It's a chemical production that happens within the plant and its purpose is to attract pollinators, which in this case are flies and carrion beetles, anything that's attracted to a rotting animal in the jungle. It's a smell that really penetrates through the jungle, so it's a fantastic adaptation to life in the jungle of Sumatra.
