The existence of midnight sun would, if not outright prove, at least heavily suggest, the Earth is a tilted sphere. The other benefit of going to Antarctica is that it would hopefully demonstrate that the Earth is not, in fact, entirely surrounded by an ice wall which separates the Earth from the rest of the universe. This was the proposal that Duffy came up with.
