or you know very beginning of 2022 justin and i got new deals justin may have got his a little later because they were kind of a mess with some stuff um

But I took less money, but not a ton less money to stay in Florida. And I was very happy about it, right? Was not complaining, was extremely happy.

had a really good relationship with john boyd during these times we saw eye to eye on a ton of things justin and i did the show um justin edited quite a bit um but i also you know paid somebody out of pocket to get the shows on youtube early on um you know while again still being a full-time employee and i was you know ghetto editing my videos staying up all night like again i viewed this as my baby and i truly think it is you know the 2021 season

I would stay up until 4 and 5 a.m. on Monday nights doing the O-line report because I didn't get the film until midnight. And then just to get the film, I'd have to go to the NFL Euro Game Pass because they ruined the regular one. And so it would be released at midnight or whatever. I would have to screen record the entire film file and then do the O-line report.

So it would be up until 4 to 6 a.m. in the morning doing the O-line report.

uh because i didn't get the film until then and then i would wake up at 7 a.m work on the film review get the film review done and do the mailbag pod later that day and which i would go through and select all the questions right i did you know every single free agent and draft breakdown pre and post um to try and grow that channel i did reaction videos and news uh you know after news and games you know

I was given two contract offers by John Boy Media. One to move to New York and one to stay in Florida, you know, where I live, obviously. Similar to, you know, the dynamic at the end of 2021, where they gave me two offers, but very different.

I ran all the social media accounts from start to finish, except for a two month period where they would post our tweets onto the Instagram. I would send them the tweets that I had done. They would post them on Instagram and then they complained that it was too much. And I just like, all right, you know what? Screw it. Give it back to me. That's fine.

As long as I know it's getting done because it wasn't getting done. Um, you know, I did mock drafts, you know, obviously those have a lot of editing help with whether it was Julian or Jeff, you know, but I also, you know, I paid out of pocket for Danny King to run the game day social accounts and I booked every guest.

I did more episodes on my own and, but I never complained about the dynamic of it because I was happy. I love talking giants, but I viewed it as my own, right? This is not, you know, an ESPN show or a TV show where you go on it and if you leave, they replace you and it stays the same most likely. Again, what I'm not okay with in all this is it's not the offers.

It's not the offers that bother me, but that's not the reason why I'm mad. It feels like they're taking my baby from me. I don't care if they gave me those offers, fired me, or called me mean names. The whole world knows who Talking Giants should belong to. It was mine before I joined John Boy. It was mine when I did it for free while working full-time.

It was mine when it was built up into something good. But again, I will let the people decide on what should happen to it. And again, it's not like they gave me this big offer and I turned it down. Jake who was like the number two at the company was you know the you know like sidekick to John Boy when they started the company reached out to me he's kind of he's on I don't know exactly what his title is but he's the person that I deal with he reached out to me a couple weeks ago asking if I was interested in moving to New York because I wasn't you know I didn't take the offer to move to New York in 2021 and I told him it depends on the numbers right I'm not going to

You know, they didn't want me in New York to grow Talking Giants or NFL coverage. But it would have helped in theory, right? I can do more events. We can do more streaming stuff, etc. There's ways it could have helped. The issue is that they want me there to be a part of their office culture and their warehouse games where they play wiffle ball and, you know, and cricket or whatever.

And it would have made me being up there would have made football coverage worse. They would have had me stuck in the warehouse every Thursday playing blitz ball. It was literally in like, and I'm not just guessing that it was literally in the contract that they offered me to move up there. And they've also done it to Justin too.

Um, and again, this is not taking into account the fact that I've been making less money due to the state income taxes, then having higher cost of living uprooting my entire life. A month after getting medical, uh, married being removed from my family's lives in critical years where we're, you know, my siblings are having kids, you know, you know, I plan to maybe have kids.

in the next couple of years, like that's crazy to think I would jump at that. And the NFL coverage didn't work because one, and I'm not saying it would have worked otherwise, but one, it was my distant second priority. I don't know what priority it was for Justin, but I actually think Justin did kind of make it a priority. And it was like Chris Rose's eighth priority.

You know, like it wasn't even his first football priority, right? He did work for the NFL, you know, network and it's not his fault. Like why would he prioritize that? Like he'd be crazy to. But they just refused to hire anyone to make it their first priority. And once we accepted that, though, that's when I was like, all right, bring Justin on football today. Let's try and do this.

And me and Justin went in. Like, we did team profiles and projections on every team, except for the last one, because... Whatever. But we, like, and it honestly ruined, like, June and July for us. It sucked. Or July and August. Like, it sucked doing all this. We were doing long episodes, recapping the games, doing long previews, you know, doing a midweek show.

And I actually thought it was somewhat growing. And, like, we were putting together a good show and working our asses off, right? Like, on Sunday. So, let you go through a schedule of this season early on because it changed. Yeah. When the change is what messed it up. Let's just slow. The Giants play at 1 o'clock on Sunday. So we got to do all our recap and stuff like that.

Justin sometimes would have to be traveling back from the game. He did the tailgates in the morning. So we would do all the Talking Giants coverage, and then we'd try and watch Sunday Night Football while taking notes. And as soon as Sunday Night Football would end, I would watch two condensed games until about 1 o'clock or so in the morning, taking notes.

Then we'd wake up at 7 in the morning and just watch games all the way through 11. Again, we wanted to have a good show. If we can't have all this supplemental content or someone who's really growing the channel with... That being the number one priority, we at least wanted to watch the games and not just be going off of stats and stuff. And we were busting our ass to preview.

just say no like first of all i don't want to move to new york i just got married my family is here i grew up here my church is here my whole support system is here and you know i like to be a support system for other people but i wanted to at least hear them out and and the fact that there are advantages of being up there for this job although they were not really wanting me up there for those advantages let me get a drink of water

I thought it was actually a good product. Did I think it was going to grow a ton right away? No, because there wasn't really much that was being done outside of that to promote it. But I think it was growing and it was doing a good show. And then they nuked it. In October, they were saying the episodes are too long, it's not growing fast enough, blah, blah, blah.

Even though it was growing compared to what it was before. And they said it is mandatory that these episodes are less than 30 minutes. Like not just, hey, let's keep it around 30 minutes. Like if this episode is at 32 minutes, the editor is instructed to cut out two minutes and one second to make it less than 30 minutes. And the views plummeted. And it became a shitty show.

And at that point, I just knew that football coverage was never going to work with advice like that. Um, you know, and they kept on using the line when every week we talk about bringing somebody on to do football stuff of, Oh, you know, Jake would say me and John boy started talking baseball, uh, while doing talking Yanks. And that's true. But the reality is that John boy did the breakdowns.

Um, and that's what got that rolling. And hell, if I, you know, if I were able to find something that was anywhere near as successful as that, why the hell would I want to do it for you guys? Like I could just make all the money on my own doing it that way.

they also in that same meeting tried to take our patreon away and we refused um we had it from the beginning um and they knew about it in fact i asked john boy for you know advice on on how to do it because they did it with talking yanks um but they're basically they started their sub stack and like well we can't let all the other creators do patreons it's been a gray area blah blah blah

and before they even like said much they just said like we're not well i'm not letting you uh take this you know they had a meeting with us that had me and justin not feeling so great earlier in the year and it's like this is our security right if you guys let us go tomorrow this is our security the patreon and we're not letting it go and i understand the fact that you know they can't just let all their creators have patreons and stuff but what they do do is let the creators keep the ad money from their youtube

The offer to move to New York was $3,000 more per year. And I won't get into what my salary was, but asking me to move myself and my wife and leave our entire lives behind was shocking for that amount of money. I mean, forget the fact that the difference in state taxes is more than $3,000. I'm actually making less money just state taxes.

but you want me to move my wife less than a month after being married to New York for less net pay, before we talk about cost of living or anything, away from my family, my support system, add two hours minimum of commute to my day on a job that you don't clock in and out of.

A lot of times they last as bottom half quarterbacks or top tier backups. But if he had the elite processing and anticipation that people talked about, I would say, hey, I don't need him to have the best arm.

So the offensive line wasn't good, but I thought he made it worse at times. People will look at the Nebraska game. The Nebraska game is not my worry with Shador. No, it does. Like, as a pass protector, like, I'm confident in him at guard. And guard has become one of the, I feel like, some of the harder positions to project to the NFL. And sometimes they end up being good, but their first two years struggle a lot. So it's a question of, like, you know, Kenyon Green and Zion Johnson, right? Those are two guys that I love, both of them.

And both are struggling, right? Kenyon Green is going to get fixed by the Eagles and it's going to drive me crazy. But it's just one of those positions. But with him, I feel like the guys who have had quicker success are the guys who move outside in into the NFL. And that's what Jonah is, right? Like he's going to play guard. Like you mentioned, he's extremely stout. And he's a controlled player.

Like in space, as a puller, moving to the second level does well. Like you said, in those pass sets, not going to be doing vertical sets at guard. I might have a note. Good blocker. My way to describe him is as a savvy wide receiver. My first bullet point is savvy wide receiver with size and effort to carve an NFL career. I do think the speed is an issue to separate just naturally. Even though, again, like you said, he's quick. He's not all twitched up, but he's quick. He works smooth, quick transitions and has effective releases.

He uses a bunch of different ones. And Steve Smith talked about this. I don't know when. I think if Vinny Tessaverde got signed with the Panthers and the thing told him, he was like, if it's an in-breaker, finish on the inside. If it's an out-breaker, finish on the outside. Do what you got to do. And that's Pat Bryant, right? He understands what route he's running. He knows where he needs to be.

And that's a quarterback's, you know, a big thing for a quarterback, especially when you're not a number one wide receiver. or someone that the offense is going to be planning for, is are you going to be in the right place at the right time? Can I trust you? Can I get to the backside of progression and trust that you're going to be in the right place?

That's the reason why Jalen Hyatt can't get on the playing field. It's not just, you know, oh, he can't run this route. It's like, no, you don't know where he's going to be, and he's not good enough to put on the front side or put the number one in progression consistently. So, yeah, he has great hands, fights to get the ball, makes those tough grabs on the sideline.

He's going to be a guy who draws a lot of penalties too because of his ability to kind of fight back to the ball on misplaced throws. So savvy wide receiver. We talked pre-show. Never going to be your number one guy, but he's someone that you can trust. And I think where he's better than Hodges, though, is the ability to make those plays down the field. Where Hodges, despite his side, never really made those contested or tough grabs, Pat Bryant really does do that. And that's something that can elevate him to having a better career than a guy like Hodges.

Yeah, and a guy for his size. He has that inside-out flex, which is big for Brian Dibble, who likes to run different concepts out of different formations and move guys around. He's someone that you can put in the slot. Not going to be running juke routes all day, but he's someone that you can line up there and, despite his size, make a play or two. All right. Is a guy that I really like. And I think we may differ a little bit on this one. And that's Notre Dame's cornerback. Benjamin Morrison. 6 foot 193 pounds. 30 and a quarter inch arms. He has a hip injury. And that may be why he's not viewed. The way he once was viewed. And he's got a showcase on April 21st. The Monday before the draft. Where he's going to work out for NFL teams.

And maybe that will make a decision. But ignoring that, I love the Benjamin Morrison film. You know, he's given up less than 50% completion percentage the last three years. He doesn't give a lot of yards per catch. You know, he has nine interceptions and 12 pass breakups and 31 career games. Again, it doesn't give those big plays. He pisses off wide receivers.

I mean, he's just grumpy. He plays the position like a wide receiver, right? Like he understands where these passing concepts are going. He knows where to key in on quarterbacks and what they're looking at. and it's just like his ball skills are not just, oh, he can go up and make a nice grab. He does. Or not that, oh, he can close in on a ball and break it up.

He gave up 17 catches in 12 games, 33 targets, but only 141 yards. He gave up eight yards per catch. I think that's the best out of the group that we're looking at when it comes to that. He had five pass breakups, didn't give up any touchdowns. He was an imposing force for that FSU defense. You watch Cam Ward film.

I don't think Cam Ward played bad against FSU, but FSU was the one team that basically stopped him from doing the superpower stuff that he was able to do, and I think Azaria Thomas was a part of that. I thought that was a game where Cam Ward played quick game well, and I feel like it was like, okay, he can play controlled if a defense is trying to take this stuff away.

It's just I've never seen a – not never, but it's very rare where you see a corner grump. We talk about turning the head where it's like he just knows when that ball is coming, and he's able to telegraph it from miles away, and that's why he's able to get his hands on the football so much because – He knows, okay, the receiver's breaking here. You can tell in his game how much he understands what they're running, right? Like, he cheats his leverage so much, right? Like, he will straight up, it looks like he's lined up on the wrong guy how much he'll cheat. And he's like, I know a dig's coming here, so I'm going to cheat inside.

and these wide receivers are trying to run a dig route, and they just have nowhere to go because he's just standing there like a wall being like, go here, because this is where you're trying to go. And even if they take those vertical, well, he's got the quickness, the loose hips to turn and run with them as well.

And then in zone, you know, like you again, another UCF play where KJ Jefferson, they run post wheel and he's supposed to carry the wheel and KJ Jefferson gets pressured and he just bails out on that. Right. Where, again, this may be like a difference of college and NFL or an NFL QB, you know, makes a guy miss and sees the wheel wide open and throws it. But he knows. He's throwing the underneath.

He's throwing the flare out from the running back or whatever it was and just pounces and is able to intercept it. So when you put him in zone coverage, his IQ is just top notch. You watch the man put coverage and fall in love with him, but the zone coverage is just where he just understands everything that that offense is trying to run, and he's taking advantage of it pretty consistently. Yeah.

Yeah, that's just where you see, okay, this is why this guy's on a different level. Now, I'll say this. He's not a perfect corner. He has some weaknesses, right? The slants. He gives up the slants, right? Because he's looking to stop other routes, and he gives up those plays. The guy from Stanford got him on that one.

And I think the thing that shows up most consistently that I'm not too worried about because his ball skills will make quarterbacks pay if they try this too often, when he's going up against a bigger receiver at 188 pounds, there's just a lot of times where they make tough grabs, right?

I view him more in the Derek Stingley type of player where he's going to give up like 400 yards a season. He might have a season where he gives up 600, 650, but he's going to have pass breakups. He's going to get interceptions, and he's going to make quarterbacks pay for targeting him too often.

It's a weird thing. I think Richard Sherman kind of was living proof of this where if you're physical all the time, the referees are not going to call penalties on you. Where if you're not physical like that and then you do get grabby on a third down, well, they're going to give it to you. He's vulnerable to hitches and ends like a lot of corners are, but you put him in zone coverage, he does the two-man concept, he's going to wash the quarterback's eyes. He's going to try and bait him into the high and take that away and then close down on the low if he ends up going with that. He's just someone who's never going to be out of place.
