There's a variety of systems that are attempting to do this. The most important is called the Content Authenticity Initiative. It's run by a standards organization. You've reported on this. It doesn't seem to be doing anything. We've talked about it a lot, but now, as you say, the cat's out of the bag, and the systems to verify whether images are real or fake are not ready.
