Chapter 1: Who was elected as the new Pope and what does it mean for the faithful?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. Cheers among the thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square Thursday as white folk build from the chimney at the Sistine Chapel. After a second day of voting, the 133 cardinal electors chose American missionary Robert Prevost to succeed Pope Francis. As heard here through an interpreter, Prevost called upon the faithful to unite.
Help us. and all others to build bridges with dialogue, with meeting, to be one common people, living always in peace. Thank you to Pope Francis.
Chapter 2: What is the significance of Pope Leo XIV's election?
Prevost has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV. In Washington, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has unveiled a sweeping plan to modernize U.S. air traffic control, including a revamped flight management system. Details from NPR's Scott Newman.
Chapter 3: What are the details of the U.S. air traffic control modernization plan?
At a news conference with airline CEOs and the heads of the FAA and NTSB, Duffy cited January's deadly midair collision in D.C. and recent problems at Newark Airport as urgent reasons for action. He said President Trump is committed to solving the problem once and for all.
He doesn't want to take this problem and pass it to the next administration, to the next secretary.
to a next set of victims. He didn't give a price tag, but said with full funding from Congress, the overhaul could be done in three to four years. Scott Newman, NPR News, Washington.
Chapter 4: Why did President Trump fire the Librarian of Congress?
President Trump has fired Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden, according to an email obtained by the Associated Press and NPR. Hayden's 10-year term in the post was set to expire next year. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffrey says Hayden is accomplished, principled, and distinguished, and calls her dismissal the latest effort to ban books.
Chapter 5: How are funding cuts impacting HIV-AIDS outreach in the Deep South?
Organizations providing HIV-AIDS outreach and care in the Deep South are feeling the shock of funding cuts to health agencies. From our partner KFF Health News, Amy Maxman has more.
Half of the country's new HIV cases each year occur in the South. To combat the epidemic, the federal government funds groups that offer testing and support, like food assistance, to communities at risk of the disease. But as HIV prevention funds are cut and delayed, these organizations are scaling back their work. Daphina Ward is the executive director of the Southern AIDS Coalition.
Prevention. We're seeing this about phase of what it means to truly work towards ending HIV and in this country.
If the cuts stick, Ward says many people won't learn they're infected, won't be treated, and may spread HIV to others.
U.S. futures are flat in after-hours trading on Wall Street. This is NPR. A detained University of Alabama student has decided to self-deport to his native country, Iran. His attorney says Alireza Daruti is no longer facing the charge that precipitated his arrest, but did not want to spend any more time in jail fighting his deportation on a second charge.
Daruti's visa was revoked in June 2023, but the reason is unclear. A jury in Manhattan has heard from the second of three women expected to make accusations against Harvey Weinstein. Ilya Maris has more on the former film producer's retrial.
Kaya Sokola told the court that in 2002 she was a 16-year-old model visiting the United States for the first time. She said it was during that trip that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan apartment. When she resisted, he told her she needed to work on her stubbornness.
She said Weinstein assaulted her a second time, almost four years later, in a hotel room, saying afterwards, you see, that wasn't so difficult. Sokola was not a witness at Weinstein's 2020 New York trial. His conviction was overturned by an appeals court on procedural grounds last year. Weinstein maintains his innocence. For NPR News, I'm Ilya Maritz in New York.
For the second year in a row, singer-songwriter Laini Wilson has been named Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The 60th annual ACM Awards was once again hosted by country music legend Reba McEntire, with performances by Jelly Roll, Shaboosie, and others. Again, U.S. futures are flat, and after-hours trading on Asia-Pacific market shares are mixed. This is NPR News.
