Chapter 1: Who are the hosts discussing the NBA Draft Lottery fallout?

7.648 - 40.731 Andrew Schlecht

Welcome to another edition of the Morning Shootaround here on the Athletic NBA Daily YouTube feed. We go live every Wednesday, mid-morning, just to chat with you guys about the NBA and the goings-on and just a nice little platform for us to talk a little bit deeper, maybe get some points out that we don't have time to, typically, on the regular show. Athletic NBA Daily. I'm Andrew Schlecht.

0

40.791 - 50.063 Andrew Schlecht

With me, Dave DeFore, Esper Haney. We are going to talk about the fallout. from the draft lottery.

0

50.423 - 50.864 Es Baraheni

Gross.

0

51.184 - 57.549 Andrew Schlecht

And what it means for these particular teams. We can start with the Raptors if you want. No!

0

57.569 - 59.13 Es Baraheni

God, no.

59.43 - 62.092 Andrew Schlecht

Let you get it off your chest. You want to wait?

62.112 - 68.077 Es Baraheni

Yeah. They're like the sixth most, seventh most interest. I don't even know.

Chapter 2: What were the surprising outcomes of the NBA Draft Lottery?

68.097 - 77.603 Dave DuFour

Oh, keep going. Keep going. Yeah, yeah. Keep going. They're like... 28th, 29th most interesting, if we're being honest. Come on.

0

77.903 - 100.821 Es Baraheni

Yeah. No, I mean, lottery-wise, I don't think they're – I mean, seven and nine is not that big of a difference to me. Yeah. It would have been nice to jump to one or two. Yeah. And I know there was that whole thing yesterday where – There were a bunch of reports coming out where it was like, oh, if it was this combination and they were one number off or one number this way and whatnot.

0

100.861 - 117.351 Es Baraheni

The Bulls were close to winning the lottery. The Spurs had the best odds at one point to win the entire thing and get number one overall, which would have just been terrible. This is why I don't gamble. Yeah. Would the Spurs have been worse than the Mavericks for you guys?

0

118.479 - 121.241 Andrew Schlecht

Yes, absolutely. Wow. Absolutely. I don't know.

0

121.621 - 145.615 Dave DuFour

I don't know. I think it's kind of interesting, right? It turns into a 2K franchise then, right? Where you trade, you know, you tank or you don't even tank. You just trade away players and you get draft picks and you wind up with all the top picks. Yeah. That's kind of cool. The De'Aaron Fox thing is kind of in the way there. Yeah. Where it's a fully... be what it could be, but I don't know.

145.916 - 150.318 Dave DuFour

I think the Dallas thing is the funniest thing that could have happened by far.

150.718 - 158.022 Andrew Schlecht

It's the funniest. It's also the one where the conspiracy theories around it make more sense than the reality.

158.042 - 158.983 Unidentified Speaker 4

Yeah.

160.228 - 167.492 Andrew Schlecht

The NBA has found themselves in a tricky spot because there's so many conspiracy theories that have existed throughout the NBA for years and years and years.

Chapter 3: Are NBA Draft Lottery conspiracy theories justified?

185.117 - 186.819 Es Baraheni

Kyrie Irving. We got you.

0

187.46 - 199.394 Andrew Schlecht

We got the New Orleans Pelicans. Oh, man. Sorry about that. You guys going to L.A.? We got something for you. Oh, Mavericks, you know what? We really need a boost in the ratings.

0

199.615 - 200.396 Es Baraheni

Yeah, there you go.

0

200.953 - 206.777 Andrew Schlecht

What would help most is to get a star in L.A. You know what? Don't worry. We got your back.

0

208.919 - 212.602 Es Baraheni

Bring a Cooper flag. You could really sell yourself on this, by the way.

212.622 - 220.848 Dave DuFour

This is not conspiracy theories. They do. Exactly. It's so close. You can fake anything you want. Exactly.

220.928 - 231.56 Andrew Schlecht

It makes way more sense than the reality that... Well, that team that had 1% chance to actually win it, that... Oh, come on.

231.72 - 233.202 Dave DuFour

Well, 1% is a million.

233.342 - 259.544 Es Baraheni

I mean, it's... it's a huge chance there was what 1001 different combinations that could have happened yeah and that was the comp it's people do bring up the basketball gods in this situation and we we talked about it on the pod it's like they work they work in mysterious ways this was some sort of weird no one's working in a mysterious way people are pulling strings come on basketball i do i

Chapter 4: How could the NBA Draft Lottery system be improved or rigged?

389.126 - 389.866 Es Baraheni

That makes sense.

0

390.027 - 394.59 Andrew Schlecht

I could totally see that. I love that. It makes me like DECA more. I like that.

0

395.171 - 405.16 Es Baraheni

Yeah, you get up in a little suit and tie and you're like, well, this presentation. NBA teams should do that for the lottery. Can I expound on that?

0

405.18 - 416.031 Dave DuFour

Yes, go for it. I've thought about this a lot. What you could do is a salary scale instead of a draft lottery. Worst record, you get to offer the most money in a rookie contract.

0

416.551 - 436.012 Dave DuFour

and then the players is that enough of an incentive though well depends if you're if you're cooper flag and you know uh the wizards come and they say hey we can give you 30 million dollars a year four-year contract it's guaranteed as a rookie not bad or you're playing for the minimum or whatever it is.

436.032 - 438.615 Andrew Schlecht

Yeah, the minimum for the Lakers.

439.135 - 448.604 Dave DuFour

But it is a free market. Because endorsements. Now, the problem is it's not meant to distribute talent. It's not meant to. Because the best organizations are going to figure out.

448.744 - 459.852 Andrew Schlecht

That's the problem. That's the problem I have with all of this. Like, hey, we need to change it. I mean, here's the deal. No matter what happens, people are going to want to change it. There's no perfect system.

460.673 - 466.655 Dave DuFour

They voted 29-1 for the current odds and they really hate it. The one team, though.

Chapter 5: What impact do draft picks have on NBA team success?

688.705 - 691.867 Es Baraheni

Kyrie is probably 2011, right?

0

691.887 - 693.489 Andrew Schlecht

He doesn't win it if LeBron doesn't go back.

0

694.089 - 713.462 Dave DuFour

It's a different world, though. The talent curve is so different now than it was in the 90s. I mean, even the early 2000s. Just players are so much better, right? So the bottom of the draft has come up closer to the top of the draft. That's another thing that's at play here, right? Part of why we have so much parity in the NBA is that

0

713.962 - 735.753 Dave DuFour

There's I mean, there's so many good role players like Aaron Neesmith, right? Like this guy, he gets drafted by Danny Ainge just because of his body. Yep. And he turns himself into this kind of player. So it's just I don't know. I do think it's tough because these small markets cannot compete. They just can't like no one's signing in Charlotte ever.

0

736.253 - 748.24 Es Baraheni

Yeah, that's they just have to draft better, man. They just have to hope that like, I don't know, Derek Queen or Trey Johnson or whoever they end up picking at five, six, seven is better than Dylan Harper or.

748.32 - 758.528 Dave DuFour

I actually think, you know what? The teams that get out of that, you know what? They're the best at is pro personnel scouting. They're the ones that – like Ty Jerome, you know what I mean? They find those guys.

759.008 - 759.289 Andrew Schlecht

Yeah.

759.489 - 761.971 Dave DuFour

Oh, okay, this guy just needs more of an opportunity.

762.051 - 765.715 Andrew Schlecht

Not a great time to bring Ty Jerome, by the way. Yeah, not the best time.

Chapter 6: How important are player measurements and analytics in the draft?

852.72 - 858.203 Es Baraheni

It's true. Yeah. I mean, look, Lamello and Brandon Miller. It's like it's cool, but they have not nailed it.

0

858.903 - 859.424 Dave DuFour

Is it cool?

0

860.244 - 860.845 Es Baraheni

I think it is.

0

861.225 - 862.826 Andrew Schlecht

I still think it's cool.

0

864.027 - 865.168 Dave DuFour

Who's he going to get it for?

866.349 - 867.51 Andrew Schlecht

Who do you like it for for them?

868.298 - 874.181 Es Baraheni

I haven't done any drafts. I think for them, it's like you pray that Vijay Edgecombe is there.

874.201 - 878.223 Andrew Schlecht

That would be so good for them. What does he do?

878.743 - 891.45 Es Baraheni

He's a two-way defensive monster, crazy athlete. Not a crazy guy who can create for you offensively, but that's Lomelo and Brandon Miller's job anyways. He can take advantage of the...

Chapter 7: What are potential trade scenarios involving Anthony Davis and the Mavericks?

1092.101 - 1092.542 Unidentified Speaker 5

6'6 wingspan.

0

1098.871 - 1099.731 Es Baraheni

Can he shoot it enough?

0

1100.372 - 1101.232 Andrew Schlecht

He's a really good shooter.

0

1101.412 - 1102.272 Es Baraheni

Yeah, absolutely.

0

1102.492 - 1102.972 Andrew Schlecht

On the move?

1103.513 - 1110.315 Es Baraheni

Yeah, he's either the best or second best shooter. I think I saw one game this year. Yeah, I like him.

1110.535 - 1111.495 Andrew Schlecht

I think he can really play.

1112.236 - 1115.977 Es Baraheni

He would have been a great pick for OKC if they had kept that pick. That would have been...

1116.502 - 1126.064 Andrew Schlecht

Yeah. That would have made a lot of sense. Yeah. Now that he's only measuring at 6'5", there's numbers like 6'7".

Chapter 8: What is the outlook for NBA small market teams and rebuilding strategies?

1335.721 - 1364.104 Andrew Schlecht

Because I do like the fit with him and Lively, with Coop and Lively. I love that. Especially if Lively can shoot. Yeah, go get somebody that can create. Man, imagine if they had an offensive hub. They're not going to do it. They're absolutely not going to do it. But you know what? He should. Yeah. He should absolutely trade Anthony Davis today. But defense wins championships, man.

0

1364.424 - 1367.048 Andrew Schlecht

He's not going to do that.

0

1367.89 - 1375.841 Dave DuFour

The thing is, they're not going to be as good because Kyrie's going to be out. Who are they going to get to play guard?

0

1376.021 - 1387.109 Es Baraheni

That's what I'm saying. They should make a – like they should – I would say – I would call Rob Palenka and be like, hey, Derek Lively for Austin Reeves. There you go.

0

1387.169 - 1393.675 Dave DuFour

Or Daniel Gafford for Austin. You know what? That's not enough. For Austin Lakers.

1393.915 - 1395.596 Andrew Schlecht

For Austin Reeves. Oh, absolutely not.

1395.976 - 1422.941 Dave DuFour

Yeah. It's got to be more than that. I don't think Dallas has the juice, really. Like, lively, maybe. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Lively for Austin. But I'm not giving up lively. But Nico might. I don't know. You never know. It's a weird situation. But I do think, like... The smart move would be move – it's similar to what you've got like Boston has a similar kind of situation, right?

1422.961 - 1445.167 Dave DuFour

Like Kyrie's going to be out next season, most of the year, and what's he going to look like right when he comes back? Probably not great if we're judging on history. Yep. Okay, so next year is probably – if it's not a lost season, you're in the play-in. in the West at best. They were on the play-in this year. That's what I mean, right? So you're right back where you were.

1445.207 - 1470.938 Dave DuFour

So does that make any sense? Anthony Davis is 31. He'll be 30 next year. He's age 32 season. So by the time you're even thinking about actually being competitive, it's a whole other calendar year. He's 33. You're about to sign him to another max because that's just how the NBA works. And your competitive window is already closed. Yeah. Because Kyrie's going to be 36 when he comes back, 35.
