Most of the time it was... Our family called her that.
They come driving in, social workers, and they got out of the car.
And I told my brothers and sisters, I said, go hide.
This was just part of every Native family's history.
I remember when I was young, we'd go to one of the border towns, and my grandma would say, stay in the car, lock yourself in, don't get out of the car, I'm going into the trading post, because they're going to steal you.
The board of directors, council of elders.
Well, I mean, it's hard for us to say that because, you know, that's not what motivated us.
How we feel, we just feel that in this case, it was a beautiful law that was put into place to prevent the breakup of families, Indian families.
And I just think it wasn't really supposed to be applied to a situation like ours.
I don't think that was the intent of the law ever.
We've kind of been in a holding pattern for, like, well, forever.
