Finally, in our last story, a kiss from beyond. So, wanna hear something scary? Nemesis Love. It's said that love can change you, but sometimes it reshapes you into something unrecognizably horrible. Like in this story, written by one of our featured writers in honor of Black History Month, Marissa Dowell. Sid straightened his shirt and adjusted his watch as he got comfortable in his seat.
Chapter 4: How does Sid's dream girl manipulate him?
Even though the booth he was sitting in was covered in plush pink and red velvet, he couldn't help feeling caged in. But he reminded himself that he willingly signed up to be a contestant on the Love Bubble, the experiment for good people dying to find love. He was ready for the hour of speed dating in this tiny room separated into two booths by a one-way mirror.
Chapter 5: What dark transformation does Sid undergo?
As they began, a woman started speaking in his ear. She was the matchmaker. The matchmaker was the one running the show. Sid was a handsome man with a good head of hair and sparkly eyes. He wore that expensive watch to show women his worth. He hadn't been ready for a relationship before. He'd admitted to the matchmaker over the phone.
Chapter 6: What warning does the episode give about love?
He'd blown many women off, maybe one too many, maybe far too cruel at times, but now he was ready for his dream girl. And remind me, Sid, who is your dream girl? The matchmaker asked now, through an earpiece. Sid answered without hesitation. She's beautiful and warm, like a ray of sunshine. Understanding and a good listener. Someone who will take care of me until I'm old and gray.
Chapter 7: What unsettling tale is told about Imelda?
So basically, everything I'm not, he joked. Except the beautiful part, the matchmaker joked back. She advised him to stay true to himself, answer the questions honestly, and he'd leave today a changed man. On cue, his first match entered the other side of the booth. Sid's date couldn't see the enchanting smile he was flashing. Eventually, Sid heard an impatient, Hello? He felt foolish.
He introduced himself and told the person he'd hoped was his dream girl about his high-paying job and well-off family. But his date wanted to talk about something else. What keeps you up at night, Sid? The words felt flirty and a little dangerous. Sid liked it. He answered honestly, ending up in a big house with everything he wanted but no one to share it with.
But why would that happen to a nice guy like you? Sid tiptoed around the fact that maybe he hadn't always been the nicest. His date hummed, marinating over Sid's omission. He waited for a reaction. The one he got surprised him. His date empathized, telling Sid his behavior was understandable, considering there are a lot of nightmares out there. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had?
Sid was now taken aback. He described an old witch with scraggly hair and spindly fingers, tickling him in bed. He laughed that it was inspired by a bad date. But the contestant in the other booth wasn't laughing. Their voice grew deeper, more demanding when they instructed Sid to be silent. He complied out of shock. Then his date told Sid to grab a chunk of his precious shiny hair.
Sid started to do it, but hesitated until his date commanded, "'Now!' For some reason, he couldn't help but obey. He wanted to stop, but the voice was too delicious to ignore. He could feel his date's power pulsing through the walls. He felt the weight of the control and an insane desire to please involuntary filled his pores." Now pull. Sid's eyes started to water.
He didn't want to, but he had to. He yanked his hair, but that wasn't good enough. He was met with demands to go harder, harder now, until a tuft of perfectly shampooed locks were sitting in his palm. He touched the raw spot on his scalp, where blood pooled. The person on the other side of the booth laughed. Sid questioned why she made him do that, and said he wanted to leave.
His supposed dream girl told him he wasn't allowed to leave yet, not when they were so close to falling in love. The voice compelled Sid to go to the desk in the corner of the room where a pen and paper were laid out. Then they told Sid to rip the pen open. When he didn't know how, they growled for him to bite it. Quickly, Sid listened, gnarling the pen in two with his perfectly white teeth.
They were marred with black ink as he cracked the pen open. But what was coming next was worse. Drop the blackness in your eyes. Sid begged for mercy through shaky breaths, but none came. He whimpered out a weak, why? And was met with a chilling response. Because I want your eyes to be black to match your soul. Sid tried to restrain his right hand with his left, but it was no use.
He poured the black into each of his oceanic eyes, screaming as the dye transformed his world into darkness. His dream girl was pleased, but had one more thing in mind. Sid begged for release. Instead, he was commanded to take off his watch and pop out the shiny gold links that made up the band. Ruining his prized possession was almost the worst part of all of this. But Sid did it, one by one.
