X-ray scans and artificial intelligence have been used to reveal the contents of an ancient, badly burnt scroll from the Roman town of Herculaneum. The document was charred by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago, meaning it would have been destroyed by any attempt to physically unroll it.
