Description

Only a couple days remain before the NHL breaks for the Four Nations Faceoff and Roy, David and Ethan are here to get you ready. Then, Billy Lindsay of the Florida Panthers Radio Network and NHL Network joins the show to discuss the Four Nations, how jacked up guys are to play in the tournament, the crazy Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference, and his legendary call of the Panthers winning the Stanley Cup. In the final segment, the boys run through the week that was for the Florida Panthers and Roy shares his thoughts on the Panthers visit to The White House. Learn more about your ad choices. Chapter 1: What are the slapshots, winners, and fails of the week in the NHL?

00:52 - 01:00 Roy

It's the hockey show. That's Dave. That's Ethan. Rosie is not here. She's at the Super Bowl. That's it. All right. So let's go to slap shots really quickly. Let's go. All right. Hot takes.

0

01:00 - 01:22 David Samson

Dave. Hot takes. All right. Well, hi. Welcome to the show. Hey. Good to be here. How you doing? My hot take. Earlier this week, Ricard Raquel and the Penguins, they were playing the Devils. He had one goal disallowed right there that he kicked in the net. Yeah. That goal did not count. Later in the game, he accidentally kicked the puck in his own net. That goal did count. Yeah.

0

01:22 - 01:29 David Samson

So my hot take is if it's not in the crease and it's not dangering to the goalie with you kicking your feet around, why can't that be legal?

0

01:30 - 01:32 Roy

Because it's an own goal. No, no.

0

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

Why can't a player try to kick the puck in from anywhere on the ice? If it's legal to deflect it off his skate, why can't he just kick it? If it's a safety thing outside of the crease, that's fine. And this comes from a goalie. What's the problem? It's not soccer.

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

You should have to use your stick. Yeah, it's not soccer. You should have to use your stick to push the puck. I'm not saying you should try to, but I'm saying it shouldn't be illegal.

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

You can't bat the puck in with your glove either. It can bounce off your torso. It can bounce off your leg. Well, it's a little different. I think hand-eye coordination. You can't make that sweeping motion. No.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

I don't know, man. I think it might be a little fun.

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

That's the other thing. Fun. I mean, you can deflect it off the skate. Yeah, that's legal. So why can't you just kick it in?

Chapter 2: Why was Ryan Hartman suspended for 10 games?

Chapter 3: What are the arguments for changing own goal rules in hockey?

02:01 - 02:03 David Samson

I don't know, man. I think it might be a little fun.

0

02:03 - 02:08 Roy

That's the other thing. Fun. I mean, you can deflect it off the skate. Yeah, that's legal. So why can't you just kick it in?

0

02:08 - 02:15 Ethan Podolsky

Here's my question. In soccer, if you score an own goal, you get credited for a goal. Why don't they do that in hockey?

0

02:15 - 02:21 David Samson

Well, you get credited for an own goal. It doesn't count towards your goal total. No, I know that. It's an error. It's in the E column.

0

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

No, but on the stat column, it comes up like Carter Verhage in one of the Rangers games last year. He shot the puck and it went in off a stick. He got credited for the goal. That's not how it should be. Carter Verhage should not get credit for that goal. The defender should be credited for an own goal. That's not how it works, though. In soccer, it works that way.

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

You know the reason why they do that, though, Ethan? No, I don't. Goaltenders. Goaltenders. That's why. Goaltenders, if they're the last to touch the puck, and all of a sudden there's an own goal that happens, the goaltender is credited with the goal. You know, the opposing goaltender.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

I don't need another anti-goal stat attached to my goaltending stats. I don't need own goals attached to my goals against average. Enough of you and your goalie fraternity.

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

No, no, no. We're talking about goaltenders scoring goals, actually. Not own goals, but actual goals credited to them. Because if they made the save, and all of a sudden there's an own goal on every net.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

Yeah, like the first ever goal credited to a goaltender, Billy Smith.

Chapter 4: Who should win the Selke Trophy in the NHL?

04:40 - 04:43 David Samson

Our kids, Tyler and Claire, learning to skate that they need to keep their balance on each other?

0

04:43 - 04:44 Roy

That's why you need a sled.

0

04:44 - 04:51 David Samson

These are NHL players. They don't need sleds. These are the best players and staters in the world. I'm sorry, but I don't buy that.

0

04:51 - 05:15 Roy

That play was off a face-off, by the way. That's why he complained about it. I was trying to keep my balance there. Or just fall on your ass and maybe paralyze the guy. Right. I don't know. So he's appealing the suspension. If Bettman says no, because this is... Six games or more, he's going to have to go to an independent arbitrator. And then who knows what's going to happen from there.

0

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

But he deserves his suspension. Yeah, that's not cool. And I'm telling you right now, following this, if he does anything as heinous as that... I mean, he might as well go the Tony D'Angelo route and go to Russia.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

Yeah. Well, the lead's not going to keep putting guys in if they continue to repeat offend and to put other players' safety at hazard. Like, you just got to protect everybody else.

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

Yeah.

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

Ethan, you got anything? Can you share awards in the NHL?

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

Can you share awards? Like a co-MVP? The Jennings selfie goes to two goaltenders.

Chapter 5: What is the significance of Porter Martone's focus on hockey?

06:25 - 06:43 Ethan Podolsky

Definitely, but he only missed really like a week or two at the beginning of the season. I just think the work that Reinhardt does defensively goes so far under the radar because he plays next to the guy that everybody agrees is the best defensive forward in the league right now. And now that Patrice Bergeron is out of the league, Barkov can finally start winning the Selkie every year.

0

06:44 - 06:47 Ethan Podolsky

But I just think my hot take would be both those guys give it to him.

0

06:47 - 06:52 Roy

Under zero circumstance were those two canceling each other out. That's ball calls.

0

06:52 - 07:02 David Samson

It's one or the other. But I've actually put a lot of thought into this in recent weeks. And I've been kind of on Team Reinhardt since last year just as somebody coming up. He's going to score 15.

0

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

The conclusion I came to is that Barkov, what he does defensively, and I don't mean broadly and statistically, I mean the plays he makes with his stick, the way that he separates guys from the puck, the way that he accelerates and completely ends plays out of nowhere. I don't see anybody doing those specific things.

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

The play he made on the game-winning goal last night where he's just got a guy up against the boards and just shoves him off and gets the puck right into the middle for Reinhardt to set up.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

No disrespect to Sam Reinhardt and what he's doing, and he's an amazing defensive player, but I think Sasha Barkov is on another level. where I'm at. Wins of the week. David? My win of the week, Porter Martone. Prospect. Prospect for the NHL. He's playing in the OHL right now for the Brampton Steelheads. He did a Q&A recently with Bardown, and they asked him like 100 questions, or whatever it was.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

94 questions, says he wears number 94. But so many of the non-hockey related answers were hockey related. Like, what kind of toothpaste do you use? Oh, I don't know. Whatever would keep my teeth in because I play hockey. Ah! you know, what kind of shows do you watch? Well, you know, whatever, you know, NHL tonight. Yeah, like every single thing was hockey related. I'm so here for it.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

This kid is, what is he, like 17 years old? He hasn't even gotten to the NHL yet.

Chapter 6: How did the Florida Panthers' players perform in recent games?

08:13 - 08:17 Roy

He's got the cliches down already as a prospect. He's so hyper-focused and ready to go. It's like they teach a class

0

08:18 - 08:34 David Samson

It's Bull Durham all over again. It's Crash Davis, but maybe it's a goalie instead of a catcher. But Porter Martone, I can't wait for him to get to the NHL. He's such a hyper-focused hockey guy. It kind of makes me think of Matthew Kachuk and somebody that just eats and breathes and sleeps hockey 24-7. So I just thought that was cool. That's my win of the week.

0

08:34 - 08:49 Ethan Podolsky

Give me more hockey, guys. Ethan. Porter Martone is 18 years old. My win of the week goes to Sam Bennett. This was awesome last night. I was absolutely jacked up. He finally got someone to fight him. Sam Bennett, for those who don't know, delivered a big hit to Jake Neighbors the last time the Panthers played. It was close to being a hit to the head.

0

08:50 - 09:07 Ethan Podolsky

And I guess the Blues decided we were going to send Jake Neighbors after him. And these two went at it off the opening draw right away. Put both of them in the center circle. And look at Bennett. Just whooped his ass. Bennett also almost got credited with the goal. Mackie Samosevich ended up getting the credit for that goal, but did have an assist.

0

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

So he came up a goal shy of a Gordie Howe hat trick. And that fight was awesome. I think we should pay a pet adoption fee just based off that fight. You know how Bennett is paying a pet adoption fee?

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

Yes, I know that. But still, you want us to pay it?

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

That should count.

00:00 - 00:00 David Samson

That should count. I kind of agree with that because it's so rare when a guy will actually agree to drop the gloves with Sam Bennett. It's not like he doesn't want to fight. The guy wins every fight he's in. He is a menace. I would never want to face him. So anytime somebody's got the balls to drop the gloves with Sam Bennett, I think there should be some kind of reward.

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

Hats off to both Jake Navers and Sam Bennett. That was a great fight.

Chapter 7: What are the predictions for the Four Nations Faceoff?

14:55 - 15:03 Roy

And again, as long as it's not Sidney Crosby related. I ask that you please benefit us. Bless us.

0

15:03 - 15:07 Ethan Podolsky

We got a minute left, boys, in this segment. Who do you guys have in Four Nations? Oh, boy.

0

15:07 - 15:13 Roy

All eight of them. I'll take the Panthers. All eight Panthers. I'm cheering for everyone who's Panthers.

0

15:14 - 15:14 David Samson

Yeah, I really...

0

00:00 - 00:00 Ethan Podolsky

really don't know like who in terms of a favorite like it's hard not to go to Team Finland Team Finland to me is like Team Japan in baseball tournaments where there might not be the most talented but they're so fundamentally sound and they're gonna play such good hockey and they're gonna have such a cohesive unit I find it hard not to believe that Finland could easily end up in the final of this tournament

00:00 - 00:00 Roy

We have Bill Lindsey coming up. If you want to watch that, you can watch that on YouTube if you're watching on DKN. So Billy Lindsey is going to join us in a second.
