Half of the country's new HIV cases each year occur in the South. To combat the epidemic, the federal government funds groups that offer testing and support, like food assistance, to communities at risk of the disease. But as HIV prevention funds are cut and delayed, these organizations are scaling back their work. Daphina Ward is the executive director of the Southern AIDS Coalition.

If the cuts stick, Ward says many people won't learn they're infected, won't be treated, and may spread HIV to others.
U.S. futures are flat in after-hours trading on Wall Street. This is NPR. A detained University of Alabama student has decided to self-deport to his native country, Iran. His attorney says Alireza Daruti is no longer facing the charge that precipitated his arrest, but did not want to spend any more time in jail fighting his deportation on a second charge.
Daruti's visa was revoked in June 2023, but the reason is unclear. A jury in Manhattan has heard from the second of three women expected to make accusations against Harvey Weinstein. Ilya Maris has more on the former film producer's retrial.
Kaya Sokola told the court that in 2002 she was a 16-year-old model visiting the United States for the first time. She said it was during that trip that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan apartment. When she resisted, he told her she needed to work on her stubbornness.
She said Weinstein assaulted her a second time, almost four years later, in a hotel room, saying afterwards, you see, that wasn't so difficult. Sokola was not a witness at Weinstein's 2020 New York trial. His conviction was overturned by an appeals court on procedural grounds last year. Weinstein maintains his innocence.
