But the reason why this ultimately is not good for the Merovingian dynasty is that basically it's too large, it turns out, for Clothar II and his son and heir, Daggerbert, to rule. So what Clothar ends up having to do is to essentially send his sons out to rule as kind of sub-kings. So one goes off to Aquitaine. He's absolutely useless.
