631. Will "3 Summers of Lincoln" Make It to Broadway?
It could be something like, does he envision his life in Springfield? Like in what's there in Springfield? Yeah. Like old dusty roads and grief.

631. Will "3 Summers of Lincoln" Make It to Broadway?
The first preview in La Jolla, I will be as nervous as I am in a Broadway opening because this is the first time the show will meet an audience. Hopefully we got a lot of it right, but there'll be surprises. There'll be things the audience doesn't understand. There'll be things they don't react to. There'll be jokes that I think are hilarious that the audience does not understand.

I want people who sort of come in with their arms folded saying, a Lincoln musical, prove it to me. And to leave saying, wow, that was a thrilling story, thrillingly told. And it's made me think about the state of our country. The anger and the turbulence we feel in this country is nothing new.

We've had periods where it's been maybe muted a bit, and we're in a very loud period of turbulence right now, but it's nothing new. And I think like both Lincoln and Douglas, you have to fight for the good. You can't just push your ideas through either.

You have to actually make people understand why you're doing what you're doing and why the way you think things should be is the way that they should be.

I just felt the narrative at the beginning wasn't as sharp as the rest of the show. That's DiPietro. The challenge in a musical like this is you're telling an epic story. I mean, how many different versions of the Civil War could you write? There needs to be a spine to it. How can we have the spine as clear as quickly as possible?

We felt, for instance, that the character of Mary Lincoln, she wasn't in the score as much, especially given the actress who is going to play that role.

It's a gift. It's a precious gift from God. And I use it for him and for people.

Right around eighth, ninth grade. So I grew up in the church. I was in the choir, but I was in the back. I could not sing. They would never give me a solo, ever.

Listen, this is the truth. I wanted so desperately to sing. So I just started mimicking. I taught myself through copying some of my favorite artists of the time. John P. Key, who was a gospel singer, amazing legend. Jodeci, which was my favorite group back then, R&B group, and Stevie Wonder.

629. How Is Live Theater Still Alive?
I listened to every track they've ever made on repeat, and I taught myself to sing through just copying those wonderful, wonderful artists. And I started singing publicly after that.

I was making noise. I was making a lot of noise. That's all.
