Or at least my understanding of why you admire him is he's a figure from an age where we expected intellectuals to provoke and to throw punches. Where the idea was not that we consume the work of people whose opinions we entirely agree with. That we want to be challenged, even by people who we think of as occasionally or often on our side. We want... to think as a kind of conflict.
