We are constantly pivoting to see what customers really need and how we can generate an impact. But what we are doing today in the topic of innovation is always trying to get ahead of that. We ask our clients what is the most important thing for them, what is it that really does not let them sleep. There are clients who ask us many times, hey, what is done within IBM? What are you thinking about?

IBM is a company that has a wide range of products and services. Today, our focus has to do with artificial intelligence, which is the world of data, the world of process automation. Everything that is to apply that artificial intelligence, that technology, so that companies and customers are increasingly efficient in what they do.

Well, I'll start with the first one, the hybrid cloud issue. When we started talking about this a few years ago, it sounded weird. It was like a hybrid cloud. It's either a cloud or it's not a cloud. How can it be a hybrid? And the truth is that all this had a story. You have clients in which a very strong investment had already been made in everything that was infrastructure.
All their core systems, all their important systems that allow them to operate, worked on products that they could touch and that were in their own data centers. how it was that you were going to go totally to the cloud, you were going to go to that extreme.
We started working with those clients to tell them that the intermediate path was possible, that you could move towards the cloud and that you could perfectly use all the investments you had made and keep yourself in a hybrid world that basically has your private clouds, public clouds and also what you have as infrastructure already purchased in your company.
That process in Mexico is a process that is quite advanced. I would tell you that all corporate clients today, medium-sized companies upwards, have seven or eight clouds that they use at the same time, every day. Users do not even know that they are using it. It can be very simple applications such as productivity tools or it can be the use, for example, of the banking core.
And you don't even know exactly how you can see all of that in a single interface. But what's behind it is extremely complex. How to manage that complexity? We dedicate ourselves to that. And for that, a few years ago, we bought Red Hat, a very respected company. It was very big at that time in the world. I bought IBM for $36 billion.
Everyone said, but how do you make such a big investment in a company that is said to be open source? It was like, it can't be, what are you doing? But Red Hat and its OpenShift platform, today it is the base, it is the gold standard in the market for everything that has to do with Uber.
So we are very proud of that and we have been a fundamental part of that development process in Mexico and other countries in the world.
And going back to the question you asked about artificial intelligence, how are companies taking it?
Well, artificial intelligence, the first part of all this, which has been around for several years, more than a decade, I would tell you that an important percentage of Mexican medium-sized companies have already done something with artificial intelligence. Around 70% have touched something that has to do with artificial intelligence. The big question is...

Y en el caso de IA en particular, ¿cómo funciona con sus principales clientes? ¿Ustedes van y les proponen o el cliente les pide?
¿Cómo es esto? Tenemos una mezcla. Nosotros tenemos algunos clientes en los cuales la relación es tan grande y de tantos años, a los cuales le proponemos lo que nos llamamos cliente cero. Le decimos, mira, ya IBM ha hecho en el mundo todas estas cosas con licencia artificial. Hemos logrado todos estos retornos. Ya lo hemos implementado y funciona. Exacto.
We also test them depending on the industry. For example, a Telco customer here in Mexico, we tell him, we are doing this in the United States, we are doing it in Europe. So we can show them how that did work in other clients who have gone that way.
Because it is very important, Javier, the issue of not getting into things in which you are going to vote money and you are going to realize three or four years later that it did not work. It is too expensive. Exactly. From the point of view of reputation, from the point of view of costs, you have been able to use that money in something else.
So, the truth is that customers today are questioning, hey, how do I get into projects of artificial intelligence that are tested? At the same time, in your own industry, you also want to have some innovation. If you want to take a little risk, but not as much as to be able to risk your reputation or to be able to risk a lot of money.
When I started working in technology, I remember, I don't know, about 17 years ago, that I read a lot about Job Party, Watson and IBM, which had been like an icon, a historical moment in culture. And from there, when I started going to CES and other fairs, there were a lot of these consumption prototypes based on Watson, what you could do with kitchen recipes.
I think they even got into the subject of making recipes, inventing things.

Chef Watson, and now that you mention the part of something, of creating something, how has the evolution of Watson been until it reached Watson X? What exactly is Watson X?
Well, the origin of all this was simply to use artificial intelligence, to use everything that was machine learning, and the first concepts were expensive, it was difficult, and only a few could afford to do that.
What has happened now is not only because you have access to technology in the cloud, in any of the providers, including, of course, IBM, which makes it really very cheap to make use of that technology.
What this whole issue of the generative artificial intelligence has again is precisely the use of models, the use of foundational models that allow you to build with a base that is relevant for your company, the whole world of information you need. And as information, today we have plenty of it, plenty outside and plenty inside the same company, how to put it into practice.
That's what we did with WatsonX. What we did was create a platform that has three parts. One part that is like a laboratory in which you can put your models to work, you can test them, everything that is machine learning, you can basically play with modeling all this. That's called WatsonX AI.
Then you have a part called WatsonX.data in which you build a data lake with all the data you have in your company and that you have outside and you give access to that data in an organized way, in a structured way, so that the model you created in AI can really take all that data and manage it properly.
And the last part that is very important today in this artificial intelligence world is the governance part. que es una parte que nosotros consideramos que es tan importante como las otras dos.

Mauricio, tell us, or tell the people who are listening to us, a company, how much percentage should it invest in cybersecurity currently?
Look, there is a difference by industry, but I would tell you that today, within what has to do with technology, at least 15 or 20% of its investment has to be related to cybersecurity issues. Cybersecurity is something that, as you know, is not a matter of if it is going to happen, it is when it is going to happen.
It's going to happen at some point in your story that you're going to get a cyber attack and you're going to be a victim of something big that's happening.
If you're not prepared to do that, it's going to be a real disaster that can throw you on the ground all the investment you've made in technology, the construction of reputation with your clients, that relationship that cost you so much to create. So I don't see a minimum, I don't see less than 20% of investment in your technology costs related to cybersecurity.
And AI is advancing a lot too. From the other side. Well, from the attackers.
Yes, from both sides. Without a doubt. You have the bad guys, let's say, the ones with a black hat, and the good guys. That's a career that is always very close. Every time that the companies that we dedicate ourselves to make solutions and products about this, If we take one more step, the Black Hats do something similar and manage to take an additional step.
So, the use of artificial intelligence is a must. You have to use it. If not, it's very easy for you to get the development that these companies, which today, as you know, are professionals. They get up every day, they get dressed, they go, they connect as it should, and they work their 14 or 15 hours a day dedicated to seeing how they do to break the main security cracks in the world.
