Chapter 1: Who is Dr. Amie Horniman and what is her expertise?

15.732 - 36.166 Dylan Gemelli

All right, everybody, welcome back to the Dylan Gibelli podcast. I hope you're ready to have some fun today because my guest and I like to get into some pretty good conversations that are extremely fun. And she's going to bring a ton of education. She is a functional medicine doctor, but is best known as the thyroid fixer. And she is a good friend of mine.

36.226 - 41.569 Dylan Gemelli

And I'm so excited for our conversation today. So my friends, this is Dr. Amy Horniman. Welcome, Amy.

43.322 - 45.598 Dr. Amie Horniman

Dylan, how are you doing? I'm excited to be here.

0

46.169 - 50.951 Dylan Gemelli

I am so happy to have you. Every conversation we have is, it's fun. I know.

0

51.091 - 54.032 Dr. Amie Horniman

It is. It is. We go down so many rabbit holes.

54.592 - 75.091 Dylan Gemelli

It is. I will warn everybody now, if you're sensitive, we are a couple of sailors here on how we talk sometimes. So if you're sensitive, you might want to just stop being weak about it. All right. So, you know, one of the things that I really get into is a lot of wellness, a lot of hormone optimization, a lot of panels, everything.

75.171 - 96.082 Dylan Gemelli

But one of the things that I'm severely lacking and I am disappointed in myself and I can't wait for your expertise is all about thyroid. But I want to, before we get into that, I want to talk about your background. I know that you were a competitor before. Everybody's kind of got a cool story that gets them into health and everything. So what's your story?

96.262 - 100.725 Dylan Gemelli

Why did you, and why did you pick the thyroid and why did you get into functional medicine?

Chapter 2: What led Dr. Horniman to focus on thyroid health?

101.277 - 122.089 Dr. Amie Horniman

Yeah. So like you said, many of us are somehow in this health arena because of shit that we went through in our own lives. Right. And my story is no different. So this goes back 20 some years ago. I was competing in figure competitions. I was doing fitness modeling and I had done plenty of these. And I did the whole diet down procedure.

0

122.369 - 144.447 Dr. Amie Horniman

I was not walking around like a little tiny stick figure with boobs that just had to diet for two weeks. Like I had to diet for the full 12 to 14 weeks every single time. Even if it was a photo shoot, I would prep that same way. And so, you know, I knew how my body was supposed to respond. I'd done it plenty of times. And this one show I was getting ready for was the MPC Pittsburgh, bigger show.

0

145.527 - 161.281 Dr. Amie Horniman

And I was working with a coach because we can't do this alone. So working with a coach, sending him my progress picks and my weight every week. And this show I'm getting ready for, I'm doing all the things and the scale keeps going up. And every time I get on the scale, it's going up. Well, you know, when you first start,

0

162.122 - 180.354 Dr. Amie Horniman

And you're looking at the scale, you're like, all right, well, I just don't have it dialed in yet. Maybe I need to restrict a little bit more. Maybe I'll kick it up to three times a day at the gym instead of twice a day. You know, I'm doing my fasted morning cardio. Maybe I'll throw an extra one in in the evening or whatever. So you start overthinking and overdoing naturally.

0

180.434 - 203.191 Dr. Amie Horniman

But even that didn't work. And every single time I stepped on that scale, it went up. And I mean that. 25 pounds total. That's when I stopped getting on. I am certain that it went higher than that. But at that point, I didn't want to know anymore. I knew I was out of the show. I knew my body was rebelling against me. And I really just wanted answers as to why.

203.932 - 221.914 Dr. Amie Horniman

So I started going to doctors because that's what we do when there's something wrong with our body. We all do it. So I went to my first doctor, and I say first because there were many more to follow. First doctor who told me, and I don't know the tests that were ran back then. I wasn't in this space.

221.954 - 244.921 Dr. Amie Horniman

I didn't know what to ask for, and that's really why I try to educate people and drill it into them. No, you have to ask for a specific test. So I got some testing done. Yes, they tested my thyroid. They said you're normal. I'm using air quotes here. Normal and everything is fine. So I left there. I'm like, no, I'm not normal. I'm not fine. I'm going to go for this second opinion thing.

245.382 - 258.423 Dr. Amie Horniman

So I kept going. Went to another doctor. Was told, well, you know what? Your labs look good. It's all in your head. Just eat less and exercise more. And at that point, I'm thinking, oh, my God, I'm going to die if I eat less and exercise more. Right. I was already restricting.

258.463 - 282.778 Dr. Amie Horniman

I was in full show contest prep mode and just really could not restrict any further without completely starving myself and shutting my body down. So I kept going, went to doctor number three, four, five, and six. All of them dismissed me. They all told me I was normal. Everything is fine. Now I'm rushing through this story, but the reality was I was really depressed.

Chapter 3: What are the differences between T3 and T4 hormones?

1881.3 - 1904.015 Dr. Amie Horniman

And then you have the trigger. So yeah, the theory is if you kick out a leg of a three-legged stool, the stool can't stand. So we have to remove one of those legs. Well, we can't remove the genetic predisposition. We can heal the gut. Really controlling of stressors. I mean, are you going to be like, you know what? I'm not going to get pregnant because I don't want to risk having Hashimoto's. No.

0

1904.195 - 1923.492 Dr. Amie Horniman

And you're still going to go through perimenopause. None of us are aging like Benjamin Button. So you're still going to lose hormones at some point in time. So really, I mean, how do we avoid it? It is said that, yes, you can do gut healing protocols. You can remove gluten. You can remove all of the toxins coming into the body. And that absolutely can help.

0

1924.653 - 1928.295 Dr. Amie Horniman

But honestly, in my opinion, it's like if it's coming, it's coming and we deal with it.

0

1928.956 - 1933.018 Dylan Gemelli

Thought so. Well, okay. So is it a curable disease or is that a lifelong thing?

0

1934.479 - 1957.461 Dr. Amie Horniman

Yes and no. So we can push Hashimoto's into remission. If we catch it really early, we can actually do things to keep people off of thyroid hormone replacement. Not that that's a big deal if you have to go on it like we talked about earlier. But yes, we can catch it early and possibly push it into remission. But then at the same time, it's like, I just tell people like, it's okay. So it's okay.

1957.501 - 1983.144 Dr. Amie Horniman

You got to die. We can take care of it though. We can make it so that you don't even realize that you have it. I take my thyroid medication every day. I joke that I live in optimization land. I'm good. I'm fine. I'm living life. It's good. So we can bring people into that world of not suffering, not dealing with all of the hypo symptoms. They can live a fantastic life. It just takes that proper

1983.945 - 1999.614 Dr. Amie Horniman

Thyroid hormone replacement, i.e. medication, that proper dose. And I get this question too a lot. Well, what is your favorite medication? So I say the one that's going to work for you. Right. And the combination that's going to work for you in the dose that's going to work for you. And that's my favorite one.

2000.034 - 2021.486 Dylan Gemelli

Yes. Yes. It's all subjective. And there is, it really comes down to that. And that's just like in all aspects of life with pretty much everything that we do. I think it's important. And I'm glad you stressed that. Here's something that I'm wondering. In terms of side effects and definition, I think, and just to keep it simple, so we've got hyper and hypoactive thyroid.

2021.606 - 2032.855 Dylan Gemelli

One is overactive, one is underactive. Are the symptoms and side effects similar or are they differentiating factors there? And then is one more treatable or better or worse than the other one?
