Chapter 1: Who is Stephanie Gottlieb and what is her jewelry background?

0.149 - 37.305 Kim

Welcome back to another episode of Excuse My Grandma. It's Kim and my co-host, Grandma Gail. And this week, we are joined by a very special guest, Stephanie Gottlieb. If you aren't familiar, she's a New York City-based jewelry designer. She started her business in 2013. I want to hear all about that. And has a lot of Instagram followers as well.

37.466 - 45.369 Kim

I was just showing Grandma some of her beautiful posts. And yeah, we're so excited to have her today. So thanks, Stephanie. Thank you for having me. I'm excited to be here.

0

45.959 - 48.021 Grandma Gail

I'm excited because I love everything she has.

0

48.261 - 57.507 Kim

Yes. We love talking jewelry. But first, let's get a little bit about you, where you're living, your relationship status, all that.

57.627 - 77.018 Stephanie Gottlieb

Sure. So I started my business in 2013. It was my first job right out of – well, my first job right out of college was in the Diamond District. That was my intro. Oh, wow. to this world. And it was actually an internship that was meant to be just for the summer. I was applying to all of these glamorous jobs at magazines that I thought I wanted to have.

77.839 - 95.411 Stephanie Gottlieb

And after two months of working with diamonds every day and learning about this industry, I was totally hooked. And I ended up staying with that company for five years. So during that time, I kind of Took everything in, learned the ins and outs of the wholesale part of the diamond industry.

95.611 - 115.874 Stephanie Gottlieb

And then after that time, felt like there was just more opportunity to be in front of a customer that felt more familiar to me and to be designing for the woman that I really was. So I left in 2013 and started my business. And at that time, it was word of mouth, friends and friends of friends.

116.074 - 138.655 Stephanie Gottlieb

And this was all happening at the same time that Instagram became a platform that businesses were starting to use. And, you know, it became this portfolio of images of all the things I was working on and the fun projects I had completed. And slowly, slowly, that word of mouth disappeared. you know, turned into something much bigger. Where do you manufacture, Stephanie?

139.095 - 160.279 Stephanie Gottlieb

So we, I have kept a lot of my manufacturing on 47th Street since that really is my background. And because it's so high touch, I'm able to really communicate close and work closely with my jewelers there. Right. But a lot of our pieces are also made overseas, just nature of the beast. Right. Whether they're from Italy or from Italy and Thailand.

Chapter 2: How have jewelry trends evolved over the years?

2063.283 - 2067.887 Grandma Gail

I love it. Sweet. It's called sweet. Yeah. It used to be called sweets. I don't know. Stephanie knows.

0

2067.907 - 2073.891 Stephanie Gottlieb

Yeah. I'm, I am all about it. Like I said, I'm matchy matchy. So I, I love it. I think it's fun.

0

2074.091 - 2076.313 Grandma Gail

My grandmother used to like that. How to be a sweet.

0

2076.953 - 2090.849 Kim

That's so interesting. I don't think I've seen that or have anything that matches. No. Well, you'd have to have earrings. Oh, actually, like vanquish. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Like if you wear clover earrings with a clover. Yeah, exactly. I guess I do that. Mm-hmm. Whoever's sweet. So let's bring it back.

0

2090.869 - 2106.951 Grandma Gail

Yes. Some of them are beautiful. They are truly beautiful. And again, you have to have a place to go in them. So if they're toned down and not the grand ones, then they absolutely could be worn with a shirt, a sweater, a little cotton dress.

2108.038 - 2111.52 Kim

Okay. Last one, which like they kind of are back in a way, but pearls.

2112.4 - 2135.75 Stephanie Gottlieb

I love pearls. I think they're great. We are introducing more pearls into the collection because I just, I think they, they have a place in fashion jewelry. I think it's, you know, when you have, it's not something I would purchase first if I were starting to build my collection. But once you have the basics of your diamond tennis necklace and studs, I think pearls are a fun place to go to.

2136.01 - 2141.716 Kim

And how do you envision wearing them? Like, is it like chunkier? Is it a few strands?

2142.137 - 2167.477 Stephanie Gottlieb

So I love like a pearl drop earring, I think is really fun. For me, pearls feel very vacation focused. So, you know, white t-shirt and a a pearl drop earring or a pearl that's got a big chunky gold pendant on it. There are definitely ways to make it feel younger. I have my mom's pearls that I wear, you know, in ways that she would never, but it makes them feel like they belong in my wardrobe.
